RM A-219 INSTRUCTOR: Eizabeth DiGiovanni DiGiovanni_Elizabeth@sac.edu Phone: (714) (Fine Arts Office) COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a beginning photography course. In this class, you will become familiar with different kinds of cameras, lenses, light meters, digital photography, basic camera functions, white balance, Adobe Photoshop CS6, composition, lighting, inkjet printing and print presentation. The method of instruction is through lecture, demonstration, power points and critiques of the students work. Hopefully, you will develop a refined aesthetic knowledge of great photography as a way of visually communicating. In addition, you will become technically proficient with your camera, its controls and how those controls affect the quality of your final image. Materials Fee: $15.00 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1. Using basic camera functions such as shutter speeds and f-stops students successfully creat a series of images to demonstrate their ability to control the look fo motion and depth of field. 2. Using basic prinsciples of lighting and posing techniques, students will produce a series of window light portraits that demonstrate their ability to see and utilize light in order to compliment the features of their subject comparable to the minimum standards of a professional portrait studio. 3. Utilizing equipment in the computer labs, students will produce quality photographic prints. 4. Using basic visual conecpts including compostional guidelines, students will produce images in the studio or their personal environments that demonstrate their ability to communicate ideas pictorially based on professionally accepted criteria. 1
2 STUDENT PROJECTS: 1. COMPOSITION After viewing a power point on composition, students will create images demonstrating the elements of composition. Instructor will orient students with the Computer Lab for the completion of the assignment. Basic image capture and printing techniques in Adobe Photoshop CS6 will be covered. 100 pts 2. B&W VS. COLOR CONVERSION Students will pick several images and convert them from color to B&W using Photoshop CS pts 3. PEOPLE in THEIR ENVIRONMENT This assignment will acquaint the student with basic camera shooting techniques, such as setting the correct shutter speed, f-stop # on the aperture, and ISO #. Equivalent exposures will be introduced. Student will photograph people in their environment. Further instruction of Adobe CS6 will be continued. Several prints will be made. 100 pts. Or LANDSCAPE This assignment is involved with both natural and manmade landscapes using basic compositional techniques. 4. DEPTH OF FIELD This assignment will introduce the student to the camera lens, how the aperture size controls the final image, and equivalent exposures. One photograph will demonstrate maximum depth of field and the other will be minimum depth of field. 100 pts 5. MOTION This assignment will introduce the student to the shutter speed controls, how they control or effect motion with respect to the final image, and equivalent exposures. In this assignment, the student will hand in three photographs that are mounted. One will demonstrate capturing or stopping fast action, the other will show blurred action and the final photograph will demonstrate panning. These should be of the same subject and will all be printed approximately 3.5x5 on one 8.5 x 11 print. 100 pts 6. WINDOW LIGHT PORTRAIT This assignment involves creating a formal head and shoulders portrait using minimal equipment (directional diffuse light from a window). An additional photograph will be made of an informal portrait. Two Part assignment. 100 pts 7. MULTIPLE IMAGE or NARRATIVE This assignment consists of a larger project with multiple images that are either a series or narrtive that also takes into account visual display in it s presentation 200 pts 8. FINAL EXAM. 100 pts All assignments should have your name, class day and time, instructors name, and the assignment title and SAC written legibly on the BACK of the matte board. 2
3 MATERIALS LIST: 1. An adjustable DSLR camera. The camera should have both automatic and manual controls of focus, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. 2. Memory card 3. Flash drive (jump drive or thumb drive) 4. Double sided tape 5. Mat board: 11x14 in white or black 10 board minimum SUPPLIES: You will be purchasing inkjet photo paper, mount board and other miscellaneous materials listed above. The college will furnish all necessary inks, software, and computer facilities. PHOTOGRAPHIC SUPPLIERS Samy's Camera Freestyle (in Hollywood & Santa Fe Springs and mail order) TEXT: A Short Course in Digital Photography (2 nd edition) By Barbara London & Jim Stone. ISBN # Or (3 rd edition) ISBN # GRADING: You start this class with a zero not an A grade. Grades are earned by the student, not given by the instructor! Grades are based on the quality of work that includes: concept, composition, technical execution, and presentation. NOTE: All photos should be taken during this semester! New photos for required for each assignment, you can not use images from previous assignments. I do NOT want to see: snapshots (ex. family), SAC Campus, vacation photos (unless taken during the semester & you show proof of travel). All assignments are due at the time of critique are considered late. LATE assignments will receive a one full grade deduction. No late assignment turned in after the second week it is due will be accepted and the Final Project will not be accepted late for any reason. 3
4 Semester grades are computed on a point system the higher the total points for the semester, the higher the letter grade. The total number of points may vary depending on the number of projects and exams given during the semester. Each project or exam is generally worth 100 points, & the final project is worth 200 points. Each assignment must be turned in at the due date to receive full credit. Late assignments will have the grade deducted 10 points. Assignments turned in after the critique will be deducted 10 points. Unless otherwise noted by me, all assignments will be turned in mounted on 11x14 inch mount board. The mount board must be white or black. Assignments must be turned in electronically in your PUT folder as well to receive full credit. All assignments must have your name, date, class, school and time, the instructor s name should be written on the BACK of the mount board. INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENTS SEMESTER GRADING = A A = % of semester total = B B = % of semester total = C C = % of semester total = D D = % of semester total = F F = 0 63 % of semester total COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 1. The student must attend all classes, lectures and critiques. If you miss a class it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed. If there is an emergency in your life, please speak with the instructor. If you miss a class because of a serious illness it must be validated by a physician s note. Other valid circumstances for missing a class include a death of a close family member or a natural disaster. (see excusd absences below) 2. All assignments must be completed in full and handed in on time. No late assignments will be accepted. 3. All cell phones must be turned off and put away during class time. If you are speaking or texting on your cell phone during class time you will be asked to leave and you will be marked abscent for that day. 4
5 4. The instructor may drop a student however, it is the responsibility of the student to officially drop the class. If the appropriate forms are not completed an academic letter grade of F will be given. 5. All students must participate in all class critiques. Your participation during your critic is an integral part of your grade and you will be giving a presentation in class for your final assignment. ATTENDANCE POLICY: This is a Lecture & Lab class, your attendence in BOTH is REQUIRED. The class is designed to utilize the entire semester and class time. Please be present for all lectures, critiques and lab hours. Tardiness/or leaving early will not be tolerated. 2 tardy = 1 absence 2 absences = drop from class Excused absences require are granted only after receiving both the original and a copy (that I will keep) of an official note that includes a phone number from a Doctor or Court official. A combination of over three absences and/or tardies and you maybe dropped from the class. Do not ask me "What did I miss in class?" It is your responsibility to get the lecture and assignment information from a classmate and the textbook. The Academic Honesty policy is on page 33 of the college catalogue.
