2 What s a World Expo? An event involving Governments of the countries around the world, International Organizations, Civil Society and private sector A display with the purpose of the education of the public An event that addresses a specific theme to demonstrate the progress achieved in one or more branches of human endeavour, or show prospects for the future

3 The BIE and World Expos The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) is the international governing body responsible for overseeing and regulating the calendar, the bidding, the selection and the organization of World and International Expos. BIE is an international intergovernmental organization (161 member state) established in Paris in 1928 by the Convention relating to International Exhibitions which provides the definition and the objectives of Expos, as well as the international rules for organization and participation.

4 What is Expo Milano 2015? Expo Milano 2015, Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life, is a global cultural, educational and scientific event which aims to explore the global food and sustainable development challenge. It will be the largest worldwide event ever organized to unite countries, institutions and citizens around the world to discuss and discover issues related to food production, availability and safety, nutrition and the culture of food.

5 Key facts and Expo Milan 2015 targets Six month event spanning from May 1 st to October 31 st million visitors (30% foreigners) expected at the exposition site in billion citizens to be reached around the globe from through Cyber Expo and the Expo Global Communications program 140 countries expected to participate with exhibitions and delegations 1.1 million square meter exposition site: 60 self built exhibition spaces for Official Participants; 5 theme pavilions; theatre and performing arts center Over 2,000 events - world debates, conventions & policy meetings, cultural & gastronomic events - forecasted during six months on-site and in surrounding territory and more events all over Italy

8 The Expo Milano 2015 experience: bringing together the theme, participants and the exposition site The entire exhibition site will embody the theme through a common and continuous interpretation of the Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life sub themes by participant pavilions, theme pavilions and events. Innovative theme itineraries - conceptual ways connecting all areas relative to specific themes - will be proposed to the visitor to facilitate the exploration of themes and interests, including visit itineraries dedicated to exploring Expo 2015 Sustainability and the Smart City model.

12 The theme: Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life Expo 2015 will be an extraordinary universal event displaying tradition, creativity and innovation in the business of food. The common core is the idea that everyone on the planet should have access to food that is healthy, safe and sufficient. Expo 2015 aims at being a milestone in the long journey made by humankind for decades

17 A platform of concrete proposals Proposals to help governments, businesses, organizations and individuals to find real solutions to the problems related to nutrition. Expo Milano 2015, a worldwide forum for a final Agreement and Declaration. A few examples: A code of ethics to combat waste Moral suasion to minimize waste through information and education of consumers; Policies for people involved in the food distribution sector; Support for associations specialized in the food recovery for the poor. Anti-speculation measures Volatility in food prices is a serious risk to the weakest part of the population; Implementation of the regulation of the food market; Set the issue on the actual agenda of government policies.

18 A platform of concrete proposals Food education Food education can contribute concretely to the dissemination of knowledge and ways of integrating dietary models, with a focus to a peaceful integration between different peoples and cultures Food and fragility Policies for citizens which for social and economic conditions result in more fragile conditions: pregnant women, new mothers, children, elderly, disabled

20 The European Union and Expo 2015: a strategic partnership The Universal Exhibition of 2015 coincides with the target year of the UN Millennium Development Goals and the Theme Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life is relevant for most of the MDGs The EU is a key international actor in the field of nutrition policies. Elements as the CAP, Research & Innovation policy and its development cooperation programs greatly influence the international scenario and debate on nutrition The EU may take advantage of the unique platform provided by Expo Milano 2015 to communicate its message and make its future activities and policies more widely known to the general public

23 Why a new participation concept Exceptional opportunity of outreach and promotion on Site: Visibility towards all of the expected 20 Mln visitors EU logo and physical presence inside the Zero Pavilion dedicated to presenting the Theme of the Expo Collaboration with Developing Countries through the Thematic Clusters Events such as conferences, meetings, workshops, Expo by night, High-Level Summit Campaigns and promotional activities (also thanks to modern technologies) JRC ISPRA (Visitor s Center): will provide logistic and scientific support

25 Collaboration between JRC and EXPO EXPO will address the interplay between policy, science and citizens across the theme The main target public for JRC-EXPO collaboration will be: Experts and scientists from different countries participating in the scientific conferences at the EXPO Participants in events organized by other Commission Services VIPs (Ministers, CEO) who wish to visit ISPRA General Public visiting the region JRC will provide support for programs of EXPO scientific events

26 Collaboration between EU and EXPO EXPO will address the interplay between policy, science and citizens across the theme At EXPO Site: Presence of the EU in Zero Pavilion and/or in Thematic areas Showcasefor the results of Lombardy Region and JRC joint projects Discussions with concerned thematic DG of the EC are foreseen. Synergies with the Italian Presidency of the EU (second half 2014): Preparatory events are foreseen

27 Collaboration between EIT and EXPO? To be explored: bilateral discussions with DG EAC and EIT will take place Given that the EIT aim at creating a new European way of delivering essential economic growth and societal benefits through innovation and Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) EXPO can offer: Visibility to the KICs in areas of high societal need with a focus on priority topics related to the EXPO: Sustainable Energies (KIC Inno Energy), (Climate-KIC), (EIT ICT Labs), and future KICs (Food4Future ) An incubator for new ideas to solve needs related to sustainable food production and sustainable energy

A place where studentscan develop entrepreneurial spirit and explore possible solutions to translate innovative ideas into products A place where scientists can meet policy makers, citizens and civil society out of the labs, showing how research can be translated in something useful to meet daily-life s needs

EXPO Milano 2015 can: Be aglobal exchange platform where societal challenges can be discussed Stimulate EU innovation capacity Provide ideas to translate innovation in entrepreneurship Showcase the best technologies that Europe can offer to solve world societal challenges Be a place to raise awareness andpublic acceptance on new technologies (i.e water sanitation and reuse) Contribute to increase European sustainable growth
