ALM CHASSIS and CHASSIS ACCESSORIES ALM 1623 Card Nest (a.k.a. MK III +Card Nest)* The ALM 1623 Card Nest provides housing for ALM 3239 central site modems as well as the ALM MPIV Leased Line modem. Each Card Nest is designed to fit into a standard 19-inch rack and can house up to 16 modems or 8 ALM MPIVs. The installed modems can be connected to either dial-up or leased lines and can be set for different data rates. Includes: Card Nest, power supply, power supply mounting plate, DTE-to-RJ45 cable p/n 5956-173Y, 5956-182E-10 Std. EIA Cable, and a manual. Optional Cables which must be ordered separately, if needed, are... The Personal Controller: Central Site Feature Solution ENTER 1 2 3 RACAL CENTRAL SITE CONTROLLER The ALM 3239CS modems allow you to send data over dial-up lines at faster speeds than ever before. This generation of high-speed advanced dial modems for the ALM 1623 (MKIII+) provide a clear benefit for increased reliability, faster response times and lower line costs which is essential in today's high volume applications. Until now, these modems had to be configured with a DTE at the installation location. The Personal Controller allows for configuration and diagnostics of the modems in the chassis without the need of a DTE. 1. PRODUCT OVERVIEW The Personal Controller for the ALM 1623 (MKIII+) Chassis, is a versatile tool that can be utilized by both, System Operator and Field Service Personnel. The Personal Controller acts as a modem front panel to let you: Configure modems Assign unique unit and group addresses to remote standalone modems Scan any central site modem in up to 16 card cages to determine which are active Copy modem configurations from one modem to another Perform seven different test functions on any modem in the network Reset any modem The Personal Controller can control up to 256 ALM 3239 Central Site modems (16 interconnected ALM 1623 (MKIII+) chassis with up to 16 modems in each cage), as well as remote standalone modems. All of this control is available from a single point connection. In addition to the usual LCD Flow chart menus that are typical of the ALM 3239, the Personal Controller comes with its own Setup menu that lets you access all of its available options. This menu allows for the following options: Selecting a modem - There are two ways of doing this: 1. Select a modem by its group and unit address 2. Select a modem from a card cage by its slot number Scanning modems - Use the scan mode to find which units in the card cage are active. Copying modem configurations - With the copy option, you can copy the configuration from one modem to any or all modems in the same card cage. Diagnostics - The Personal Controller is capable of performing a variety of tests on one or all modems in a selected card cage. The following tests are available: 1. Analog loopback 2. Analog loopback self test 3. Analog loopback self-test with errors 4. Digital loopback 5. Remote digital loopback 6. LEASED LINE MODEMS Alpha IV/ALM MPIV Products Achieve Optimum Leased Line Performance with ALPHA IV/ALPHA IV/ALM MPIV Modems The ALPHA IV/ALM Multiport (MP) IV* series modems are designed to meet the demanding leased line network requirements of large financial companies and information providers. The ALPHA IV/ALM MPIV transmits data at speeds up to 28.8 Kbps, optimizing network performance and reducing response times. It can operate on existing multidrop networks or on point-to-point resilient lines. The versatile ALPHA IV/ALM MPIV supports a wide array of modulation schemes, including V.34, V.29, and V.33, ensuring compatibility with many other leased and dial line modems. The modem comes with a full complement of standard features, including: automatic dial backup, remote unit control, remote software downloading, and network management. * The ALM MPIV units are standard Alpha IV units except they are marketed under the ALM brand name for the Americas Region and in some territories in the Asia Pacific Region. It is known as the Alpha IV modems in the EMEA region. Centralized Network Management For networks requiring comprehensive management, testing, and control features, the ALPHA IV/ALM MPIV can operate with the Milgo CMS 400 network management system. The CMS 400 provides sophisticated database management, performance analysis, fault isolation, and network restoral abilities. Both local and remote modems can be controlled from a central PC workstation. The CMS 400 manages remote modems without interrupting data transmission. Predefined Configuration Profiles To simplify installation, the ALPHA IV/ALM MPIV provides 16 switch-selectable configuration profiles that set the modem for typical applications. If you need to customize the configuration, an extensive range of configurable parameters can be modified via the control port, front panel, or CMS network management system. Remote Unit Control Remote unit control enables you to control unattended remote ALPHA IV/ALM MPIV modems (even in tail circuits) from the local modem s front panel or control port. Central Site and Standalone Models Designed for your central locations, the central site model is a high-density card that is housed in the MKIII/ALM1623 card nest. Up to 16 Singleport or 8 Multiport modems can be housed in a single nest. You can daisy-chain up to five card nests in one 6-foot rack. Three power options are available with the MKIII/ALM1623 card nest: 115 VAC, 230 VAC, and -48 VDC. Ideal for remote site applications, the standalone model comes in a sturdy, compact case. It is available with either a 115 or 230 VAC power supply. Software Downloading for Easy Remote Upgrades The ALPHA IV/ALM MPIV supports software downloading, allowing easy remote upgrades. The modem can be upgraded with new features through a PSTN or leased line connection. This feature saves time by eliminating time consuming visits to multiple remote locations. High-speed local upgrade via the control port is also available. Asynchronous/Synchronous Conversion Multiport ALPHA IV/ALM MPIV modems can be set to operate with asynchronous or synchronous terminals on a port-by-port basis. When set for asynchronous operation, the modem converts the data into synchronous format using the method specified in ITU-T V.14. The converter protects against data loss by compensating for small data rate differences between the terminal and modem. Decrease Downtime with Automatic Dial Backup If the leased lines go down in a point-to-point network, the ALPHA IV/ALM MPIV restores communication by routing data to dial backup lines. Dial backup connections can be established automatically (in response to user-selectable criteria), manually (by entering a front panel command), or in response to network management system commands. backup lines, the modem can be set to periodically test the performance of the leased lines. Should those lines resume satisfactory performance, the ALPHA IV/ALM MPIV switches communication back automatically. Applications Singleport Model The Singleport model is for use in both point-to-point and multidrop applications. It supports line speeds up to 28,800 bps (V.34) for point to point connections. For multidrop applications, it supports V.29 30 ms Fast Poll, V.33 35 ms Fast Poll, and 19,200/9600 bps asymmetric operation. The asymmetric configuration provides an effective combination of modulations, which accelerates the transmission of large volumes of data from the host, while maintaining a Fast Poll response time at the remote drop. Minimize Line Costs with Multiport Model The Multiport model allows up to four terminals to transmit data over a single telephone line. This is done through time division multiplexing (TDM), port sharing, or a combination of the two. Since dial up is point-to-point, there is no single line that will backup an entire multidrop. The usual way to overcome this is to have spare modems at the central site which provide dial backup for each of the drops of a multidrop. These spare modems need not provide for 100% backup as the chance of several multidrop lines failing at the same time is minimal. Hence, modems for dialup can be shared between several multidrop lines. In the above scenario, when a multidrop fails, we would end up with a point-to-point configuration. The issue would now be to tie in the front end processors to the dial up modems. One approach is to have the spare dial up modems port shared (using a port sharing/modem sharing device) on to the same port as the main multidrop line. This works well in that no reconfiguration of the FEP is required when going to DBU. If only part of the multidrop fails, not all drops need to be backed up. It does not allow easy sharing of the spare dialup modems between multidrop lines without some sort of A/B switching or patching. Another approach would be to put all the dial up modems on to a port-sharing device attached to a spare FEP port which is then configured appropriately according to which multidrop line is being backed up. This allows easy sharing of dial up only modems between multidrop lines. In a Multiport Multidrop application with dial backup, this only works in very limited applications. It is not recommended that we promote this functionality. Multiports can be used at remote sites in a single protocol environment in modemsharing mode. Network Management ALPHA IV/ALM MPIV is supported by CMS 400 leased line manager as with all other products which support the Miolgo Solutions T7 management protocol. The CMS 400 management network can be connected to the control port of any ALPHA IV/ALM MPIV modem via suitable switches and demultiplexers. However, in order to control remote units, a modulation scheme having a secondary channel (over which CMS 400 control signals are passed) is required. The management data can be transmitted between modems either via the primary channel (disruptive) or via a secondary channel (non disruptive), availability and speed of the secondary channel is however dependent upon the modulation. Note that in PSTN mode, the modem must be online to enable any communication to take place. The Remote modem may be connected to another (Remote) Central modem via its control port and other CMS 400 managed products.
