This talk and demonstration by RHS staff will teach you the theory behind pruning shrubs at this time of year along with vital pruning principles which will allow your plants to be at their best for the year ahead. General maintenance and pruning shrubs and climbers such as Buddleja, Wisteria and Cornus (dogwood) will be covered, as well as renovative pruning for overgrown shrubs. This session will involve walking outdoors and practical demonstrations, so please come prepared with suitable footwear and clothing. Horticulture Greenhouses for Beginners Saturday 27 February 10am to 1pm Whether you have recently acquired or are thinking of acquiring a greenhouse, or would simply like guidance and ideas on how to get started, this illustrated talk and practical demonstration by Wisley s Glasshouse Specialist Team will set you on the right track. The session will cover different types of greenhouses to suit your needs, useful gizmos and gadgets, setting up the greenhouse for spring, raising plants, growing early crops under protection and growing spring-flowering plants. This full-day course with renowned plantsman Noel Kingsbury seeks to explore the plants that look good in winter as a springboard to understanding the annual growth cycle and how gardeners can make the most of it. This full-day course will go through the basics of propagation and show you the best techniques to produce the most successful results. It will include a demonstration of taking cuttings and sowing seeds with opportunities to try the activities and take the results home for further nurturing. There will also be a guided tour around the propagation glasshouses at Wisley where thousands of plants are raised for the garden every year. This day will focus on the vegetables that can be grown during spring and how to sow and plant them. This time of year is often a lean time for harvesting so discussions will also cover crops to plant in your garden this year for a harvest next spring. A range of practical jobs such as soil preparation, seed sowing techniques and intercropping will be covered. This is a practical day and attendees will have the chance to practise skills they are shown, so please come prepared with suitable footwear, outdoor clothes and gardening gloves. Facilities: Hillside Events Centre and the Clore Learning Centre are both fitted with a hearing loop and have disabled access toilets. Carers and translators: Attendants cannot be provided, but one companion is admitted free of charge per person whose disability or situation necessitates a carer. If companions wish to be included in refreshments during the course please state this and pay for refreshments at the time of booking. Admission: Admission to RHS Garden Wisley is included in the price of the course ticket. Weather: Many of our courses include outdoor activities. Please ensure that you dress appropriately for the weather with suitable footwear. Parking: Car parking is free.
