1 PHOTO 240 ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY A,B,C,D SYLLABUS Professional Class FALL 2009 Fridays: 9:00am-10:00am Lecture Lab: 10:00am - 2:00pm OFFICE HOURS- Monday: 2:30pm - 3: 30pm Michael Moya- Instructor of Record Office# Cell# moyafotografx@netscape.net ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY 240 will develop each student s professional skills as a photographer. The concept of this class is to work as a team! Each student will have a specific role as part of a photography crew. Utilizing roles in the photography and film industry, each student will be responsible for different aspects of a commercial shoot. We will look at all aspects of a photography assignment. There will be greater emphasis on the creative approach to your photography using the digital medium. Extensive applications with Studio lighting will be covered throughout this semester. Each assignment in this course will be considered as an actual working job. As part of the class each student will be considered as WORK FOR HIRE. This semester will specifically approach the working role of each job on a photography set. Assignments will be geared towards the pre and postproduction aspects of your photography. There will be opportunity for students to participate in different production roles on set. Each assignment will have client requirements to follow. As team collaboration your interpretation of the assignment will be your decision. Greater detail to technique and purpose will be expected from each assignment! IT WILL BE IMPORTANT TO WORK AS A COOPERATIVE UNIT! EVERYONE WILL BE EXPECTED TO FILL IN JOB ROLES AS NEEDED ON SET! A PROFESSSIONAL STUDIO IS PAID FOR PRODUCTION! CONTINUITY AS WELL AS WORK FLOW IS VITAL FOR RESULTS! There will be a greater demand for students to schedule their photography more productively in meeting realistic deadlines. I. INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS: Each student with the guidance of the instructor will analysis a specific topic for his or her COMMERCIAL ASSIGNMENT. There will be considerable preparation with concept and story design. Basic design will be consider in evaluating each ASSIGNMENT Final criteria for this assignment will be the strength of its visual statement. 1

2 A. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1. Utilizing light in applications of photography for creating visual Statements with intent. 2. Being comfortable using both traditional film and digital mediums. 3. Basic understanding of digital capture and processing using Photoshop 4. Developing an idea from concept, pre production, capture, post production To the final visual presentation. II. STUDENT REQUIREMENTS: Advanced Professional Photography 240 Requires completion of 8-units of Intermediate 230 or its equivalent and instructors approval to fulfill prerequisites. Advanced Professional Photography 240 is an Open Entry /Open Exit Class, which means you, may work at your own pace, assuming you complete at least 2- unit per semester. TEXTBOOK: Photography by London and Upton Edition Five. The textbook is also available in the Laney Library. Camera: 35mm or larger SLR or Digital camera with manual operation. Ideally a camera with built in exposure meter and interchangeable lens. Digital camera ideally will have a minimum 5 MB file. CDs or DVDs: for burning digitals files to archive and catalog. Flash Drive: USB plug in used for downloading and transferring digital files FILM: This department uses Kodak chemistry; therefore, Kodak film is preferable. You may use other brands. If you choose to bring in your own developer to match your choice of film/developer combination you may do so. Plus-X, Tri-X, and T-Max films are good favorites. We do not have T-Max developer in the department, which give best results for T-Max films. Ilford HP5 is also a very good all-purpose film with great latitude and can be developed in Kodak chemistry. Suggestion: 75% of your film should be ISO 100 or 125. The remainder being ISO 400. Think about teaming up with someone and buying bulk film and paper and sharing costs! Anti Static cloth or Negative brush: Paper: All black and white assignments require 8x0 Resin Coated (RC) paper. Students must consult instructor before using fiber paper. You may use graded or Multigrade (Polycontrast) paper. It is recommend to invest in a box of100 8x10 sheets if you can afford. Your savings will be considerable. Filters: If you use multi-graded paper you will need to use contrast filters to print/ The best savings Is to purchase Ilfords Student Pack which contains a set of 6x6 2

3 filters, an instruction booklet and a 25 sheet package of Ilfords Multigrade Delux paper. Developing Tanks & Reel: It is advisable to set yourself up to develop at home. While it is not necessary, you will save a great deal of time by bringing your film to class already processed and sleeved. You may discuss with instructor on home setup! If you choose to develop at Laney, you must provide your own reels (2). Patterson plastic reels or equivalent. We do have Nikkor stainless steel tank for steel reels. I prefer stainless steel because of the speed and durability! Talk to me about demonstration. Grain Focuser: This is optional but I highly recommend investing in a good Micro- Sight grain focuser with X10 power. If you are going to be doing a lot of printing this is the ultimate in quality sharpness. COLOR FILM: If you choose to shoot some of your assignments with color transparency film I recommend FUJI CHROME professional emulsions. Fuji film is very saturated and produces vibrant colors, which I prefer. Students must have the necessary equipment & materials by the 2 nd week of class III. GRADING PROCEDURE: Your final GRADE will be based on 3-CRITERIA: Completed group assignments, individual project and final exam will be averaged to determine your final grade. The number of assignment you complete successfully along with your marketing analysis, notebook and final exam will determine the number of units you will complete for credit, regardless of the number of units enrolled! 1. Attendance: Friday: Lecture: 9am-10: 30AM Lab: 10:30-2:30PM ATTENDING AND BEING ON TIME FOR LECTURE IS A MAJOR CONSIEDRATION IN THE PROFESSIONAL CLASS. Your attendance requirement will be based on the number of units you are attempting. Unexcused absences and tardiness will be a factor in determines your final grade. Being on time in a vocational photography class is considered an essential part of satisfactory performance. AS A PROFESSIONAL YOU CAN NOT BE LATE ON DEADLINES! SUCCESS IS BASED ON YOUR PRODUCTIVITY a. 2-units require weekly attendance for your particular section. b. 4-units require weekly attendance for your particular section plus one additional section each week. c. 8-units require weekly attendance in all sections for the week. EACH SECTION INCLUDES COMPLETE LECTURE AND LAB PERIODS 3

4 2. SEMESTER Assignments: FINAL CRITIQUE a. Each assignment is worth 1 UNIT of CREDIT unless other wise specified In your contract. Assignments must be completed by the indicated DUE DATES or as arranged by special agreement. YOU ARE EXPECTED TO COMPLETE ASSIGNMENTS IN THE PRESCRIBED TIME. (1.) 2-unit student completes two- assignments. (2.) 4-unit student completes four assignments. (3.) (8-unit student completes each assignment twice! 2. These FINAL CRITIQUE assignments will be of your choice. There will be specific requirements for each assignment you choose and must follow exactly. These assignments will be considered your final and best work. YOU HAVE THE OPTION TO SHOOT EITHER FILM OR DIGITAL FOR YOUR FINAL ASSIGNMENTS! SEPT. 11 FINAL ASSIGNMENT CHOICES DUE! YOUR FINAL ASSIGNMENT WILL BE PRESENTED THE LAST WEEK FOR CLASS CRITQUE! EACH GROUP ASSIGNMENT IS WORTH 10 POINTS AND THE TOTAL ASSIGNMENTS ARE WORTH HALF OF YOUR UNIT REQUIREMENTS 3. Final Exam/Business Plan Failure to take the final exam will result in a penalty of one full grade. The Exam will be considered as one assignment in your final grade. Failure to complete a business plan may result in a penalty of one full Grade. The business plan is one assignment in your final grade. 4
