It also provides a foundation f students in Ornamental Hticulture Lscape Architecture. It affds local hticulturists wking professionals the means to upgrade their skills knowledge. Opptunities to obtain valuable experience are provided in the greenhouse/garden facility by wking to enhance campus lscapes. DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES The college offers two A.S. Degrees, two Certificates of Achievement, seven Skills Certificates in Hticulture. Students may obtain an A.S. Degree in General Crop Production Lscape Hticulture. Students may earn only one A.S. HORT 1B Basic Hticulture: Crop Production 4 units; 3 hours Lecture, 3 hours Labaty Surveys the production of namental lscape plants to gain a wking knowledge of how light, temperature, water, fertilizers, soilless media interact in a controlled environment. Also covers pest management propagation of selected namentals. HORT 2 Soil Science Management 4 units; 3 hours Lecture, 3 hours Labaty Examines physical, chemical, biological composition of soils, local soil fmations, methods of soil sampling testing, fertilizer liming techniques, production use of ganic chemical fertilizers, green manures, relationship between soils human culture. Includes the use testing of soils f production plus septic gray water systems. Transfer Credit: Transfers to CSU; UC. HORT 52 Greenhouse Design Operation 3 units; 3 hours Lecture Presents the design management of commercial residental greenhouses including site analysis, greenhouse styles, glazing, circulation, cooling, venting, heating systems, control systems. This class also covers general growing conditions of plants in a controlled environment. The business of nurseries greenhouses is also covered briefly. 3

4 HORT 54 Business Aspects of Hticulture 4 units; 3 hours Lecture, 3 hours Labaty Focuses on starting managing hticultural businesses, including licenses required, developing a business plan, sales, marketing, computer invoicing, recd keeping legal requirements of employers. Discusses myriad of employment opptunities, especially niche markets. Labs include field trips retail/inventy training f departmental plant sales. HORT 58 Irrigation Systems Design Management 3 units; 3 hours Lecture, 1 hour Labaty Introduces the fundamentals of agricultural, residential, commercial lscape irrigation systems design, installation, maintenance with an emphasis on the efficient use of irrigation water in the semi-arid Central Coast climate. HORT 62 Fall Plant Materials Design 3 units; 2 hours Lecture, 3 hours Labaty Covers the identification of the common plants used in local lscapes including native introduced trees, shrubs, groundcovers, vines. Also covers the uses of plants in the lscape, Califnia natives firescaping, histy of gardens, selecting groundcovers, plant selection software, planting design. HORT 63 Spring Plant Materials Design 3 units; 2 hours Lecture, 3 hours Labaty Covers the identification of the plants used in Califnia lscapes including namental grasses, perennials, trees, shrubs. Also covers selecting proper plants f lscape needs including flowering trees, plants f hedges, screens espaliers. HORT 65 Lscape Design Graphics 2 units; 1 hour Lecture, 3 hours Labaty Introduces graphic techniques of lscape design using various media to create base plans, plan views, elevation drawings. HORT 66 Lscape Design: They Process 3 units; 2 hours Lecture, 3 hours Labaty Presents principles of lscape design they process including graphics, problem solving, presentation skills through residential site analysis, program development, case studies, client interaction, site measurement. HORT 70 Organic Agriculture 3 units; 3 hours Lecture, 1 hour Labaty Introduces ganic agriculture with an emphasis on ganic food production a practical understing of the philosophy, principles, practices of ganic crops. HORT 71 Organic Food Production 1 4 units; 3 hours Lecture, 3 hours Labaty Prerequisite: HORT 70 equivalent experience. Continues the they practices of good management begun in HORT 70 emphasizing springtime, commercial scale, local area, ganic vegetable, fruit, flower crops. Emphasizes the scientific, economic, social basis f good management practices. Designed primarily f students planning a management career in ganic hticulture. HORT 72 Organic Food Production 2 1 unit; 0.5 hour Lecture, 1.5 hours Labaty Prerequisite: HORT 71 equivalent experience. 5 HORT 100A Plant Propagation 1-3 units; 3-9 hours Labaty Presents techniques in plant propagation including seed collection, hling, sowing as well as producing plants from cuttings, layering, leaf pieces, division, grafting. Includes equipment facilities commonly used in nursery greenhouse production, appropriate chemicals hmones, growing mediums fertilizers appropriate f propagation, sanitation procedures, propagation scheduling, lining out potting up. HORT 125 Hydroponic Substrate Production 3 units; 2 hours Lecture, 3 hours Labaty Introduces concepts practices of growing crops hydroponically with substrates including set up, nutrient solution preparation, lighting needs, pest control. HORT 150 Pest Management 4 units; 3 hours Lecture, 3 hours Labaty Introduces the concepts practices of integrated pest management emphasizing identification of insects, vertebrates, diseases, weeds in managed lscapes, crops, nurseries, greenhouses on the Central Coast. Covers pesticide use safety the techniques of integrated pest management including: biological control, resistant varieties, cultural controls, mixed cropping. HORT 160B Edible Lscaping 3 units; 3 hours Lecture Provides an introduction to designing, growing, harvesting edible plants in the lscape with a focus on fruits vegetables as well as food issues highlighting the value of whole food diets using documentary films. HORT 162A-Z Current Topics in Hticulture units; hours Lecture hours Labaty Presents selected topics in hticulture not covered by regular catalog offerings. Each special topic course will be announced, described, given its own title letter designation in the Schedule of Classes. HORT 164 Califnia Native Plants & Plant Communities 2 units; 1 hour Lecture, 3 hours Labaty Covers the identification of native plants their best uses in the developed lscape, includes discussion of the diverse native plant communities of Califnia. HORT 172 Arbiculture 3 units; 2 hours Lecture, 3 hours Labaty Introduces the care management of trees in the lscape providing preparation f the International Society of Arbiculture (ISA) certification exam covers the selection, training, protecting, fertilizing, the basics of pruning. Soil, water nutrient management, plant biology will be discussed as well as the operation of a tree maintenance business.trees common to the ISA exam will be covered. HORT 173 Lscape Pruning 1 unit; 0.75 hours Lecture, 1.5 hours Labaty Provides hs-on experience using pruning equipment presents general specific pruning techniques of common plants in the lscape including namental trees, shrubs vines, roses, fruit trees. Discusses the advantages disadvantages of winter versus summer pruning the selection of plants f special pruning techniques such as topiary, hedging, winter interest blooming. HORT 175 Sustainable Lscaping 4 units; 3 hours Lecture, 3 hours Labaty Encompasses sustainable lscaping theies practices including designing, installing maintaining ecologically sound lscapes through renovating existing gardens with living walls, green roofs, permeable hardscapes rain water catchment systems, appropriate plant selection, water conservation irrigation. HORT 176 Permaculture Design 3 units; 2 hours Lecture, 3 hours Labaty Introduces principles practices of permaculture design though collabation on real-wld projects with a focus towards repairing, resting, regenerating human ecosystems. 5
