Davis is a photographer whose haunting imagery is about capturing remembered moments from the past, exploring history through photographing what remains from previous eras. She prints these images using a variety or historic photographic processes. She received a BFA from Moore College of Art and her MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from The University of the Arts where she has published several artist books. Sandra has been teaching various photography processes for over ten years including darkroom and digital photography and alternative processes. Course Description Embrace the fundamentals of film photography and explore the expressive qualities of black and white fine art photography. Using black and white film, experiment with and master the Holga 120N, a favorite of art photographers worldwide. Coursework includes lectures, assignments and critiques, as well as developing and printing film in the chemical darkroom. Holga 120N cameras can be borrowed from CE for the duration of this course. A roll of 120 film will be supplied for the first class; additional rolls of film are the responsibility of each individual. Resources for purchasing film will be included in the course syllabus available online. If you would like to purchase your own Holga 120N, they can be purchased at Amazon.com or other online shops for $20 $50. Course Overview Students will first lean how load film and how to judge a good exposure. When the film is exposed, students will learn how to develop the latent images. Film will then be enlarged to make prints. Once basic printing is achieved, students will begin finessing the prints. Along with the basic process oriented necessities, students will be introduced to a variety of images that are produced using toy cameras to open their minds to the wide variety of imagery that can be made with a simple camera. Students will be able to experiment with filters and add on lenses as well as double exposure techniques and photographing in low light situations.
2 Course Expectations 1. Students learn how to effectively use the Holga 120 camera. 2. Students learn to shoot images using 120 film format. 3. Students learn proper film development. 4. Students learn black and white darkroom printing. 5. Students will be encouraged to experiment with subject matter, investigate unusual lighting, and work with filters and add on lenses. Prerequisites Classes or Knowledge Required for this Course There are no prerequisite for this course. Course Objectives At the end of this course, students will be able to: 1. Students will be able to effectively use the Holga 120 camera to make unexepected, quirky, and yet compelling images. 2. Students will understand the craft of darkroom printing including finessing the print to present their images in the best possible way. 3. Students will understand what makes a good photograph in terms of content, composition, and technical quality. 4. Students will acquire and develop intellectual, technical and analytical skills to make photographs that communicate, which separates the picture maker from the picture taker. 3 Course Materials Supplies 120 Holga Camera. You may use one on loan from the Continuing Studies Department. You may also work with a Diana (120 format) plastic camera Each student will receive: 1 roll of 400 ISO120 black & white film. Students will need to purchase: 4 6 rolls of 400 ISO 120 black & white film film sleeves for 120 film sheets Multigrade Multigrade Resin Coated or Fiber Based silver gelatin paper. Students are welcome use photographic paper they already own to print on. SAFTEY GUIDELINES 1. No food or drinks are allowed at anytime or anywhere near the film processing areas (a.k.a. the sink area) or in the darkrooms.. 2. Do not inhale chemicals or put them close to your face. 3. Wear protective gear like gloves if you have sensitive skin of skin allergies. Wear an apron (optional) if you don t want chemicals staining your clothing. 4. If any chemicals get on your skin, wash the area immediately. 5. If you don t wear gloves, you must use tongs while in the darkroom. 6. Use the proper tongs in the trays they are designated for. If the tongs get mixed up, please rinse them before returning them to the proper tray. 7. Rock trays gently: Do not slosh chemicals in the trays, as they may spill onto the floor. 8. Be respectful of your surroundings and clean up any spills. 9. Do not take anything wet into dry areas. 10. Students must adhere to all equipment room policies and must report any damage to any equipment or materials. COURSE ACTIVITIES Presentations There will be several presentations of work made by toy camera photographers and / or imagery that is connected with a particular assignment. Demonstrations The first 4 weeks willl start with a demonstration, followed by individual instruction as students do the task demonstrated in class. Assignments There will be four assignments for this course. Assignments will be presented in class with a lecture and specifics. Students will receive handouts and PDF files via for each assignment. Students will be expected to complete the shooting part of the assignement within a week. Printing will be done during class. 3
4 Darkroom / Photo Lab Most weeks, students will be working in the darkroom / photo lab. They are expected to be prepared with photographic materials each week. Critiques / Sharing Work Each critique will be conducted as a group critique. Work will be presented to the entire class, and the instructor. The student is expected to make an introductory statement about the images as a body of work. On scheduled critique days, the entire class is expected to participate in all discussions of work. COURSE POLICIES Student Feedback/Communication I welcome all feedback on the course. My preferred method of communication with individual students is via . Students are offered the opportunity to complete an official mid semester evaluation of the course. This evaluation is traditionally delievered + completed electronically at the beginning of the fifth class session. If you experience a legitimate emergency (according to my standards) which will prevent you from completing required coursework on time, I expect you to communicate with me at the earliest reasonable opportunity. Please state the nature of the emergency and when you expect to turn in the coursework. Attendance Attendance is mandatory and essential to your performance. The information needed to complete assignments properly will be given in class. As a student in this course, it is your responsibility to make certain you obtain information covered should you miss a class session. Previously absent students must come to the following class with all of the appropriate work due for that day. All students are expected to arrive to class on time and remain present for the duration of the class.
