Project Understanding Hewn is a bakery that makes you feel good. With homemade recipes, and a different menu each day, Hewn bakes delicious foods that warm the heart. To launch Hewn, we understand that you wish to create a logo and website that communicate your heart and soul to your audience, as well as create a place to grow your business through online ordering. Start Somewhere is pleased to prepare this proposal to design the logo and website for Hewn. Our proposal includes the following activities: Logo design Website design Information architecture and site organization Website copy editing Website programming, testing and launch Design and Development Approach We take a thoughtful approach to logo and website design that encompasses more than just look and feel: it includes understanding your audience, site organization and navigation, clear calls to action and user flow, and programming. We propose a four-phased design and development approach. Phase One: Branding, Information Architecture, Wireframing In this phase, we ll work with you to understand the Hewn brand. We ll develop the information architecture of the site, which will provide a guide for website design. We ll spend considerable time on wireframes, which provides a clear path for the design and saves significant time in feedback cycles. Phase Two: Design of Logo and Website, Messaging and Website Copy In this phase, we ll focus on the design of the logo and the website, creating a logo and website that s modern, clean, clear and on trend. We ll evaluate a number of options, honing in on the design that best communicates what Hewn is all about, and gives you a site you ll love. We ll also write website copy that speaks to your key audiences and leverages online best practices. Phase Three: Website Build In this phase, we ll bring the website vision to life. Our programmer will code the site, providing custom code as necessary. We ll input all copy and go through a thorough testing and QA process. 2
Phase Four: Launch Once the site is code compliant and fully tested, we ll launch. Proposed Timeline We understand that Hewn would like to complete the branding project and website quickly. With that in mind, we propose a 12-week timeline to achieve the logo and website design/build. We can go faster or slower based on your goals, budget and internal timeline. Weeks 1-3: Branding process interviews, questionnaire, etc. Logo design Develop website architecture Wireframe major pages and page styles (home page, blog page, etc.) Weeks 4-8: Website design Website copywriting and editing as necessary Weeks 9-10: Website programming and code development, including custom code as necessary Input website copy into the site Weeks 11-12: Website testing, internal and external SEO Setup Website launch 3
Budget The following costs are provided as estimates. These are optional services and can be folded into the project fee, or scoped separately. Email Marketing and Newsletter Regular communication with your audience is key to achieve a number of goals: build loyalty, drive repeat purchase, enable social sharing, etc. We can develop and execute an email communication program that reaches your key audiences, using the systems you already have, or by bringing best-in-class systems to Hewn. From system setup, to newsletter design, to copywriting and editing, to reporting and analytics intelligence, we can help you communicate better with your audience. 5
Appendix: Terms Signature in the Approval section of this agreement confirms that Hewn has retained the services of Start Somewhere, LLC. The agreement commences December 5, 2012 and may be canceled by either party upon 60 days written notice. This agreement authorizes Start Somewhere to design a logo, design and program a website under the Hewn website domain, work with vendors on Hewnʼs behalf, and to counsel Hewn regarding its website and communications. The scope of services provided by Start Somewhere includes: Logo design Website design Information architecture and site organization Website copy editing Website programming, testing and launch The fee for this project is as follows: Item Budget Set up pre-launch site 500 Logo design 1,000 Website design 2,950 Programming, including custom code 2,000 as necessary Website copy editing 800 Online forms integration for online 700 ordering Basic SEO Setup 800 Project Management 1,500 Total Estimate 9,950 Notes on Fees: These costs are provided as estimates. Final costs may change based on changes to scope, approval timeline, etc. Start Somewhere will inform Hewn immediately if estimated costs are likely to be exceeded and ask Hewn to approve any overages in advance. The fees above do not include creation of graphic elements beyond logo (including, but not limited to, photography, images, illustration, video development, etc.) The fees above do not include incremental technologies (i.e. newsletter technology), if necessary. 6
If extra work is required which is outside the scope of the originally agreed upon estimation, that extra work will either be billed at the base hourly rate of $110 per hour or will require an additional estimate which covers the work requested outside the originally defined scope. No project will be started without the explicit approval by Hewn on a submitted estimate. Start Somewhere will be compensated by Hewn as follows: 50% of project Phase One estimated fee upfront upon signing this Agreement Remaining 50% of project Phase One estimated fee and any overages due upon project completion The project timeline is 12 weeks, from December 5, 2012 to February 27, 2012, with a 30-day cushion to account for reasonable delays. Start Somewhere strives to complete all projects in a timely manner as scoped in the project calendar and agreed upon by clients. We understand that delays can happen, however for delays beyond 30 days, there is a surcharge of $1,200 per month beyond the initial timeframe. This is required to secure our team resources for the continuation of the project. Hewn agrees to pay all expenses and fees submitted by Start Somewhere by the designated due date. Payments not received within 30 days of the designated due date will be subject to a penalty equivalent to 10% of the outstanding balance, accruing each subsequent 30 days. Start Somewhere retains the right to use all creative content it creates on behalf of Hewn for its own marketing purposes. Upon project completion to Hewnʼs satisfaction, Hewn agrees to provide a testimonial about Start Somewhere to be used for Start Somewhereʼs own marketing purposes. Any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with this Agreement shall be finally settled by binding arbitration in San Francisco, California under the Commercial Rules of the American Arbitration Association by an arbitrator appointed in accordance with said rules. Judgment on the award rendered by the arbitrator may be entered in any court having jurisdiction thereof. The costs of arbitration, including the fees and expenses of the arbitrator, will be shared equally by the parties. The arbitrator has the right to determine the prevailing party and can award costs, including attorneyʼs fees, to the prevailing party. She s a self-proclaimed foodie who s equally passionate about coffee, bikram yoga and photography, and considers San Francisco, California home regardless of her current IP address. 10
Leah Neaderthal, Chief Marketing Officer As Start Somewhere s Chief Marketing Officer, Leah works with each client to understand their business, then builds creative strategies to help achieve their goals quickly and efficiently. She takes a thoughtful approach to the messaging and marketing for each business, and she s a firm believer that more marketing isn t better. Smart marketing is better. Prior to founding Start Somewhere, Leah spent ten years in marketing for some of the worlds biggest advertising agencies and one scrappy technology company. As a result, she knows what it s like to work slowly with a huge budget, and quickly with a tiny budget (she prefers the latter). In addition to her day jobs, Leah is an avid cyclist and also started The Chainlink, the online community for Chicago cycling.
