INFORMATION FOR GUESTS VISITING MAHALI MZURI Get set for a wild ride on safari in Kenya, where nature always has the last word. This most awe-inspiring of landscapes is the setting for Mahali Mzuri, Sir Richard Branson s tented camp in a pristine part of the African bush. Positioned within the Maasai Mara ecosystem, this is the place to be for a front row view of the abundant game in the area. The camp is also in the path of the world-famous annual Great Migration. Mahali Mzuri is located in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy and there are 13,500 hectares of bush to explore. Against the backdrop of a valley and sprawling plains as far as the eye can see, visitors to Mahali Mzuri can expect exciting game drives with experienced Guides, delicious meals, a cosy and relaxing atmosphere at our camp and in a uniquely designed, spacious and luxurious tent. Location - Mahali Mzuri is about 240km almost due west of Nairobi and the best way to arrive is by plane from the city's Wilson Airport which serves domestic destinations within Kenya. Flights take approximately 1 hour and we can arrange transfers between the international and domestic airports for you and recommend hotel accommodation in Nairobi if you need to plan for an overnight stay. Once you arrive at the Mara North airstrip transfers to the camp are included in the rates. Game drives - We have open 4x4 Land Cruiser vehicles, seating a maximum of six guests and there are early morning and late afternoon game drives. Night game drives are also available and can be arranged by guests whilst at Mahali Mzuri. We can also pack you a picnic lunch and set off on a full day drive to make the most of the bush. Safari Walks can also been arranged, and will be tailored specifically to the guests. They usually last around two hours and focus on the plant life and smaller game. Facilities and activities The central Main Tent features a main lounge area with an open fireplace, a library of books, ipads for guest use, ipod docking stations and speaker systems, a games console and a TV/DVD player for those who wish to keep in touch with
the news or sport. We will also have binoculars available for guests (although it s a good idea to bring your own!) and a telescope for stargazing plus our 12 metre outdoor infinity pool, big enough for a leisurely swim or a refreshing dip. There is a large decked area where breakfast and lunch will be served and a communal table inside seating 24. The tents - We have 12 unique tented suites sleeping a maximum of 24 guests at any time. The tents are perched on a ridge looking over the valley with a distinctive design adapted to the local climate and terrain. There are six tents on either side of the Main Tent, each accessible by a shared walkway, the furthest of which is approximately a 5 minute walk from the Main Tent. Ten of the 12 tents are designed to sleep two adults and all can be split into twin beds. The remaining two tents are configured so that the sitting area is enclosed with fold-out sofa beds accommodating up to two additional guests. Dining - You certainly won t go hungry! From early morning snacks prior to game drives to multiple course menus in the evening the food served at Mahali Mzuri will be one of the highlights of your stay. We can cater for those with special dietary needs so just let us know in advance and we ll do our best to have exactly what you need. At breakfast a continental buffet will be served with hot dishes available à la carte, and guests typically share tables it s a great time to chat with your fellow travellers about the wildlife you saw earlier that morning. Lunch is normally served on the main deck with individual tables and guests can order from the à la carte menu. Dinner could be around a large communal table, out in the bush or somewhere private just for two!
Children We recommend children be aged 6 years of age and above to stay at Mahali Mzuri and they must be at least 6 years old to participate in the daily game drives and accompanied by their parents. Children of all ages must be under parental supervision at all times whilst in camp and those under the age of 12 are not permitted on safari walks. We have two tents which are able to accommodate additional guests in the separate enclosed sitting room. We have children's books, games and kites, plus a TV, DVD player and games console for extra entertainment. We would be delighted to organise tailored activities to further educate our younger guests on their African surroundings and the local wildlife. Baby-sitting can be arranged but please advise at the time of booking if this may be required. Special food and beverages or simple snacks and light meals can be prepared according to your child s tastes. Spa treatments - In a more secluded spot a short walk from the Main Tent is our spa treatment room offering eco-friendly treatments using the Africology range of products which are made from 100% essential oils and natural plant extracts. Visas and immigration - Virtually all visitors to Kenya will need a visa to enter the country however this can be obtained on arrival at the airport on payment of a cash sum, currently US$50. We recommend carrying at least this amount per person travelling plus a few extra American dollars for emergencies. Visitors are also required to have at least two blank pages in their passport which must be valid for 6 months beyond your expected departure date from Kenya. As advice can change on a regular basis we recommend you check with the guidance issued by your government s State Department or Foreign Office before you set off on your journey. When is the best time to visit? For game viewing the Olare Motorogi Conservancy has abundant wildlife year round, and Kenya s position straddling the equator means there isn t a huge amount of variation in temperature throughout the year. You can expect average highs of about 30 C/86 F in the months from December to March with somewhat cooler temperatures from July to September during the height of the migration. Due to its elevation temperatures in the evening do drop to around 15 C/59 F however it rarely gets much colder than this.
