The following instructions are for Sony, Kobo, Pandigital, Literati and Nook ereaders, as well as for PC and Mac computers. Kobo Vox, ipad, iphone and Android users can use the free Overdrive Media Console application from itunes or Android Marketplace to manage their ebook and Audiobook downloads (but will still need to register for an Adobe ID). Go to http://www.overdrive.com/software/omc/ to download the Overdrive Media Console. The Amazon Kindle does not currently support ebook lending from public libraries. For additional information on ebooks and compatible devices, please visit: http://rplebooks.pbworks.com Step 1: Install and Activate Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) Adobe ebooks from the Library are protected with Adobe Digital Rights Management (DRM). In order to read an Adobe ebook on your computer or transfer it to most ereaders, you will first need to install ADE on your PC or Mac. ADE is free software that manages your library ebook downloads and protects the copyrights of the authors and publishers. From the web site: www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/ click on the button that says Install. After installation, the Setup Assistant will guide you through the activation process. 1
Part of the activation process involves registering your Adobe ID with Adobe Digital Editions. If you don t already have an Adobe ID, click on the link to get an Adobe ID online. Click on Create an Adobe Account, fill out the form and click on Continue at the bottom of the page. After creating your Adobe Account, return to the Setup Assistant to enter your Adobe ID and password. Make sure Authorize Computer is selected and click on Activate You can activate up to six computers with the same Adobe ID. Note: Should you ever need to deactivate a computer, you can do so by holding down Control + Shift + D. 2
Step 2: Checkout and Download an Adobe ebook from Overdrive Go to the Overdrive homepage www.library2go.sk.ca and click Sign In. Select Regina Public Library from the drop down menu and follow the prompts to complete the sign in process. Click on the link for Regina Public Library users. 3
Enter your RPL card number and PIN to Login. Once you ve signed in, you ll be taken to the library2go account page, where you can use the search function of the catalogue to find an available Adobe ebook. To check out an available Adobe ebook, click Add to Cart. 4
Click Proceed to Checkout. Complete the process by clicking the Confirm check out button. Click on the Download button below the ebook cover. 5
Click on the Open button. The file should automatically download and open in Adobe Digital Editions Reading View. Step 3: Transfer Your Adobe ebook to a Compatible ereader If you use a Sony ereader, you will need to install the ebook Library software from http://ebookstore.sony.com/download so ADE will recognize your device. If you use the non-wireless Kobo device, make sure that when you plug in your device, you choose the option Manage Library on the device s screen to transfer books from ADE. Otherwise, ADE will not recognize your Kobo. Plug your ereader into your computer and wait a few moments for the device to be recognized by the computer. Once your device is connected to the computer, open Adobe Digital Editions software. This initial sequence is very important. 6
The first time you open up Adobe Digital Editions with your device already connected, ADE will prompt you to Authorize your Device with your Adobe ID After your device has been authorized, go to Library View by clicking the bookshelf icon in the top left corner of the screen. Your device should appear as a bookshelf in Library View. To transfer an ebook to your device, click on a title and drag it to your device s bookshelf with your mouse: 7
After copying your ebook to your ereader, remember to safely eject your device from the computer and unplug. Enjoy your free ebook! Returning Your ebook Early To return a borrowed ebook to Overdrive before it is due, follow these steps: Open Adobe Digital Editions and Select the Library View icon in the upper left corner of the screen. 8
Under the Bookshelves heading, select Borrowed. Click on the Item Options arrow in the upper left corner of the selected ebook. Select Return Borrowed Item from the Item Options list. 9
Click Return to verify that you want to return the title. The borrowed ebook will disappear from your Adobe Digital Editions Library, and you are ready to borrow a new title! 10
