3 Deposit A deposit of $100 per student is required on arrival in case of damages. This will be refunded at the end of the course if no damages are caused. Other things to bring Please bring casual, comfortable, everyday clothes such as jeans, t-shirts, jumpers, etc. Please remember that the program includes lots of sports and activities including some activities where the students get quite wet and dirty. In Orlando, the weather can be hot, sunny and humid (so suncream is required) but it also rains a lot in the afternoon so a light rain jacket is also required. Please also remember to bring: Swimming clothes Two towels, (one for showers and one for the swimming pool) A bath robe and slippers Insect repellent Shampoo, shower gel, etc. Sports clothes and sports shoes Comfortable shoes and some old shoes that can get wet and dirty Clothes for the weekly disco It can be hot and sunny, but it may also rain so please bring clothes for both types of weather including a light waterproof jacket and sweater. Electrical adaptors for hairdryers and cell phone chargers, etc. Electrical adaptors are very difficult to buy in the USA, so please come with international or US adaptors. These can normally be bought at your outgoing International Airport. The electrical voltage in the US is 110v. PLEASE REMEMBER TO NAME ALL CLOTHES AND OTHER BELONGINGS! Bedding is provided. Sports equipment Kings provides all sports equipment including tennis rackets, etc. Students are welcome to bring their own equipment but they are responsible for their own equipment and all equipment should be clearly named. Laundry An optional laundry service is included in the cost for students staying 3 weeks or longer. Dry cleaning and special treatments for delicate clothes are not available. Please label all clothing with the student s name. Please note Kings shall not be liable for student property that is damaged or missing during the laundry process. Student clothing is laundered by Kings at the students own risk. 3
4 Accommodation The accommodation at Orlando is modern, simple and comfortable. The accommodation is arranged in separate residential houses for boys and girls, located off site within a 20-minute drive (free shuttle bus provided). Rooms do not have locks, for safety reasons. Therefore we would advise students not to bring items of great value and to bring locks for their suitcases in order to provide a safer storage area. Please note that Kings cannot accept responsibility for any items left in the student s bedroom. Remember: students are able to place their money in the school bank. There are staff in each residential house to supervise children at night and to help the children in case of problems. The staff will also make sure that no children are scared or homesick at night. Bathrooms Communal bathrooms are situated in each residential house. Boys and girls have separate bathrooms. Lesson times Students will have lessons in the afternoon and sports/activities in the morning. Student Bank Kings operates a Student Bank where students can leave pocket money (dollars only) and their passports and airline tickets. The Bank is open at least 3 times per week for students to take out / pay in their money. KINGS IS ONLY RESPONSIBLE FOR MONEY WHICH IS DEPOSITED IN THE STUDENT BANK. STUDENTS MUST NOT LEAVE MONEY IN THEIR SUITCASES! Kings cannot look after items such as cameras, i-pods, laptops, etc. and these are the students responsibility at all times. Foreign Money Please note that Kings is not insured to hold foreign currency in the Student Bank. We cannot change foreign currency and students are responsible for changing their money before they arrive in the USA. PLEASE BRING POCKET MONEY ONLY IN DOLLARS. Sending Extra Pocket Money In an emergency, parents can send extra money to their children. To do this, please Kings Summer (enquiries@kingssummer.com) for instructions. 4
5 Telephoning It is not possible to speak to students during lesson times or during activity times. Students are welcome to bring their own cell phone but they are responsible for looking after their phone. If bringing a cell phone, please remember to bring a US adaptor for the charger. Please put the student s name on both the phone and the charger. Students will have Wifi access on campus and at the boarding houses. Other access to and internet is available at least 3 times per week and students can receive and send s using hotmail, yahoo, etc. Fire There are regular fire evacuation practices. Illness and medical treatment If a student feels ill, they must tell their group leader or a member of staff immediately. There is always at least one trained first-aider on site at school and in the boarding houses. If a student has a cold or minor illness, we will arrange for the student to go to the pharmacy for advice and medicine. For more serious illnesses or where advised by the pharmacy, we will arrange for the student to visit the doctor. If a student has an accident or is seriously ill, we will arrange for them to go to hospital. IMPORTANT if a student has a medical condition such as asthma or an allergy, please inform the school in writing at the time of booking. The student should also bring a note with details of their illness with them. Please note that we do not have facilities for children with disabilities. IMPORTANT if a student requires a particular medicine, please ensure that the student brings the medicine with them to school. Please notify the school in writing in advance and please ensure that the student brings a note (in English) to school with details of their medication and that the student informs the school staff. IMPORTANT - Students should ensure that they have adequate medical / travel insurance. This can be booked through Kings if you wish. At the Airport: If the student is booked with the airline as an unaccompanied minor, it is VERY IMPORTANT to inform us in advance. Students will be met at the Airport by a Kings guide or the appointed Driver. Students should look for a sign which says Kings Orlando Summer Center. If a student cannot find the Kings guide, the student should go to the Airport Information Desk and show the staff a copy of their Kings Confirmation Letter. In this situation, it is important 5
6 not to panic. Airports are big and busy, but Kings has been collecting students for many years. We will look after them! We advise all students to travel with the following document: Kings Booking Confirmation Letter This document may be requested by immigration on arrival. For flight delays or other travel emergencies, please telephone the Kings Summer Center emergency number: Discipline and School Rules We want all our students to have a good time and feel relaxed and safe so it s essential for everyone to follow the school rules: Bedroom rules All children are expected to make their beds and keep their room tidy!!!! 7 Students who damage school property or tamper with fire alarm systems will be charged and may be referred to the Police. Students must be polite and respectful to the school staff and to other students. Kings reserves the right to immediately expel a student who is found to be stealing, bullying, fighting, drinking alcohol or who is constantly rude, disruptive or violent. A student who is expelled will be sent home immediately at the expense of the parents. Discipline Procedure The Discipline Procedure is as follows: 1. First Warning if a student behaves unacceptably, they will be asked to stay behind after class / activity and they will be given a first official warning. Their behavior will be recorded in writing on a bad behavior form. 2. Second Warning if the student behaves badly again, the same procedure will be followed. In addition their group leader will be informed and the student may receive a punishment such as missing an activity or being given extra homework to complete. 3. Third Warning if the student behaves badly once again, they will be sent to the Center Manager and they will receive a third written warning and may be given another punishment such as missing an excursion or being moved to a new class or boarding house. Their group leader and / or parents will be informed and the student will be informed that they are now on final warning and that any further bad behavior could result in expulsion. 4. Fourth Step at this stage the student may be expelled (this will be at the discretion of the Center Manager). Please note that in the case of expulsion, no refund is given and all travel expenses will be charged to the student / parent. At every stage, the student will be given an opportunity to improve their behavior but continuous bad behavior will not be accepted. If you have any questions before the start of the course, please contact Kings Summer (enquiries@kingssummer.com or telephone: + 44 (0) ). 7
