2 Housing fairs are important meeting places where builders, manufacturers, designers and service-providers come together and introduce their products directly to consumers. They provide a forum for the presentation of leading-edge research and practical applications in the fi eld of housing and decoration. ENJOY A SUMMER DAY FULL OF DREAMS COME TRUE Every summer 150,000 Finns head for the annual housing fair to see the latest trends in home construction, furnishing and design. Housing fairs are a delightful experience for the whole family, and they help to continuously improve the national standard of housing and quality of life. Housing fairs have been arranged in various parts of Finland for the past 40 years. Builders and designers can try out their latest concepts in practice, for example in architectural and design competitions. And the fairs inspire a multitude of creative ideas about energy effi ciency, renovation, indoor and outdoor furnishing, garden design and other key aspects of modern living. Finland s annual housing fairs are joint ventures between the Finnish Housing Fair Cooperative Organisation (Suomen Asuntomessut) and the individual town or city hosting the fair. The fairs are showcases for many different types and sizes of furnished houses and gardens. Visitors can get to know the kinds of building materials and energy-conserving innovations now available, as well as the prices and technical details of the buildings. Furnishings are provided by builders, decorators, designers and specialised manufacturers.

3 A BEAUTIFUL FUTURE IN KUOPIO The city of Kuopio is a centre of culture and technology in an idyllic setting in Finland s Lake District. It is a uniquely attractive host for the 2010 Housing Fair, open from 16 July to 15 August. The city has been making preparations for the event ever since 2004, drawing up detailed plans for land use, municipal services and traffi c arrangements. The Housing Fair itself will be located in the suburb of Saaristokaupunki, the Town of Islands, a park-like diversifi ed residential area which is being created on the islands and headlands of Lake Kallavesi. The Saaristokatu road passing through the lake and island landscape enhances the beauty and practicality of this family-home development area. The Saaristokaupunki suburb as a whole will be home to about 14,000 residents within a few years.
