1 Youth for Decent Work Competition Decent Work means a safe and healthy working environment for ALL Now in its third year, this video competition is not just about winning that great prize to New York, which no doubt is a great motivator, but it is also about new learning. It is about learning new skills, to participate on a team, to understand how to research and investigate, learning about new topics which are beneficial now and into the future, to explore topics from different viewpoints, learning to make interesting film and to understand how the working world operates. Wow that sure is a lot of learning, but we know from our past winners that the process can be a whole lot of fun for everyone!!! This year, our theme focusses on a safe and healthy working environment, which is crucial to the well-being of everyone in society, and an essential element of the Decent Work framework. In previous years the competition was themed as Decent Work in the context of the Irish Labour Movement and the history of the 1913 lockout followed by an examination of the concept of income inequality and its impact, not only on workers but also their families, the community and wider society. This year we are asking students to consider the importance of a safe and healthy workplace in the context of the Decent Work framework, what it means to students and workers and its importance to wider society. We also want teams to portray their understanding of the role for trade unions in achieving Decent Work and helping to keep our workplaces safe and healthy for everyone. Our Youth Connect programme will provide additional information and resources on this topic through our FREE schools programme and our NEW Safe and Healthy Workplace workshops which can be booked via our website or directly by to info@youth-connect.ie This competition is a great way for students to explore in greater detail work relevant topics and express their own unique understanding and perception of the issue. It will help students to identify what is important about what they have learned, find a way to express that creatively within a group, work collaboratively and develop skills to create a video, which is educational and entertaining. Students also get to experience scripting, shooting, designing graphics/animation, video editing plus lots of other cool creative stuff. The Competition This competition is about helping each team display their learning and understanding of what a safe and healthy workplace is, its effect on society and how Decent Work can be achieved to address it, through the medium of film. Teams of between two and four students, along with one of their teachers, are invited to create a short three minute collaborative video, giving their interpretation of the importance of a safe and healthy work environment, what it means for young people and how it can be achieved in the context of a Decent Work agenda. Eligibility This competition is open to ALL Second-level and Youthreach students, and schools may enter as many different teams as they wish. Entry is FREE.
