Satisfactry Academic Prgress Plicy This plicy defines satisfactry academic prgress fr all Bstn University Schl f Law financial aid recipients in the fllwing LL.M. prgrams: LL.M. in Taxatin, including the residential and nline prgram, the Seven Semester J.D./LL.M. in Taxatin, and the Six-Semester J.D./LL.M. in Taxatin LL.M. in Banking and Financial Law, including the Seven Semester J.D./LL.M. in Banking and Financial Law and the Six-Semester J.D./LL.M. in Banking and Financial Law LL.M. in American Law LL.M. in Intellectual Prperty Law Executive LLM in Internatinal Business Law The Directr r Assciate Directr f each LL.M. prgram and, under certain circumstances, the Academic Standards Cmmittee, the Graduate Tax Prgram Cmmittee, the Graduate Prgram in Banking and Financial Law Cmmittee, r the Executive LL.M. Cmmittee determines whether r nt a student is maintaining satisfactry academic prgress tward the achievement f their LL.M. degree. The Schl f Law evaluates the satisfactry academic prgress f each LL.M. student at the end f each payment perid. The Academic Standards Cmmittee is cmprised f a faculty chairpersn and tw ther faculty members. The Assciate Dean fr Academic Affairs and the Assciate Dean fr Student Affairs are exffici members f the Cmmittee. The Graduate Tax Prgram Cmmittee shall cnsist f the Directr f the Graduate Tax Prgram, wh shall serve as Chair f the Cmmittee; the Assistant Dean fr Graduate and Internatinal Prgrams; a member f the full-time faculty f the Schl f Law; and such ther members f the full-time faculty f the Schl f Law and the adjunct faculty f the Graduate Tax Prgram as may be recmmended by the Prgram Directr and appinted by the Dean f the Schl f Law. The Graduate Prgram in Banking and Financial Law Cmmittee shall cnsist f the Directr r Assciate Directr and such ther members f the full-time faculty f the Schl f Law as may be recmmended by the Prgram Directr r Assciate Directr and appinted by the Dean f the Schl f Law. The Executive LL.M. Cmmittee is appinted by the Dean. The Academic Directr f the Executive LL.M. prgram r his/her designee shall serve as Cmmittee Chair. Federal regulatins require that schls establish satisfactry academic prgress standards. T be eligible t receive any type f financial assistance, including federal lans, all students at Bstn University must meet all applicable academic criteria fr their prgram. The Law Financial Aid Office des nt impse any academic prgress criteria beynd the regulatins and plicies established by the Schl f Law. In rder t retain their financial aid, students are required t cmply with all academic requirements fr their degree prgram. Students wh fail t maintain satisfactry academic prgress must be infrmed f their status and may be placed n financial aid prbatin. The standards f satisfactry prgress measure a student s
perfrmance which includes cmpletin f required credits and cursewrk, the minimum required grade pint average and the maximum time frame fr cmpletin f the degree. Ntificatin f Lack f Satisfactry Academic Prgress Students wh have nt met the standards fr satisfactry academic prgress will receive written ntificatin frm their LL.M. prgram with cpies t the Law Financial Aid Office. Dcumentatin f decisins cncerning a student s status f satisfactry academic prgress, prbatin, dismissal, appeal, reinstatement, r re-establishment f satisfactry academic prgress shall be transmitted t the student and maintained in the student s academic file. Prbatin Students wh fail t meet academic prgress criteria may be placed n financial aid prbatin. Failure t imprve ne s academic standing by the end f the prbatinary perid will result in the lss f financial assistance until the student has regained satisfactry standing. The mere passage f time will nt nrmally allw a student t regain financial aid eligibility. Students placed n financial aid prbatin may appeal that decisin by prviding a dcumented change in their academic recrd that enables them t meet the academic criteria fr satisfactry academic prgress r dcumented extenuating circumstances. Appeals will be reviewed by the Law Financial Aid Office, the Directr f their LL.M. prgram, the Assciate Dean f Students, the Academic Standards Cmmittee r the Prgram Cmmittee, as apprpriate. All appeals may nt be reviewed by all parties, but nly thse individuals necessary t cnfirm a student s satisfactry academic prgress. A student may appeal the determinatin f a lack f Satisfactry Academic Prgress with the Directr r Assciate/Assistant Directr f their LL.M. prgram. Withdrawal and Leaves f Absence Under rdinary circumstances, a student wh takes a leave f absence will nt jepardize their financial aid eligibility. Students wh are facing persnal difficulties may benefit frm a leave f absence if remaining enrlled wuld harm their academic standing. Withdrawal in gd standing. Withdrawal in gd standing becmes effective nly upn submissin f an fficial withdrawal frm t their LL.M. prgram, whatever the reasn fr withdrawal, and whether r nt the student seeks leave t return. N student may withdraw in gd standing until all bligatins t the University have been paid. Leaves f absence. A student seeking a temprary interruptin f study may request a leave f absence. In additin t any special cnditins impsed, the fllwing rules apply t all leaves. Length. Leaves rdinarily will nt be granted fr perids lnger than ne semester. Extensin. A student seeking t extend a leave must petitin their LL.M. prgram befre the leave has expired. The ttal length f a leave may nt exceed tw cnsecutive semesters. Return. A student returning frm a leave must infrm their LL.M. prgram by the date specified by their LL.M. prgram. A student failing t give such ntice may nt return fr that semester withut the prgram s permissin. A student wh takes a leave f absence is still expected t cmplete the prgram within the maximum timeframe fr their prgram f study.
Students wh withdrew withut leave t return r whse leave has expired. Such students must petitin their LL.M. prgram fr readmissin t the Schl. LL.M. in Taxatin All students in the LL.M. in Taxatin prgram must fulfill the fllwing requirements: Cmplete with a passing grade a minimum f 24 credits in the Graduate Tax Prgram curriculum (r elsewhere if apprved). Earn a final average f at least 3.0 with n mre than ne grade f D (1.0). Receive nt mre than ne grade belw C-minus in elective curses. Achieve a cumulative grade pint average f 2.5 r better after cmpletin f 12 credits. Cmplete the five required curses unless excused by the Graduate Tax Prgram directr. Satisfy the GTP tax ethics requirement either by cmpleting TX914 ( Standards and Respnsibilities in Tax Practice ) r by participating in the GTP Tax Ethics Prgram. Cmplete each curse fr which he r she is registered, including any additinal curses beynd the required 24 credits, unless the curse has been drpped. A student, wh is drpped frm the Graduate Tax Prgram fr failure t fulfill the degree requirements r therwise, may petitin the Graduate Tax Prgram Cmmittee fr reinstatement. A full-time student must cmplete the Degree Requirements in tw cnsecutive academic semesters. A part-time student must cmplete the Degree Requirements in nt mre than eight cnsecutive semesters. With the written apprval f the Prgram Directr, a student may change his r her status frm full-time t part-time r the cnverse. Seven-Semester and Six-Semester J.D. /LL.M. in Taxatin Thrugh the Seven-Semester prgram, the Schl f Law ffers qualified Bstn University J.D. candidates the pprtunity t earn an LL.M. in Taxatin with nly ne semester f full time pst-j.d. study. BU Law J.D. students are given advanced standing tward the LL.M. degree fr 12 credits in qualified tax curses taken as a part f the J.D. curse f study. (Credit will nt be given tward the LL.M. degree fr Graduate Tax Prgram curses which are in whle r in part repetitive f curses taken in the J.D. curriculum.) Students in the six-semester prgram wh cmplete all requirements f the LL.M. prgram will be awarded the LL.M. in Taxatin degree in additin t the J.D. degree upn graduatin. Thse wh d nt meet the LL.M. degree requirements, but therwise meet the J.D. requirements, will receive the J.D. but nt als the LL.M. A student wh des nt meet the J.D. degree requirements will nt be awarded the LL.M. degree, even if he r she has met the requirements fr the LL.M. degree. Cmplete the basic Federal Incme Taxatin curse (fr which credit tward the LL.M. degree is nt given) and 12 r mre additinal credits f qualified tax curses (12 f which may be credited tward bth the LL.M. and the J.D. degree prgrams.) These latter curses must include at least ne crprate tax curse and at least ne partnership tax curse. Receive grades f B (3.0) r better in the abve referenced curses. Cmplete and achieve a passing grade in all required curses. All students must take Intrductin t American Law and a Legal Research and Writing seminar (unless waived with the Directr s permissin) and participate in a graduate cllquium, Tpics in American Law. Obtain a final weighted cumulative average f at least C+ (2.3) fr all curses (including seminars) taken. Receive nt mre than ne grade f C-(1.7), D (1.0) r F (0.0) in elective classes. Any student wh at the end f the year, has failed t satisfy the requirements fr the LL.M. degree must petitin the Directr with a specific prpsal fr cmpleting utstanding requirements. The Directr shall reprt the matter t the Academic Standards Cmmittee, alng with a recmmendatin. The Cmmittee shall, in turn, reprt the matter t the Faculty with its recmmendatin. The Faculty may then direct either that the student be drpped frm the Prgram r, where apprpriate, that the student cmplete specified wrk t satisfy degree requirements. Unless the Directr f the Office f Freign Prgrams grants a waiver in a particular case, each student must cmplete all requirements in the same academic year that he/she begins the LL.M. in American Law Prgram.
