POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION: ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF NURSING Procedural Areas RESPONSIBLE TO: HOURS OF DUTY: SALARY: Director Nursing & Clinical Services Full Time Negotiable but based on Level 4, Nurses (ANF - South Australian Private Sector) Award 2003. PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL: Appraisal 6 months after commencement thereafter annual performance review SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES St Andrew s Hospital goal is to provide service excellence and quality care to its patients. The position of Associate Director of Nursing (ADON) supports this goal by: Providing support as a direct line Manager to Clinical Managers to ensure the effective management of available resources (financial, material and human) Using their clinical knowledge and experience to provide leadership and direction in the areas of responsibility in the Nursing Division Utilises the philosophy, objectives, policies, procedures and programmes of the Nursing Division as a foundation to plan, implement, control and evaluate methods and systems which support the safe, effective and efficient delivery of patient care and the efficient management of resources within the allocated budget. Promotes and maintains co-operative relationships with medical, administrative, allied health professional and ancillary staff. Develops and fosters productive working relationships with a wide range of staff and stakeholders. As part of the Nursing Executive team, assists with the development and achievement of the Hospitals strategic and operational plan. Responsible for Special Projects as designated by the Director Nursing & Clinical Services (DNCS) this will include research, investigation and outcome implementation. Responsible for the Risk Management Plan in conjunction for areas of control. Any other relevant duties as required by the DNCS. 2 Is a valuable member to the Nursing Division team demonstrated by: Providing leadership and support of St Andrew s philosophy, mission and values. Participating in the delivery strategic and operational goals for the Hospital. Developing programs consistent with the Hospital s objectives both short and long term. Participates on a range of organisation and external Committees associated with the management of St Andrew s Hospital as directed by the DNCS and CEO. Ensures adherence to legislation, reporting, WHS, EEO, national standards and local policies and procedures. Prepares and presents submissions to the DNCS, and other committees as directed. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES CLINICAL LEADERSHIP AND EXPERTISE Responsible for operational and strategic management of the following areas: - Theatre - Anaesthetics and Recovery - Angiography - Day Procedure Suite - CSSD (through CM Theatre) - Infection Control - Preadmission Clinic - Clinical Placement Officer - Nursing Hours - Special Projects Integrates contemporary information and research evidence with personal knowledge and experience to support executive level decision making. Participates in clinical service planning. In consultation with the DNCS initiates and oversees innovations, systemic change processes, and coordination of responses to services needs within span of control. Assists in the development of organisational philosophies, policies and procedures for the delivery of safe patient care. Assists DNCS in ensuring that policies, standards and practices within the Nursing Division are in compliance with legal, industrial and professional requirements. Acts as a role model and resource person for clinical expertise within areas of control. Responsible for any designated Special Projects, to encompass research, outcomes and implementation.

3 HUMAN, FINANCIAL AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT For the designated area of responsibility, the ADON Participates in the interview and selection of nursing personnel. Oversees the staff establishment for the areas of responsibility and ensures the daily staffing of these areas has appropriate skills and is in accordance with the budget. Oversees the training and development program for staff in the areas of responsibility to ensure staff competence. Ensures that the out of hours service is appropriate. Keeps self abreast of visiting medical officer requirements and ensures that equipment is available and maintained. Collaborates with the DNCS with setting the operating budget. Manages the material resources (consumables/equipment) for the all areas within scope of control within a budgeted framework. Promotes cost effective utilisation of resources Assists in the establishment and maintenance of a prioritised capital register. Overseas and supports the Clinical Managers to ensure trialing and purchasing of appropriate equipment within the Procedural areas is in accordance with hospital policies Identifies emerging technologies and areas of specialty that would provide potential positive impact to the organisation. Promotes cost awareness, containment and counteraction of resources. Is responsible for helping to identify risks; prioritising risks and providing suggestions as to possible sanctions to risks to minimise exposure to hospital. COMMUNICATION Displays an advanced level of effective communication, problem solving, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills. Complies with the hospital s Code of Communication, and communicates the requirement of compliance to staff and others. Utilises appropriate communication channels to keep self and staff abreast of local and hospital wide issues. Contributes to a work environment that encourages positive staff morale, team cohesiveness, motivation and commitment. RISK MANAGEMENT Participates in risk reduction projects as required.

4 Is responsible for helping to identify risks; prioritising risks and providing expert advice as to possible solutions to risks to minimise exposure for the hospital. Conducts incident investigation from area of control including root cause analysis, reports findings to the Risk & Quality Committee and recommends risk reduction strategies of areas of control. WORK HEALTH & SAFETY (WHS) Complies with all hospital policies and procedures relating to Work Health and Safety. Promotes Work Health & Safety policies and procedures to staff and acts on noncompliance. Responds to/reports any health and safety matter raised by any employee. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Maintains a professional practise portfolio containing professional development evidence commensurate with the level of autonomy, and authority expected of the role. Undertakes action research to identify deficiencies or to improve nursing management and patient care practices. 6 SELECTION CRITERIA ESSENTIAL 1. Registered as a General Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and holds a current Practising Certificate. 2. Holds a relevant post graduate tertiary qualification or making substantial progress towards this requirement. 3. Has extensive recent experience in acute general & procedural nursing, preferably in key specialties 4. The applicant should be able to demonstrate: Knowledge and application of human and material resource management.
