3 1. Objectives BEd (Hons) Design and Technology - IE 320 This programme is aimed at secondary school teachers in the area of Design and Technology. It comprises a study of materials and materials processing, the different control technologies, design principles and history, energy systems and technology education. This programme aims at strengthening the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for teaching Design and Technology at the upper secondary level. An essential part of the programme is the design research project which allows teachers to undertake a design study in order to integrate theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the realisation of an artefact. 2. General Entry Requirements As per General Entry Requirements for admission to undergraduate degrees of the University. 3. Programme Requirements A Teacher s Diploma in the relevant field of study from the Mauritius Institute of Education. 4. Programme Duration Normal(Years) Maximum(Years) Degree: 3 Part time 5 Part time 5. Minimum credits required for the award of undergraduate degree. 135 (Including 60 credits for the Teacher s Diploma) 6. Credits per year Minimum 18, Maximum 48 credits, subject to regulation 4 above. 7. Assessment An overall total of 40% for combined continuous assessment and written examination components would be required to pass the module, without minimum thresholds within the individual continuous assessment and written examination. Written examinations for all the modules will be carried out at the end of the academic year (unless otherwise stated). 3

4 All modules have either 3 credits or 6 credits. Level I and Level II modules carry a weighting of 3, except for CS 1020 which carries a weighting of 1, EDS 2010 and TP 2000 carry a weighting of 5. Level III modules carry a weighting of 5 except COM 3010 which carries a weighting of 3. Each module will carry 100 marks and will be assessed as follows (unless otherwise specified) Assessment will be based on written examination of 2-3-hour duration carrying a weighting of 70% and continuous assessment a weighting of 30% of total marks except for the following modules, which will be assessed by continuous assessment only EDS 1020Y, CS 1020, EDS 2010, COM 3010 and DT 3001Y. EDS 1010Y, EDS 3010Y and COM 2010 will be assessed by: Examination (30%) and continuous assessment (70%). Professional Practice will be assessed through Portfolio (30%) and Teaching Practice (70%). Students should secure 50% to pass the professional practice. Continuous assessment may be based on laboratory works and/or assignment/s but should include at least a class test for non-pedagogical modules. 8. Grading Structure This will be as shown below taking into account that the pass mark for all modules is 40% (except for Professional Practice). Deadline for dissertation First draft to be submitted in week 10 of semester 2, Level 3 and final copies to be submitted in week 14 of semester 2, Level Repeat and Termination of Registration If the CPA of a student is < 40 for an academic year, the student will have to repeat the entire academic year, and retake modules as and when offered. However, s/he will not be required, if s/he wishes, to retake module(s) for which Grade C or above has been obtained. Students will be allowed to repeat only once over the entire duration of the Programme of Studies. Registration will be terminated if the CPA of the student remains below 40 at the end of an academic year and the student has already repeated one year of study. A student s registration will lapse at the end of the semester in which s/he has successfully completed the minimum requirements for the award of the degree. 12. For those programmes where there are no regular intakes, examinations for repeat modules will be organised upon recommendation of the Board of Studies. 8 B.Ed (Hons) FRENCH PT IE Objectives This programme is designed for in-service secondary school teachers of French involved primarily in the teaching of French language and French literature. It is a follow-up of knowledge and skills imparted at the Teacher s Diploma level. It is designed to further equip teachers with advanced concepts to teach languages and cultural skills in a changing environment. 2. General Entry Requirements As per General Entry Requirements for admission to Undergraduate degrees of the University. 3. Objectives BEd (Hons) Home Economics and Food Studies - IE348 This programme aims at enhancing the content knowledge and the pedagogical skills of Home Economics teachers who will be primarily involved in the teaching of Food and Nutrition/Food Studies at upper secondary level. In order to make the teaching and learning process meaningful and enjoyable, teachers need a good mastery of their subject area and various teaching and learning strategies as well as relevant attributes and predispositions. Hence, this programme provides a realistic balance between pedagogy and subject studies, building on the knowledge, attitudes and skills developed during the Teacher s Diploma Home Economics programme to further foster knowledge and skills in nutrition, food science, consumer studies, pedagogy and research methodology. It is anticipated that upon completion of this programme, the trainees will be empowered to teach Home Economics at lower secondary level and Food Studies at HSC level. 2. 18 BEd (Hons) Physical Education IE Objectives This programme is designed for post-diploma teachers involved in the teaching of Physical Education at the secondary level. The programme, which is built on prior knowledge and skills acquired, aims at further professional development with a view to encouraging selfinitiated, action-oriented research in a diversity of issues related to the teacher s world 2. General Entry Requirements As per General Entry Requirements for admission to Undergraduate degrees of the University. 3. Programme Requirements A Teacher s Diploma in the relevant field of study from the Mauritius Institute of Education. 4. Programme Duration Normal Maximum (Years) (Years) Degree: 3 Part time 5 part time 5. Minimum Credits Required for the Award of Undergraduate Degree 138 (Including 60 credits for the Teacher s Diploma). 6. Credits per Year Minimum 18, Maximum 48 credits, subject to regulation 4 above. Students should register for yearly modules and semester modules assessed jointly, only at the start of the module, at the beginning of the academic year. 7. Assessment An overall total of 50% for combined continuous assessment and written examination components would be required to pass the module, without minimum thresholds within the individual continuous assessment and written examination. Written examinations for all the modules will be carried out at the end of the academic year (unless otherwise stated). For a student to pass module CSE1010-e IT, a minimum of 30% should be attained in both Continuous Assessment and Written Examination separately, with an overall total of a minimum of 40% in this module. 24 Social Sciences with History / Geography / Sociology IE General Introduction The BEd Honours (PT) Social Sciences programme is designed for the in service secondary school teachers of Social Sciences (History, Geography and Sociology). It is a follow up of the knowledge and skills imparted at the Teacher s Diploma level. The programme aims to provide a broad education in the Social Sciences, with the option of specializing in any one of the three disciplines of Social Sciences, that is, History, Geography and Sociology. It will, therefore, further equip teachers to teach Social Studies at Forms I to III and either History, Geography or Sociology at Forms V and VI level, depending on their area of specialization. 2. General Entry Requirements As per General Entry Requirements for admission to undergraduate degrees of the University. 3. Programme Requirements A Teacher s Diploma in the relevant field of study from the Mauritius Institute of Education. 4. Programme Duration Normal Maximum (Years) (Years) Degree: 3 Part time 5 Part time 5. Minimum Credits Required for the Award of Undergraduate Degree 135 (Including 60 credits from the Teacher s Diploma). 6. Credits per Year Minimum 18, Maximum 48 credits, subject to regulation 4 above. 7. Assessment An overall total of 40% for combined continuous assessment and written examination components would be required to pass the module, without minimum thresholds within the individual continuous assessment and written examination. Written examinations for all the modules will be carried out at the end of the academic year (unless otherwise stated). All modules have either 3 credits or 6 credits. Level I and Level II modules carry a weighting of 3, except for CS 1020 which carries a weighting of 1, EDS 2010 and TP 2000 carry a weighting of 5. Level III modules carry a weighting of 5 except COM 3010 which carries a weighting of 3. 24

25 Each module will carry 100 marks and will be assessed as follows (unless otherwise specified): Assessment will be based on written examination of 2-3-hour duration carrying a weighting of 70% and continuous assessment a weighting of 30% of total marks except for the following modules, which will be assessed by continuous assessment only: BS 2010Y, CS 1020Y, EDS 1020Y, EDS 2010 and COM EDS 1010Y, EDS 3010Y, CS1020 and COM 2010 will be assessed by: Examination (30%) and continuous assessment (70%). Professional Practice will be assessed through Portfolio (30%) and Teaching Practice (70%). Students should secure a minimum of 50% to pass the module Professional Practice. Continuous assessment may be based on laboratory works and/or assignment/s but should include at least a class test for non-pedagogical modules. 8. Grading Structure This will be as shown below taking into account that the pass mark for the modules is 40% (except for Professional Practice). Deadline for Dissertation First draft to be submitted by the last working day of October 2014 and final copies to be submitted by the last working day of November Repeat and Termination of Registration If the CPA of a student is < 40 for an academic year, the student will have to repeat the entire academic year, and retake modules as and when offered. However, s/he will not be required, if s/he wishes, to retake module(s) for which Grade C or above has been obtained. Students will be allowed to repeat only once over the entire duration of the Programme of Studies. Registration will be terminated if the CPA of the student remains below 40 at the end of an academic year and the student has already repeated one year of study. A student s registration will lapse at the end of the semester in which s/he has successfully completed the minimum requirements for the award of the degree. 12. For those programmes where there are no regular intakes, examinations for repeat modules will be organised upon recommendation of the Board of Studies. It aims at developing their knowledge, skills and attitudes and upgrading their professional level to teach up to Form VI. The competencies in planning Art Curriculum, Examination and Evaluation will be also enhanced. They will be required to engage in critical debates and familiarize themselves with new trends and latest developments in the Art world and in the teaching of Art. 2.
