ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS IN CRACOW FACULTY OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN 149 The Faculty of Industrial Design educates designers preparing them to creative work in the domain of industrial design. Moreover, the Faculty manages design, research, study and artistic works, co-operating within those areas with many institutions, e.g. The Institute of Industrial Design in Warsaw, The Central Institute for Protection of Workplace in Warsaw, Committee for Scientific Research, Ergonomic Committee and Ergonomic Commission of Polish Academy of Sciences, Jagiellonian University, Academy of Mining and Metallurgy, Academy of Economics in Cracow, Cracow University of Technology, The Association of Industrial Designers (SPFP) and manufacturing companies. Almost since the beginning of its existence, The Faculty has participated in the activities of international design organisations: ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design) and ICOGRADA (International Council of Graphic Design Associations.) Prof. Andrzej Paw³owski was elected Vice-President of ICSID in the years 1971 1973, and since 1994 the Faculty has been a member of this organisation. Prof. Ryszard Otrêba was the Vice-President of ICOGRADA in the years 1972 1977. The Faculty keeps contacts and co-operates with many foreign universities and takes part in international co-operation and university exchange programmes, i.e.: 1992 1996 Joint European Project TEMPUS JEP-02275 with the universities in Manchester, Dublin and Warsaw, 1996 1999 Joint European Project TEMPUS JEP-11101 with the universities in Kent (Canterbury-Maidstone-Rochester) and Toulouse, since 1996 a student exchange programme CEEPUS H-41 with the universities in Budapest, Ljubljana, Zagreb, Prague, Brno and Bratislava, since 1997 an exchange programme Socrates/Erasmus with the universities in Darmstadt, Essen, Frankfurt am Main, Offenbach, Bielefeld, Barcelona, Kent, Helsinki, Stokholm, Göteborg, Milan, Paris, Turku and Eindhoven. Teaching the following skills: analysing the existing solutions, selecting the information, making a list of evaluation criteria, formulating the design problems and preparing a list of design assumptions, verifying the solutions through trials and experiments carried out independently by the students and on the basis of existing aiding design techniques and methods, system and its surrounding analysis, preparing a timetable of design work with the clear outline of stages and selecting appropriate means of recording the particular parts of the design, among other things using specialised computer software, writing dissertations with regard to solving a design problem, carrying out preparatory research, working out the results, formulating conclusions, evaluating the state of the art research. CONTENT OF INSTRUCTION: Preparing the students for design work with the use of methods and techniques of formulating and solving design problems. The afore-mentioned problems are practised by the students on the examples of objects-products treated as elements of larger practical structures. An object-product is only a means of realisation of defined practice process. The features of the user and the object-product as well as the conditions of the realised process constitute its value. The tasks include 4 problem areas according to defined knowledge and skills indispensable in the design practice: problem area 1 basic level: analysing the selected object by defining its practical, ergonomic, aesthetic, construction, technological, and similar properties and relations existing between them; problem area 2 advanced level: the concept of practical structure of an object realising the defined practical process and its presentation in the functional model; problem area 3 specialisation: a practical object design being an element of a system realising the defined practice process and presentation of a prototype or model; problem area 4 diploma work: a practical object design being an element of a system realising the defined practice process and presentation of a prototype model as well as working out methods or a device aiding in the design process. The curriculum may be realised among other things on the example of the following problems: a seat a sitting person a practical situation. The department has at its disposal rich methodological resources in the form of tools and equipment aiding in the seat designing and extensive literature on the subject. FORMS OF INSTRUCTION: Individual tutorials. Seminar classes preceded by a lecture with slide show. Comments on students transitional work. Krzysztof Hamiga Department of Design for the Workplace, Ergonomic Design Studio HOURS PER WEEK: 8 8 8 8 12 12 16 2 CREDITS: 14 14 14 14 18 18 26 26 STATUS OF CLASSES: elective course of core instruction AIMS OF INSTRUCTION: Teaching the skills of: analysing the form and function of a technical object as well as its interaction with the human; formulating the design problem; generating new design solutions; concept recording and design documenting; using the data and theoretical base within the ergonomic design. CONTENT OF INSTRUCTION: The curriculum includes multiaspect form study of the technical object and creating a design synthesis, offering new values in the sphere of use and aesthetics. Special attention is paid to ergonomic criteria applied as a measure of man shaping artificial environment. Basic level: shaping the manipulation elements and sets (e.g. holders, handgrips, keyboards, and toys.) Advanced level: shaping objects and spatial structures of the workplace. Specialisation and diploma work: shaping of the complex function and utility objects with regard to their interaction with the human being. Developing the theoretical problems of human subjectivity in shaping the means of work. The problems existing at particular levels are treated flexibly according to students predispositions and interests and offers of co-operation with industry. The curriculum assumes the basic knowledge of design methods, the fundamentals of technologies and construction, the skill of drawing of an idea and final presentation of a designed object, skilful use of photographic technique and rendering drawing as well as CAD software. FORMS OF INSTRUCTION: Seminars, individual and group consultations, visits to the companies co-operating in the realisation of projects. Teaching aids: selected reading sources, standards, physical and computer models of the human being, techniques of recording the process of man and object interaction. CONTENT OF INSTRUCTION: Teaching is focused on the conceptual design with particular stress on considering the designed object as a carrier of meaning and with the aim of achieving the high level of innovativeness of solutions. The topics of the tasks mainly include practical objects in the areas of housing, recreation and rehabilitation. The students are encouraged to take up the design topics under design competitions. FORMS OF INSTRUCTION: Practical designing in particular with the use of modelling (access to the modelling workshop with the basic machine and tool equipment), individual tutorials, seminars. REMARKS: Admission limit in the studio 10 persons including the students on the 2nd-, 3rd-, 4th- and 5th year. CONTENT OF INSTRUCTION: Basic level: the methods of multicriteria product design; collecting and working out the information including recognising the market opportunity, users requirements and preferences, financial capabilities of the purchasers; analysing the competitive products and recognising the technological and manufacturing conditions of the manufacturer; formulating the design specification; designing in accordance with the specification. The design objects are medium-complicated industrial products selected by the student from prescribed thematic area. Specialisation: continuation of the curriculum preparing the students for the diploma work. When required the work includes research activities. The design objects are medium-complicated industrial products selected from a thematic area suggested by the student. Diploma work: preparing and defending the diploma work composed of a design work and a diploma dissertation. Type of activity: an independent work. Contact with the course leader within the diploma seminar. Within possibilities the design work is based on real needs. Topies related to saving energy and natural resources are preferred. Practical designing, individual tutorials, group seminars. Students receive a book New Product Development by J. Ginalski, M. Liskiewicz, J. Seweryn. Apart from that, specialist library is available in the studio. Credits are given successively at the end of each semester on the basis of current progress. There are obligatory reviews of students works (exams) at the end of a semester. CONTENT OF INSTRUCTION: Transferring the knowledge within the selected domains of descriptive geometry, rectangular view, rectangular and diagonal axonometry as well as descriptive perspective; also the knowledge of mathematical models, elements of symmetry, transformations including the topological ones, structures, 3-D object modelling on the basis of geometrical techniques, and the skill of analysing geometrical features of the objects. Lectures and exercises provide the knowledge of descriptive geometry, but problem tasks, which have design and analytical character, are individually executed by the students, who receive consultations and tutorials. The classes aim at enabling the students to acquaint themselves with the specificity and structure of the visual language in the domain of traditional media used to create pictures as well as electronic media currently used in common practice making the students aware of their features and possibilities. They also aim at enabling them to gain better knowledge of perception mechanisms and visual principles by continual practice. CONTENT OF INSTRUCTION: Visualising with the use of traditional and new visual media, such as painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and electronic media. The picture problems its specificity and numerous functions. Basic visualisation elements and methods. Knowledge on perception psychology, general knowledge in the history of art and orientation in the trends of quests in modern art are required. Practical classes fill 80% of course time. They assist in raising eye perception awareness and acquiring fluency in the use of a tool. Task topics of selected pictorial and visualisation problems are formulated so as to study particular problems in a profound and grounded way. Topics are executed in two stages: 1. by the study of nature, 2. in the creative part, which aims at an independent and creative formulation of a given task problem. BASIS FOR EVALUATION: Students get partial credits in particular topics and tasks realised currently in the defined timetable, and their total number is the basis for obtaining final credits at the end of a semester. All students works are evaluated during a review of works, which has the legal status of an examination, at the end of a semester.
ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS IN CRACOW FACULTY OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN 169 8552 BASIC LEVEL Visual Activities C 8553 ADVANCED LEVEL TEACHERS: Full Prof. Andrzej Ziêbliñski Department of Visual Arts, Visual Activities Studio C HOURS PER WEEK: 8 8 8 8 CREDITS: 7 7 7 7, elective studio AIMS OF INSTRUCTION: The aim of the curriculum is to develop creativity of the prospective artists-designers and their intellectual and workshop skills potential. The sense of studying consists in the cognition of creative process problems, continual work on sublimation of imagination, raising awareness on the basis of current art phenomena and its social functioning. CONTENT OF INSTRUCTION: The range of classes from cognitive and study stages to artistic creation attempts results from both traditional domains of art and contemporary media problems, including the electronic ones (video, computer.) The quest for the sources of inspiration in Nature is a basis of cognition of the visual language, its properties and awareness of eye perception problems as well as ability for their use. Knowledge on psychophysiology of perception, history of art and orientation in the trends of contemporary artistic quests are required. FORMS OF INSTRUCTION: Practice (practical exercises) in the multimedia studio and the video studio. The 2nd year students begin from the study from nature lighting and spatial problems, enhancing experiences both in the domains of drawing and painting. The 3rd year students improve the form of artistic message in a selected medium by taking up individual realisations. The scenarios of multimedia activities in the topics resulting from individual interests are possible to execute with the use of video technique and a computer. Drawing treated as a form of constant element of professional skills improvement is recommended. BASIS FOR EVALUATION: The basis of getting final credits at the end of a semester and permission to enter the final review of works (examination) is obtaining partial credits on time during the semester.
