All work including photographs for this course must be new and original. Do not submit any old photographs. Submitting photographs that were taken days, months or even years ago not only defeats the purpose of the course but also violates college academic integrity policies. Any student caught cheating or plagiarizing will be recommended to the dean for disciplinary action. Warning: I take academic integrity very seriously. Disability Policy: Disabled Students Program & Services(DSPS)
4 COC provides services for students with disabilities. The link above contains valuable information about the program, eligibility criteria, and procedures to follow for accessing services. I will not accept processed or altered images, as this class is about using your camera to take the best photos you can, and about getting the most from your camera. Film Camera Users: Shoot and process at least 1 roll of 36 Exposure Color Print Film per assignment. Have film processed at a 1-Hour lab. Have the lab make a digital photo CD of the negatives. No need to get the negatives printed. Course Materials: In class slide lectures (PowerPoint) In class discussions, demos, and critiques Minimum of 2GB USB flash drive for submission of photo assignments Course materials may be of a mature nature Extra Credit Gallery Report: One written gallery report describing and analyzing artwork viewed at a museum or gallery is available for extra credit. Detailed Extra credit Guidelines are provided in the Assignments section of the Blackboard course website under Extra Credit. You may NOT use an online gallery, Thomas Kinkade, or Martin Lawrence Gallery. REQUIRED PHOTOGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT / TOOLS / MATERIALS: TEXT: London, Barbara and Stone, Jim A Short Course in Photography: An Introduction to Photographic Technique, ISBN-13: , 8th edition. If you purchase a copy of this book in the COC Bookstore it will come with a custom cover and be bundled with some helpful online tools called MyArtsLab. You can utilize these tools as a supplement to the textbook. Version 7 of the textbook will also be acceptable, as will certain other textbooks. If there is an alternate photographic textbook you would like to use instead please bring it to me to see if it is acceptable. CAMERA: It is recommended that students provide their own 35 MM film or Digital SLR camera (5 Megapixels or higher) capable of manual exposure adjustment. The camera must have manual focus, manual metering and manual adjustments for both aperture and shutter speed. This does not need not be an expensive 'state of the art' camera, in fact most of the basic models will be fine. Most new DSLR cameras can be used if they have sufficient manual settings. Many point and shoot and compact cameras have a semi-manual exposure adjustment that is NOT APPROPRIATE for this class. Buy a camera at a store where you have 30 days to try it out, or borrow one from a friend. Many times it is easier to make a choice once you have worked with a camera for a while. Check out for consumer information on digital cameras. You can also do side-by-side comparisons. Good Starter Cameras: Canon Rebel DSLR - 10 MP or higher - $300-$900 for kit. Canon Rebel 35mm SLR $100 - $300 for kit. Nikon D40 - DSLR MP - $500 for kit. Nikon FM10 35mm SLR - $200 - $400 for kit. ACQUIRING A CAMERA: If you do not own a SLR camera the COC photo lab, MENH-133, has both film and digital cameras available for checkout. In order to check out a camera or other equipment you must present a your class schedule and your valid COC Student ID. All equipment will be 6-day check out. All reserved equipment must be checked out on Wednesdays 3:00-6:00pm Reserved equipment not picked up by 6:01pm on Wednesday will be given to the next student that requests it for checkout. All equipment is due for return the following Tuesday by 6:00pm. If you have technical questions regarding the basic use of your camera the photo lab staff may be able to provide assistance. Bring your camera by the photography lab or a camera
6 store not an electronics store such as Best Buy for assistance in determining whether your camera is capable of a true manual setting. LENS: You will need a standard lens; this is the lens that comes standard with most 35mm cameras. The lens must be able to be adjusted for both manual focusing and aperture adjustment. Zoom lens are also fine, just make sure that it has a range that includes 50mm. IE: 28mm-80mm. MANUAL: You will need to have the camera manual for your model camera. If you do not have the original manual you must either get a photocopy or find all of the operating instructions online. 18% Gray Card. 35MM SLR USERS: Access to a computer and basic computer knowledge. Color print film for each assignment. You will have your negatives scanned onto a CD at 1-Hour Lab. DSLR USERS: Access to a computer and basic computer knowledge. Camera memory card 512 or larger. OPTIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT / TOOLS / MATERIALS: Tripod (recommended.) Flash unit. Supplementary lenses - zoom, telephoto, macro or wide-angle. FILTER: You should have a standard UV or Skylight filter for your camera. These are inexpensive filters ($8-$15) that both protect your lens, and filter out UV rays (note: stacking filters is not recommended as it can cause vignetting on wide angle lenses.) COURSE WEBSITE: (note there is NO www ) o Your login is your 7-digit COC student ID number. o For example ID # , would login o Password is student (For current/past Blackboard students, use the password you submitted.) SOFTWARE: Access to a film or digital manually adjustable camera as well as imaging editing software is necessary for successful completion of this course. If you use a film camera you MUST have a Photo CD made of your images when you have your negatives developed. Prints of your negatives are NOT necessary. Most computers come pre-loaded with some type of image editing software, however if your computer does not contain one you will need to acquire an imaging editing software program. Photoshop Elements is frequently shipped with digital cameras and scanners. Some Links are available below. Recommended image editing software programs: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Elements and Google s Picassa. A media card reader will assist you in the downloading of digital images. USB card readers are usually plug-and-play (PnP) with most current operating software. Minimal prerequisite skills required for students taking this online course: Basic computer operations. Word processing skills. Copy and paste between software programs. with ability to include an attachment. High speed internet accessibility. Ability to navigate and research on the internet. Use proper format via electronic communication, i.e. Netiquette. Knowledge of burning files to and accessing files from CD.
7 Ability to download image files from camera memory card or Photo CD. Ability to communicate clearly in writing using standard English. Technical Support: Blackboard technical support for students is available Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM until 7:00 PM.
