Student Program International Week Rotterdam 2016: European Powerhouse & Sustainable Port

Introduction Welcome to student program of the International Week Rotterdam 2016, organized by the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences! During the IWR2016, there will be multiple interesting guest lectures and exciting trips. You will also be working on a challenging assignment with your fellow Dutch and international students. The theme of this international week is European Powerhouse & Sustainable Port. These will be the main subjects during the program, which you will experience in many forms: from the activities you will undertake to the food that will be served. We hope you will be inspired and fully energized at the end of the week. This booklet provides you with all the necessary information about the IWR2016. If you have any questions that remain unanswered after reading the program, please send an email to IBK-BKM-student@hr.nl. On behalf of all our faculty staff and students, we hope you will take advantage of the many sights to see in our beautiful city, as well as to enjoy the many trips, presentations and lectures. Lucas Peters Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences 2

The addresses of these locations are listed below: Rotterdam University Museumpark 40 3015 CX ROTTERDAM Closest subway stop: Dijkzigt King Kong Hostel Witte de Withstraat 74 3012 BS ROTTERDAM Closest subway stop: Eendrachtsplein Walking Route You will find a dynamic Google Maps route between the King Kong Hostel and the Rotterdam University here: goo.gl/maps/tync4tpjyqt2. The entrance at Museumpark 40 (listed above) is the back entrance, but will lead you into the same building. 4

Meals and Other Consumptions During the international week, the Rotterdam University will provide several meals for both Dutch and international students. However, there are several occasions where the program does not include a meal. Please make sure to provide your own meals at this time. Dietary requests that were mentioned to us by participating students have been taken into account. The meals you will receive are as follows: Monday: You will receive a lunch box and the university hosts a small dinner. Tuesday: You will receive a lunch box. Wednesday: King s day: the university will not provide any meals on this day. Thursday: The Rotterdam University will not provide any meals on this day. Friday: The Rotterdam University hosts a lunch in the Markthal. Please make sure to arrange your own breakfast throughout the week. International students who stay in the hostel that was arranged by the Rotterdam University will not receive a breakfast at the hostel unless it has been booked separately ( 7,50 per day). You can pre-book the daily breakfast in the King Kong hostel by sending an email to IBK-BKM-student@hr.nl. Transportation Rotterdam University has arranged student transportation for the planned parts of the week program. Transport by coach (to the Port of Rotterdam and to the company visits) has therefore been paid for by the Rotterdam University. When we use public transportation, Dutch students travel for free with their OVjaarkaart. For international students, the Rotterdam University has arranged tickets for public transportation where necessary and if it is part of the week program. The detailed week program (part 3 of this document) clearly states when the university provides international students with tickets for public transportation. 5

Online Platform On the online platform for the international week (www.hr.nl/iwr2016), we have combined all information that is relevant to Dutch and international students. This includes this student program and travel information. If you need information during the IWR2016, the online platform will be the easiest way to get it. The platform will become active before 23 April 2016. WiFi for International Students Rotterdam University will provide all international students with temporary WiFi access codes. These codes will be given to you on the first day of the program. Additionally, free WiFi is available at the King Kong Hostel and many other locations throughout the city. If you have any questions regarding the WiFi access codes, please contact an IWR2016 staff member. Attendance Requirements During the International Week Rotterdam 2016, attendance for all participants is mandatory due to the allocation of ECTS or the granting of a participation certificate. The staff of IWR2016 will check student attendance several times a day. Students are responsible for making sure they are accounted for when attendance checks take place. When a student is not accounted for at a certain moment during the program, his or her name will be registered and sanctions will be in place. Sanctions for Rotterdam University Students For Rotterdam University/Hogeschool Rotterdam students, the sanction for being absent during part of the program is that he/she will not receive an ECTS (Dutch: studiepunt) for his/her participation in the International Week Rotterdam 2016. This means a student will have to re-do the program in another year. When a student has a proper reason for being absent during part of the program, he or she is required to send an email to IBK-BKM-student@hr.nl explaining the situation. If the reason for being absent is legitimate, the student will be allowed to 6

substitute his/her attendance in the international week by doing an additional assignment: If a student is unaccounted for during one attendance moment, he/she will be required to do an additional assignment after the IWR2016 has ended. If a student is unaccounted for during two attendance moments (or an entire day), he/she will be required to do a large additional assignment after the IWR2016 has ended. The end product of these assignments will be assessed and graded. The end product has to be graded sufficient in order to count as a substitute for missing part of the international week. Students that are unaccounted for during three or more attendance checks will not be able to substitute their attendance with an additional assignment and will therefore have to re-do the program in another study year. Sanctions for International Students For international students, the sanction for being absent during three or more attendance checks is that he/she will not receive a certificate for his/her participation in the International Week Rotterdam 2016. 7

Appendix A: Company Descriptions On the second day of the program, we will visit the Port of Rotterdam. As part of this trip, we will also make company visits. Four companies invited us to take a look at their facilities. At the start of the day, you can choose which company you want to visit. There are about 30 open slots per company, which will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. On this page, you will find more information on the companies that you can visit: Schenker Logistics Netherlands DB Schenker handles worldwide freight transport, mainly via rail transport. Their facilities in the Port of Rotterdam mainly handle the distribution of sea shipments inland and vice versa. Botlek Tanker Terminal The Botlek Tank Terminal is one of the most environmentally friendly terminals in the world. This state of the art facility has multiple jetties so that it can service ships and distribute their contents. This terminal is currently expanding so that it can store about 750,000 cubic meters of gasoline, (bio) diesel, jet fuel, alcohols & vegetable oil. The expanded capacity (current capacity is about 200,000 m3) will be in use by the end of 2016. Rio Tinto Minerals Rotterdam Rio Tinto s location in the Port of Rotterdam is its primary European distribution facility. Their Rotterdam operations deal with the distributions of the minerals that were mined in other parts of the world. AVR Waste Processing By using modern technologies, AVR has become the largest processor of residual waste in the Netherlands. Their Rotterdam facilities transform waste into steam, heat and electricity, which is then used in business and homes in the region. 16
