How to get active Community exercise classes There are many different opportunities for older people in Southwark to exercise. There are exercise classes which run within community settings, there are guided group walks in different parks and there are sessions within the local leisure centres, all of which are detailed in this booklet. All these sessions vary in intensity and type of exercise. So no matter how you would like to exercise, there is an option available in Southwark! Southwark Council runs free exercise classes for older adults including chair-based exercise classes and gentle aerobics sessions. The aim of these classes is to help you stay independent for longer. The classes take place in community venues and sheltered housing units. All our instructors are fully trained and have lots of experience so will be able to tailor exercises to individual needs. Guided group walks Southwark Council coordinates a programme of FREE group walks, led by volunteer walk coordinators. The walks provide people with an opportunity to take part in a healthy activity in a fun and social setting. These for people aged 60+. We run a programme called Silver in all our centres which is age of 60. The Silver programme has 21 sessions per week ranging from Silver gym to Silver aqua aerobics. The Silver programme costs 1 per year to join and then each session costs 1 per person. To join, you will need to will also need to take along proof of your age, such as your Freedom Pass. All our Silver sessions are detailed on the next page. For further information about the programme, please ask at your nearest leisure centre or visit www.southwark-leisure.com. There are also other opportunities for you to exercise in our leisure centres. All the sessions in our centres are available on a direct debit membership or on a pay as you go basis on a Leisure Axess membership. Southwark leisure centres Southwark leisure centres Other memberships available If you do not want to attend a Silver class, there are lots of other sessions available at leisure centres in Southwark, including yoga and body balance. To attend these activities, people over the age of 60 are eligible for a concessionary Leisure Axess membership which costs just 3 per year. You will then pay a reduced rate for each class/booking with the prices ranging from 2.60 to 6.10 per person. Monthly membership If you would prefer to use the facilities without worrying about how much each session costs, then this option could be of interest to you. Choice Concession is a monthly membership to Silver users at a discounted price. For 24 a month you will have off peak access to the gym, pool and exercise classes (where available in centre). Off peak times start as early as 6.30am until 4pm from Monday to Friday. If you prefer no time restrictions at all (including weekends) then the membership cost is 32 per month. The SLIPS strength and balance programme What is it and who is it for? SLIPS (Southwark and Lambeth Integrated Care Pathway for Older People with Falls) helps older people who are experiencing falls, are at risk of falls or are fearful of falling, to improve and maintain their independence. SLIPS run a number of exercise classes and home exercise programmes designed to improve muscle strength, balance and coordination. Classes are free of charge and are held at various venues across Southwark. Referrals to the classes or home exercise programme can be made by any healthcare professional e.g. a GP or physiotherapist. Individuals can also self-refer by completing a referral form from the website or by calling the number below.
