Plein Air & Studio Pastel Workshop in SUZHOU, CHINA with ALAN FLATTMANN October 23 November 3, 2015 Join Alan Flattmann for this unique opportunity to paint exotic Oriental settings on site and to experience firsthand the charm of Chinese culture. The workshop/tour will coincide with the opening of the 1 st Pastel Art Festival in Suzhou. The festival will feature exhibitions by renowned Chinese artists, the Pastel Society of France and a solo exhibition of Alan Flattmann pastels. The home base for the workshop will be a 4-star hotel. Each day there will be painting excursions to the beautiful Classical Gardens, Parks and Ancient Villages of Suzhou. Two Studio days will be devoted to Portraits and Figurative Painting of Chinese Characters. The Ming Gallery of Art in Suzhou will manage the tour and provide translation services. The workshop is designed to help beginners and advanced artists conquer the challenges of plein air painting and portrait painting from models. The workshop will cover the basics of landscape and figure painting. Alan will show how he creates bold pastel paintings with a multi-layered technique on pumice and sanded papers. In addition to pastel and sketching demonstrations, students can expect individual help with any medium. Painting sessions are in mornings and afternoons allowing plenty of time for lunches and exploring. Critiques are usually in the evenings before dinner. Non-painting companions are welcome and there will be much for them to do and see while the artists paint. Alan Flattmann is a PSA Master Pastelist, renowned painter, teacher and author. He was inducted into the Pastel Society of America Hall of Fame and is a recipient of the American Artist Art Masters Award for Pastel Teacher, as well as numerous other awards and honors. Destination Suzhou is a major city in the southeast of Jiangsu Province in Eastern China, about 100 miles southwest of Shanghai. The classical gardens in Suzhou were added to the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1997 and 2000. Suzhou is often called the Venice of the East. Home at Tiger Hill Wetland Park Accommodations Lodging will be at a modern 4 star hotel with private bathrooms, television, internet access and daily housekeeping.
