Exercise 5: Cultural Awareness Task Picking out information All read the facts below about the German school system. The German education system is slightly different from ours. Children aged 3-6 may attend nursery/kindergarten, but they do not have to go to school until they are 6. Children start school when they are 6 and have to go for 9 or 10 years at least. Grundschule is like our primary school and everyone learns the same subjects. Grundschule is from Year 1 Year 4. When they get to Year 4 students choose which kind of school to go to depending on ability and what they want to do. Parents and teachers help to guide students to the right choice of school for them. The 3 types of school are called Hauptschule, Realschule or Gymnasium. Hauptschule (years 4 9) teaches some of the same subjects as the Realschule and Gymnasium, but at a slower pace and with more practical, work related courses engineering, woodwork, carpentry etc. After going to a Hauptschule you would do part time enrolment in a vocational school alongside an apprenticeship until the age of 18. Realschule (Years 4 10) is where you study a range of subjects and depending on which exams you do can go on to Gymnasium or a vocational school and apprenticeship until 18. Gymnasium (Years 5-13) is like our grammar schools and students work towards a diploma called the Abitur and this school prepares students for university study or for a dual academic and vocational credential. Subjects include Classical Language, Modern Languages, Maths and Science related subjects. There is a 4 th type of school called a Gesamtschule (this is like our comprehensive school). It is not very popular and is only found in a few German states. If you complete 9 years at a Gesamtschule you receive a Hauptschule leavers certificate. If you complete 10 years at a Gesamtschule you receive a Realschule leavers certificate. German children only attend school in the morning. There is no provision for serving lunch. There is a lot more homework, mostly concerned with writing, reading and arithmetic. There are very few extracurricular activities as students do their homework in the afternoons. Bronze: Highlight 5 facts in the text that you find interesting.

Exercise 5: Cultural Awareness Task Writing text using research Bronze: List the 5 facts you identified, putting the information into your own words. Write in ENGLISH. Silver: Write a short paragraph explaining the differences between the English and German school system. Use the facts above (and your own research). Write in ENGLISH. Gold: Write a longer creative piece of writing, imagining you are a German student and telling us about which school you go to and what it is like. Include reasons for your opinions and detailed explanation. Write in ENGLISH. Continue on another piece of paper if necessary. _

Exercise 6 Cultural awareness Task Bronze: Draw a plan of a school in pencil. Label the rooms in German, using the vocabulary below. Silver: Use a dictionary to look up other rooms and label them on your plan as well. die Aula = school hall die Bibliothek = library der Saal = hall das Labor = science lab das Büro = office der Fussballplatz = football pitch der Gang = corridor der Tennisplatz = tennis court die Turnhalle = gym der Umkleideraum = changing rooms der Werkraum = workshop/studio das Lehrerzimmer = staffroom der Schulhof = playground das Klassenzimmer = classroom

Exercise 7 Geography skills Bronze: Label the German cities (listed in the box below) correctly on the map of Germany. Hamburg Hannover Berlin München Frankfurt Stuttgart Dortmund Düsseldorf Silver: Using an atlas or your knowledge label the countries that border Germany (coloured darker yellow on the map) correctly.
