2 Wise Campus Center: Norwich University Opportunity Summary: The Nursing Department of Norwich University is seeking applicants for tenure track faculty positions at the assistant/associate/full professor level for the specializations of Maternal Nursing and Mental Health Nursing. Successful candidates will teach undergraduate courses in the classroom and clinical settings, and participate in research or scholarly activity in pedagogy or in their area of clinical specialization. Additional responsibilities include advising students, integrating simulation laboratory learning into the classroom, and university service. The Norwich University Nursing Department is committed to innovation in nursing education. Supported by new simulation laboratories, classrooms and learning laboratories, the Nursing Department creates an environment that provides many opportunities for faculty to grow professionally. Clinical affiliations at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and University of Vermont s Fletcher Allen Medical Center enable faculty and students access to excellent clinical resources. University-wide faculty development resources foster individual professional growth.

3 Norwich University Nursing Program Background and Culture The President and Trustees strongly support the development of the Nursing program. Very recently, an investment of over $1Million was made for state of the art teaching equipment and specialized learning suite. The program is strategic to the ongoing growth and development of Norwich University. With demand for qualified graduates of undergraduate nursing schools far out stripping the ability of universities to supply them, Norwich University is particularly well prepared to continue its strong support for its nursing instruction initiatives. In the past five years nursing student enrollment capacity has been aproximately180 BSN students annually. Because of the unique status of Norwich University, one of the Nation s oldest and highly respected private military colleges the University consistently builds ever closer relationships with the US military for the purpose of graduating students who will receive commissions and enjoy a military career. In accordance with the tradition of Norwich University all tenure track faculty are required to wear the uniform of the Vermont Militia. The Norwich University Nursing Program functions in a new state of the art facility in the Science Building. A dynamic young and growing program in its second decade, the University is now seeking faculty who are committed to excellence and excel in teaching and mentoring. Norwich nursing students have opportunities to practice nursing in a wide array of institutional settings including 2 academic medical centers, several critical access rural hospitals, a VA hospital and a variety of community settings. The nursing student enrollment includes approximately 20% ROTC students and 80% civilians. Technological applications are at the forefront of the classroom and clinical educational initiatives. Students use multiple technological applications in the classroom and clinical environments including hand held PDAs or smart phone applications for accessing clinical information. The hospital simulation lab includes bedside computers and an electronic medical record. This facility includes: a nursing student study area with 12 study stations 9 offices for faculty and administrative staff a human patient simulation lab suite complete with a control room, closed circuit camera transmission to the 2 hospital simulation rooms and classrooms and an advanced audio system a hospital simulation lab complete with 6 adult mid-level human patient simulator stations as well as infant and child simulators a fully equipped health assessment lab

4 Nursing Program Director, Valerie McCarthy with Laerdal Sim Man The vision for the program is to provide an undergraduate nursing education program that inspires excellence and innovation in the learning community of faculty and students. Program leadership boasts a curriculum that inspires students to excellence in practice and scholarship. ROTC nursing students have the opportunity to work at the top Army, Navy hospitals here in the United States and at facilities around the world during their summer internships. We are looking forward to increasing the number of international internships and clinical placements in the future as well as including more options for degree programs in nursing. Graduates of the program are actively serving in the US military as registered nurses in military hospitals both stateside and throughout the world. Civilian graduates are currently working at many of the top hospitals regionally and in the United States. In the most recent year the pass rate for students taking the National Council of Licensure Examination (NCLEX) was 96%. The MSN offering was qualified by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for the first time in December 2008. Full 5 year approval. The BSN will be site visited by CCNE for first time in October 2011; it is presently accredited by the National League for Nursing.

5 Uniform teaching load throughout the University is at 12 credits per semester. Service and research is above teaching load. There are releases that faculty may apply for as well as faculty development grants to support scholarship and teaching. Teaching is the primary institutional focus at Norwich and the basis for promotion and tenure. Our program has 8 tenure line positions in the BSN at present. Lectures and clinical adjuncts augment the full time tenure line faculty resources. Position Requirements: In accordance with the tradition of Norwich University all tenure track faculty are required to wear the uniform of the Vermont Militia. Earned doctorate in nursing or a closely related field, preferred. A master s degree in a clinical area of nursing and specialty clinical nursing skills required. Minimum of one year of full time teaching experience. Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience. Commitment to excellence in teaching and learning as evidenced by a presentation during the campus visit and interview. Commitment to teaching, service and scholarship consistent with the School priorities and mission of the University. Technological literacy and commitment to integrate technology in teaching and scholarship. Active Vermont Registered Professional Nurse license by August 1, 2012. Commitment to recruiting, advising, retaining and mentoring qualified students. If the candidate does not already possess a doctoral degree, clear intention to enroll in doctoral education is required for all applicants seeking a tenure track position. Familiarity with a variety of learning styles and ability to tailor/ personalize instruction will be viewed as a definite plus. Candidates must have U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status. All Candidates must be eligible for RN licensure in Vermont. Three professional letters of recommendation are required.

Norwich enrolls more than 3,300 students in undergraduate and graduate programs, with approximately 1,250 in a Corps of Cadets, 900 civilian undergraduate students, and more than 1,400 graduate students. The university offers many graduate academic and professional degree on-line programs serving students around the world. The programs are an important revenue stream for the University. The faculty is an intellectually and politically diverse group. A high percentage of the faculty does not have military service background but honors the traditions of Norwich by wearing a military uniform on campus.

10 LOCATION For a person who revels in natural beauty, Vermont s Green Mountains are clearly among the most spectacular and unspoiled in the United States. Its close proximity to Boston and Montreal offers easy access to a wealth of educational and cultural activities offering a blend of sophistication with authentic New England charm. Montpelier, the state capital, is within 12 miles of campus and the city of Burlington, considered among the top 5 most livable cities in the United States, is less than an hour away. The university s location in central Vermont offers many recreational opportunities including some of the best skiing, mountain biking and fishing in the country. The cost of housing in the Northfield area ranges from $200-300,000 for comfortable homes with acreage; taxes are about $2,000/100K of valuation. Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, ranked among the nation's top hospitals, is about an hour from Northfield.
