Douglas Guy, and Monika Chavez Required Materials: Flashcards or an online Flashcard program Suggested Texts: German/English Dictionary and 501 German Verbs Helpful Websites: and Participation and Attendance Points: You MUST be present in the classroom in order to learn a language! You have the possibility to earn 5 participation points each day.! How do you lose participation points? Being late = -2 points Not participating in class = -3 points No show or unexcused absence = -5 points Not speaking German = -4 points Failing to earn participation points will adversely effect your grade! If you miss class more than 3 times (i.e. unexcused absences) it will result in a full grade letter drop! You have 3 free-be s for being late or absent. Speaking German: You are REQUIRED to speak German when you enter the classroom! Failing to do so will result in a loss of participation points.! How can you succeed? By code switching. When you do not know a word in German say it in English and I will give you the German equivalent. ASK how to say a word in German, by using the phrase: Wie sagt man auf Deutsch? ASK if you do not understand, by saying: Ich verstehe nicht. Können Sie das bitte wiederholen? Was bedeutet? Using your TIME-OUT cards. You will be given 4 time-out cards which should be used in Emergency language situations. For instance, if you do not understand what I am trying to explain in German or you need to clarify in English, use one of the time-out cards. 1

2 PLEASE KEEP ALL ASSIGNMENTS FROM THIS CLASS!!! Weekly Assignments: A PACKET is due each week on. Each packet includes 25 words, conjugation charts, and homework. FAILURE to turn in weekly packets will result in -10 points each week. 25 FLASHCARDS are due each week on. You can find the flashcard word in each packet. Please include the following on your flashcards: The word in German on one side The word in English or any other language you are learning or familiar with on the other side Include the German article (der, die, das, die) and the plural form of the word. Include the pronunciation of the word. If you are familiar with IPA (i.e. the International Phonetic Alphabet) you may use that. If you are not familiar with IPA, simply write it out how it sounds to you. HOWEVER, please listen to a recording on to ensure proper pronunciation. A vocabulary quiz and review of the weeks lessons will be given each. The vocabulary quiz and review is an activity, and you MUST be present in order to receive full credit. PLEASE speak with me in advance if you know you will be absent. Dictations: A total of two dictations will be given this semester. You MUST be present in order to receive full credit. PLEASE speak with me in advance if you know you will be absent. I will read the dictation aloud and you will write it down. Afterwards you will correct your mistakes. This will be done in class. Essays: A total of three in class essays will be given this semester. The essays are IN CLASS ONLY due to the abuse of online translators. You will be given the topic the day before and have the entire class hour to write the essay. Each essay must be at least one page in length. You MUST use lined paper and skip every other line, to allow for corrections. You MUST correct each essay in order to receive full credit. PLEASE speak with me in advance if you know you will be absent. Tests: A total of three online tests will be given this semester. All tests are on Canvas. They will be open for one week allowing you time to complete them. 2

3 Final: Your final is a group project of three people and you will have 15 minutes (i.e. 5 minutes each) to present about a region in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. You will need to present about the following topics: Facts and Geography of the region History Tourism (i.e. what can you do there?) A list of 10 vocabulary words You will be given 20 minutes in class to meet with your group on, April 5th to plan your group project. Sprechstunden (meetings with your teacher): You are required to meet with me two times this semester. Please plan for 10 minutes when meeting with me. During this meeting we will speak in German and you are allowed to ask me any questions about the class or clarify any thing you did not understand. You are also encouraged to ask about your grade at this time. I will provide sign up sheets at the beginning of each week. Extra Credit: You may play a German song that is appropriate in class. It must be in German. You may only do this 4 times. Each song that you play is worth 5 points. You may read a book that I have in German for 25 extra credit points. The rubric is on canvas. You may meet with a tutor and speak in German with them. Please have the tutor send me an confirming that you both met and spoke in German. Meeting with a tutor is worth 50 extra credit points. Grades: TOTAL point value = 4,000 Daily Participation points = 350 points total Weekly Packet = 100 points (1400 points total)! (Late packets will be docked 10 points weekly) Weekly Flashcards = 25 points (350 points total)! (Late flashcards will be docked 10 points weekly) Weekly Reviews = 25 points (350 points total)! (You MUST be present to earn these points) Dictations = 100 points (200 points total)! (Dictations MUST include the original and corrected versions) Essays = 100 points (300 points total)!
