1 Summer School CLEAN TECH AT SEA WHY AND HOW TO CHANGE MARITIME TRANSPORTATION? AUGUST 5-17, 2013 MAN PrimeServ Academy (Frederikshavn) Martec Maritime and Polytechnic College (Frederikshavn) (Aalborg)
2 PURPOSE The course will both focus on issues where shipping is environmentally superior to other modes of transportation and issues where shipping is lacking behind. The course main objective is to engage participants in the on-going activities, challenges and opportunities arising from the evolution towards a more environmentally friendly maritime sector. To achieve this, the course is structured under the Problem Based Learning model developed at to address real-life problems in a hands-on way. The course provides theoretical lectures, case-study lectures, site visits and group projects during the two weeks summer course. In addition, the course will also comprise several social activities in order to facilitate networking and a relaxed environment. Leading scientific experts and practitioners in the maritime sector have accepted invitations to give guest speeches. The first days will be organized as open days to industry participants to allow interaction and networking with decision makers. BACKGROUND After decades of non-regulation, the maritime industry is now facing relatively tough environmental requirements from both regulators and the market. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has passed annexes to the MARPOL convention which together with EU and US legislation put pressure on shipping. Also shipping customers and ports are demanding better environmental performance and documentation. Fortunately, the combination of strict requirements and decades of land-based experiences in CleanTech gives huge business opportunities for those who can and will provide solutions to the problems some of these solution providers are Danish companies. Some ports and municipalities even see the upcoming legislative pressures as a lever of regional development and employment. WORKLOAD 5 ECTS ECTS (Delivered after handing in an article manuscript) TARGET AUDIENCE MSc and Engineering students enrolled in the following educations: Maritime management (ship design, engineering) Environmental policy Environmental governance Environmental management TOPICS COVERED The need for maritime action an NGO perspective Emission reduction through better engine technology Energy efficiency requirements Managing ballast water a new business opportunity Hybrid propulsion technologies in the shipping industry An introduction to Environmental Management Systems a focus on harbours A maritime service perspective; Retrofitting vessels for CleanTech How to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from maritime transport- a political perspective Site visits & Social activities And more 2
