1 South Miami Senior High: School of the Arts AP Studio Art: 2D Design Syllabus Teacher: Contact: Mrs. Lizzie Hunter Program Overview The AP Studio Art course is designed to provide students with an intensive learning experience equivalent to that of a studio art college course. These courses are designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art. AP Studio Art is not based on a written exam; instead, students must submit portfolios for evaluation. The AP 2D Design Portfolio involves decision-making about how to use the elements and principles of art in an effective way. The principles of design - unity/variety, balance, emphasis, contrast, rhythm, repetition, proportion/scale, figure/ground relationships - can be articulated through the elements of line, shape, color, value, texture and space. Effective design is possible whether one uses representational or abstract approaches to art. For this portfolio, students are asked to demonstrate mastery of design through any two-dimensional medium or process, including, but not limited to, graphic design, digital imaging, photography, collage, fabric design, weaving, fashion design, fashion illustration, painting and printmaking. Student Objectives -Maintain a strong work ethic. -Work through and solve visual problems effectively. -Refine the ability to draw and paint what you see. -Understand how imagery can be manipulated to communicate content. -Use sketchbook as a visual journal, a record of life and ideas. -Pursue your work with a passion. Be fearless. Course Structure The course will provide students with an intensive curriculum aimed at developing each individual s artistic voice. Hands-on studio time will be infused with a number of discussions, critiques, and juried exhibition opportunities. Students will need to work outside of the allocated class hours in order to complete the required number of pieces for the course. ATTENDANCE and BEING ON TIME are extremely important. Students learn through the process of doing each class project. They also learn by evaluating and comparing their ideas and artwork with other students in the classroom, making class participation an important component of their final grade. Class projects are to be done in the classroom and homework is to be done at home. Students are responsible for getting their absences and tardies excused in accordance with our school s attendance policy, and will receive an F for each unexcused absence to be averaged in with their other grades.

2 Assessment and Evaluation Portfolio Development Artwork evaluation includes the following considerations: F Poor use of materials, little attention to detail, marks on white areas D Satisfactory use of materials, satisfactory attention to detail C Competent use of materials, adequate attention to detail B Good use of materials, good attention to detail, clean white areas A Excellent use of materials, extreme attention to detail, clean white areas Additional points are given at the discretion of the teacher for exceptional problem solving, overcoming difficulties, complexity of the overall project or extra effort put forth in the process. Reading and Written Assignments Grades in this category include art criticism, written peer critiques, artists statements, etc. Sketchbook Assignments Sketchbook journals will be used to document the mandatory ideation process for in class and out of class projects. This is a place for you to think, and experiment with linework, markmaking, color, shape, composition and media. Twice per week, students will encounter in-class sketchbooks assignments designed to encourage creative problem solving. Student MUST have their sketchbooks with them every day. Participation F Poor use of class time, not focused on task, work handed in late, mediocre image development D Satisfactory use of class time yet not fully attentive to task, work handed in late, sufficient and adequate image development C Good use of class time, focused on project, work handed in on time, competent development of image B Very Good use of class time, very focused project, work in on time, very respectable development of image A Excellent use of class time, strong daily focus on project, work in on time or completed early, visually compelling final image Extra Credit There will be one extra credit opportunity available each quarter

3 Portfolio Submission All students must submit a completed portfolio on or before the AP Exam date. The portfolio will consist of three parts: Breadth A set of artworks that show mastery of varied media, techniques, and subject matter. This section of the portfolio contains teacher-driven projects assigned for the purposes of developing student abilities as well as fostering a spirit of creative problem solving - students are encouraged to investigate the what if possibilities within a given set of limitations. Concentration A body of related works describing an in-depth exploration of a specific visual idea. Students are encouraged to explore a personal, central interest as intensively as possible. Quality Five matted works selected for excellence in conception and production no larger than 18 x 24. These pieces will be selected from the most successful works of both concentration and breadth. The Studio Art Examination will be on Friday, May 6 th, 2016 One class period has been dedicated to the breadth portion of the portfolio, the other period will solely focus on the concentration section. All 24 works must be uploaded onto the AP Studio Art Digital Submission Web Application prior to the exam date. The first major upload, consisting of all works completed since the start of the school year, will take place before students leave for spring break. Originality and Copyright The course teaches students to understand artistic integrity. Students must develop original imagery, and are expected to draw from direct observation whenever possible. The use of published photographs and artwork is prohibited as in duplication; they should only be used in service of a personal vision. This fee can be paid for in cash, or a money order (no personal checks) made out to South Miami Senior High; please write the student s name and ID number on the memo line. You will be receiving instructions for enrolling as a parent in two different applications that will be used in Mrs. Hunter s classes this year (Remind and Class Dojo). Along with the district s electronic grade book, these programs provide parents with ways of keeping up with what s going on in class and how each student is progressing.
