INTRODUCTION Simulation - A limitless training methodology: pushing the limits in education, training and research. This is the theme for SESAM 2011. In this 17th SESAM meeting we would like to focus on the frontiers of simulation-based clinical training and evaluation, exploring the most groundbreaking didactic methodologies, the most advanced technologies, the introduction of simulation into new medical specialities - including surgery - and research into the transfer and impact of training, as well as the accreditation of teachers and simulation centres in order to constantly improve quality, boost professional motivation and reach new levels of patient safety. What didactic methodologies will we apply 20 years from now? What other uses can be made of existing technologies? Where can our efforts be best applied to develop new simulation systems? In what fields can different units and simulation centres collaborate to create synergies? How can further progress be made in analysing the efficiency and effectiveness of simulation-based training? What quality standards should be applied to simulation-based training and evaluation? How can we help disseminate clinical simulation among professionals and institutions and transcend borders and frontiers? 3
PROGRAMME These are some of the issues to be tackled in SESAM 2011. Discussions will focus on 4 lines of work: The search for excellence in the training of health professionals Paradigm shift in surgical training New fields of research into clinical simulation Taking simulation beyond borders and frontiers 1 The search for excellence in the training of health professionals In SESAM 2011 we want to discuss health care training using all types of clinical simulation and applied to all medical specialities in order to improve patient safety and care processes. We must make progress on applying quality standards to the creation and implementation of clinical simulation programmes. Emphasis will be placed on continuing professional training for healthcare professionals and on training resident doctors and undergraduate medical students, adapting training to meet the needs and demands of the population and seeking to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare provision. Exchanging experiences on simulation-based competence evaluation will no doubt be of interest to all. 2 Changing paradigm in surgical training In recent years, due to its considerable advantages, minimally invasive surgery has been gaining ground on open surgery. The use of innovative, simulation-based didactic methodologies makes it possible to train professionals in skills such as laparoscopy, microsurgery, endoscopic surgery and robotic surgery. We want to include these methodological and technological developments in the 17th SESAM meeting and help consolidate this emerging paradigm in surgery. 3 New fields of research into clinical simulation The issues related to the research and development of teaching methodologies and technological innovations in the field of simulation are essential. In view of this, it will be very interesting to discuss where efforts to develop new simulation systems would best be placed in coming years. Work on the efficiency and effectiveness of training will be particularly important during SESAM 2011. 4 Taking simulation beyond borders and frontiers The creation of synergies between institutions and countries enables simulation to be more widely and rapidly developed. Collaboration between countries within Europe, and between European countries and those on other continents must be one of our objectives. During the Granada meeting we will also aim, for many reasons, to transcend geographical frontiers and promote collaboration between countries and specialties in all parts of the globe. TYPES OF SESSIONS The programme addresses the spectrum of simulation through: Keynote presentations Group presentations Interactive workshops Hands-on sessions Pro-con debates Roundtable discussions Videoconference Workshops. Pre-meeting Workshops, including Workshops in Second Life (Iavante Virtual World). Live broadcasting of a robotic surgery operation using the DaVinci telesurgical system. Online broadcasting of the plenary sessions. SESAM 2011 is open to everyone actively involved with simulation or with the practical execution of simulation in the areas of education, training and research. The main program starts on Thursday, June 2nd, with preconference workshops being held on Wednesday June 1st. The closing ceremony is on Saturday, June 4 th. 4 5
MEETING WORKSHOPS IN THE IAVANTE MEDICAL SIMULA- TION CENTRE The meeting workshops will take place in the Granada conference and exhibition centre and the Iavante Medical Simulation Center (CMAT) located in Granada. The CMAT simulation centre, headquarters of the Iavante Foundation, is a showcase for groundbreaking medical training where the Foundation provides the most advanced simulation techniques applied to training and healthcare and also tests new methodologies. The training that Iavante provides medical professionals is based on simulating real situations using robots, virtual simulators with display and tactile sensation, actors simulating patients, the Da Vinci surgical telemanipulation system, etc. In order to enhance the realism of simulation-based training methods Iavante has installed highly realistic environments that mirror the natural settings where various stages of the care process take place, such as operating theatres, critical rooms, consultation rooms, and even out-of-hospital areas (urban street and domestic setting). The centre is located in Granada s Health Sciences Technology Park and is surrounded by real university, hospital, corporate and technology transfer settings, enabling Iavante to use the simulation synergies occurring in this environment to its best advantage. 6 7
VENUE Sesam 2011 will be held in the Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones, one of the most modern buildings in Granada. This conference and exhibition centre is housed in an intelligent building that provides the best services available to date in a building of its kind in Granada. Built on seven levels and occupying 40,000 square metres, the centre has been designed to blend in with its surroundings. It is located in the centre of Granada, a few minutes walk from the main shopping area, and surrounded by a number of the city s most modern three- and four-star hotels. In spite of its central location, the new ring road makes the centre directly accessible from anywhere in Spain, with Granada airport only eight minutes away. The centre has a number of halls and spaces hosting a wide range of events year round, including scientific conferences, trade shows, entertainment events, concerts, product presentations, video and teleconferences, etc., and is equipped with the most advanced communication, audiovisual and office automation technology and equipment. GRANADA Granada, in the south of Andalusia (Spain) is one of the most beautiful and captivating cities in Europe, with an important artistic and cultural heritage that can be seen wherever you go. Apart from the world-famous Alhambra and the Albaicin district, declared UNESCO human heritage sites, Granada also has other unique building such as its 17th century renaissance church, the Royal Chapel, the monasteries of the Cartuja and San Jeronimo, the Parque de las Ciencies, and a number of museums and public gardens. With its international airport and network of roads making it easily accessible from the rest of Andalusia, Spain and also Europe, Granada is an open, international city, and the first choice for foreigners coming the Spain to learn Spanish. One of Granada s main attractions is its rich and varied culinary tradition: visitors should be sure to visit the many restaurants and bars offering tasty local dishes (migas, baby broad beans with ham, Sacromonte omelette, gazpacho) and discover the art of the tapa, a unique way of enjoying good food and traditional Andalusian cooking. 8 9 Images property of the Provincial Tourism Board of Granada.
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS AND WORK IN PROGRESS ORGANISATION CONTACT Scientific communications The different scientific communications at SESAM 2011 will include: Oral presentations Poster sessions Workshops They should deal with at least one of the following topics: The search for excellence in the training of health professionals Posters Poster measurements (widthxheight) : 1m X 1.2m Authors are responsible for setting up their posters.
