HPHS School Year Welcome to Art IV (photography) Dear Students and Parents, This is to be a very exciting year and we are going to have a great time in Art III-IV Photography here at HPHS. We will be expanding on the skills we learned in Art II. We will delve deeper into areas such as light and motion. We will spend some time talking about the differences of traditional black and white methods. The goal of this class is to have students explore different conceptual ideas and relate them to photography. Our learning objectives are: The use of art elements in photography Line Texture Shape Light Motion Perspective Color We will address environmental photography Nature photography Portraiture Lifestyle photography Discuss commercial photography as well as fine art Talk about the differences in digital and traditional methods Explore career options in photography Address presentation formats and mounting Studio Lighting Color Management Alternative Processing Most importantly we are going to learn that photography is a lot of fun and is a great way to express oneself artistically. Assessment and Assignments Two types of grades are given in the art department at Highland Park High School. 5 or more minor grades totaling 40% of the student s grade and 2 or more major grades totaling 60% of the student s grade. Major Grades (60%)

at least 3 Major assignments a six weeks 1 midterm (mid year)/1 final (end of year) practical and critique Major Six Week Projects Portfolio Development You will work in 2-3 week blocks on assignment designated by you, your peers and your instructor. Your goal is to strengthen your portfolio and leave this class with the best possible conceptual work that you can produce. Each three week period we will assess your portfolio and select works to be added, subtracted or reworked. You will then come up with a plan on how to improve your portfolio and work on a written document that explains your concept and what artistic process you plan to go through. Forms will be provided by the instructor. You must hand in the assignment sheet prior to starting your project and the assignment sheet must be followed in order to receive credit. I want you to have a plan and not just fly blind. Minor Grades (40%) 1 written reflection or group discussion will take place every six week period about the work of a professional photographer. Grades are given for your participation in classroom/online discussions and group work. This grade can be affected if you are not on time to class or do not come to class prepared for the day s lesson. One participation grade is given per week Students will be required to turn in contact sheets every week, except for digital work. This grade will either be 100 or 0 (zero if not turned in). This is to let me know that you are shooting and keeping up with assignments. Students will keep a three ring binder that contains all handouts and in class work including quizzes, reviews, monthly calendars, and anything else done in class aside from your actual prints and negatives which will be kept in a separate photo binder. Your three ring binder will be taken up at random for grading so make sure and always have it ready and up to date. FOOD IS NOT PERMITTED IN THE CLASSROOM except on group critique days and prior arrangements will be made to determine who will provide the food. Cafeteria food is not permitted outside of the cafeteria so please do not bring it into my room. Due to the nature of the photography classroom and the chemistry that is used in the darkroom food/drinks should NEVER be taken into the developing room or darkroom. Usage of mobile phones, smart phones and tablet devices will not be permitted in class unless they are being used to edit photographs, download photographs, take photographs or for listening to music during the appropriate times. Other expectations, consequences and rewards are as follow: Expectations Respect other students opinions and ideas

Be on time to class and ready to learn Take care of the Equipment, do not abuse your darkroom privileges. Be productive, you will get as much out of this class as you put into it. Follow guidelines in student handbook Consequences (not necessarily in order) Verbal warning Loss of music privileges Loss of darkroom privileges Loss of outdoor shooting privileges during class Call to parent Fill out action plan and discuss with parent Referral Rewards Music privileges Food during group critique Field trip Fee There is a $50 a semester, per student, fee required for the Art II-IV photo classes. This fee covers chemicals for the lab, lab equipment, equipment maintenance, and also allows us to grow our photography lab and keep it up to date. We thank you at Highland Park High School for supporting the arts and making our school one of the best in the nation. I do not provide photographic paper for use in the darkroom. Students will be responsible for bringing paper to class. Without paper you cannot work and if you cannot work that is going to dramatically effect your participation grade and in the end your overall grade. Paper is roughly $1 for one 8x10 sheet. And a student may use or so sheets in a year. It is cheaper to buy paper in large quantities. If a students buys a pack of 100 sheets it should last them most of the year if they do not waste it or expose it to white light. Listed below are the beginning photo supplies that you will need, excluding your camera and memory card. The package will contain: One archival binder or notebook Three roles of film (buy from Mr. F for $2 a roll) Three archival binder sheets (free from Mr. F) One light safe bag. Turning in Work and Late Work Policy In the beginning it is understandable that your work might be late. It takes a while to become technically proficient at rolling your film and developing your negatives and prints.

All students will develop their own negatives. Outside processing is not advised nor permitted unless discussed with the teacher or under certain circumstances. Assignments will be given weekly and students will be assessed on these assignments weekly in the form of a one-to-one critique with the instructor or SILC leader. Late work policy only applies to major grades. Late work will be graded and the grade will be reduce by 50%. Exceptions to this rule are: assignments where the negatives did not develop properly for reasons beyond the students control (ex. bad film, old chemistry). Excused absences. The student will receive a one day grace period per excused absence. This mean that any work due on the day the student misses must be turned in on the day after they return, at the beginning of the period, to get full credit. This does not apply to assignment that you have know about for several weeks prior to your absence. If you know you are going to be absent and you have a project due make sure you turn in your work prior to your absence. Please, Turn your work in on time. I do not want you to make bad grades because of late work. Tardiness Three tardies equals one unexcused absence. If you are tardy it will be up to you to find out what you missed and what you should be working on. Unexcused absence You will receive an unexcused absences when you do not come to class or leave in the middle of class and have not previously arranged with the attendance office your absence. If you do not take care of your absence you will not be able to participate in any field trips and if you are a Senior you will have to take written exams for the midterm and final. You may not come in later and say I was taking pictures. It is your responsibility to come to class, on-time, and sign out if you need to take pictures. Same as tardies you will need to find out from a class mate what needs to be done. Sincerely, Mr. Chris Fullwood, M.A. Art/Photo Instructor Highland Park High School fullwoc@hpisd.org

Supply list for Art III & IV photography Needed supplies Digital SLR (single lens reflex) 35mm camera body or Canon G10 digital point and shoot (not mandatory but highly recommended). It is not mandatory for you to purchase a digital camera. You can use your analog camera from last year and shoot color film. Digital camera will just make your life more convenient. This is a personal preference so shop around and see what you like. It is not necessary to buy an extremely expensive camera body. Pentax makes a good digital camera (K100D) as well as Olympus. I recommend the Canon Rebel XT, XTi or 30D, but if you have lenses of another brand I would buy a camera body that matches those lenses. Note: the Canon G10 is the only point and shoot digital camera that is allowed to be used in this class. There are two reasons. 1. It allows you to shoot in RAW format. 2. It has manual control settings. Package of photo quality inkjet paper (50 sheets would be good). 6-in-1 or 5-in-1 reflector set. wide angle to normal & normal to telephoto lens. Incidnet light meter. This is the most important item in a photographers bag aside from their camera. I recommend the Sekonic L-358 flash master. Print File archival storage pages. Stocked for your convenience in the student store. Photo Binder with rings. Stocked for your convenience in the student store. flash memory card, SD card or other external storage device. Camera Bag or backpack External Flash Portfolio 2 Hake brushes. Can be purchased at bostick & Sullivan 2 hand towels for cleaning brushes OHP transparency film. Either inkpress or pictorico Optional Supplies

Polarizing filter wide angle or fisheye lens Lens Baby Resources Stores to buy supplies Local stores: Cooter s Village Camera ( 15% discount for students. Excellent range of supplies. Located in Highland Park Village. Easy access from school and home. Great service and knowledgeable staff. Competitive Camera in Dallas ( Good place to buy a clean used camera or new camera. Also a good place to buy paper and film. 30% discount for students on film and paper. Wolf Camera ( This place is normally much more expensive than B&H or Adorama. Online discount stores: B&H Photography online ( This is the cheapest place I know of to buy photo supplies. Bostick & Sullivan ( Alternative processing supplies. Photographers Formulary ( The ultimate alternative processing online location. Adorama ( Another good place to buy photo supplies online. Profilm.com ( Cheapest film I have ever seen. But sometimes higher than B&H Freestyle photographic ( website is very user friendly. Good prices. They carry a lot of alternative materials for alternative processing.
