Emphasis on continuing development of photographic skills by application of basic technical skills to a variety of areas of photography. As an advanced black and white film photography/darkroom printing course students will learn archival darkroom printing on fiber paper and will be introduced to medium format, large format, and experimental cameras. Basic understanding of traditional darkroom printing/film development is necessary. Students must have enough knowledge from prior coursework to work independently in the darkroom as this course does not have a lab component. Course Objectives: -To understand and employ pre-visualization from exposure to print -To learn how to work on a cohesive photographic series -To learn how to produce quality prints, presenting a portfolio by means of advanced darkroom techniques

Course Requirements: This class will consist of weekly demos and assignments, these will cover recent class discussions. It will be a lecture/lab atmosphere. Thinking creatively is encouraged! You will shoot weekly and we will hold critiques in a professional environment that is constructive. You will be working towards a final portfolio, this work will be what you put into it. I encourage you to participate every chance you get and ask questions! Student safety is of utmost importance! We will work with chemicals to develop film and print, we will go over safety procedures in class, please adhere to these procedures at all times. Jason Lazarus is the Lab Manager. He is in charge of ALL darkroom chemistry. If you have ANY questions/issues with darkroom chemicals immediately email him at jjlazarus@alaska.edu Attendance and Participation: Attendance is REQUIRED for all classes. Poor attendance, tardiness, or poor attitude will affect your participation grade. Three unexcused absences results in an automatic drop in your letter grade. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS ARE ACCEPTED (except illness or emergency) If you have a legitimate reason for missing class make arrangements with me. Please email BEFORE you miss a class. The student remains responsible for all material covered in class during an absence, including knowing when assignments are due.
