Building Science Internship Prgram Guide fr Emplyers Thank yu fr cnsidering hiring an intern frm Appalachian State University's Building Science Prgram. The Internship is a prgram that prvides qualified university students with supervised experience in prductin, management, research, studi and design activities f mdern businesses and industries. Objectives f the Internship. Prvide the intern with a relevant, practical educatinal experience. 2. Prvide business r industry with qualified and experienced graduates. 3. Acquaint the intern with the physical, academic, and envirnmental requirements f his r her chsen field. 4. Develp the intern's ability t search fr and find emplyment in the industry. Intern Cmpensatin Students are required t pay tuitin fr 6 credit hurs t enrll in the internship and have apprximately 3 years preparatin in their chsen field. Therefre, we expect interns t be paid during their internship. At the same time, we recgnize the internship as an educatinal experience affrded by an emplyer. The intern's salary is a persnal matter between the student and his r her emplyer. Wrk Perid During mst internships, the student is required t remain full-time emplyed with ne firm fr at least six weeks. The requirement is t wrk a minimum f 40 hurs fr each credit hur earned (240 hurs ttal). Students wh participate in the Internship Prgram are under n bligatin t accept permanent emplyment with the spnsring firm r agency. Likewise, the spnsring firm is nt bligated t ffer full-time emplyment t the intern beynd the internship perid. The intern/emplyer Relatinship In all cases, the intern is cnsidered t be an emplyee and shuld be held respnsible fr perfrming the assigned duties in a satisfactry manner. All cmpany regulatins, cnditins f health and safety, and legal requirements apply, and any cmpany vilatins shuld be handled in the usual manner. Accrdingly, the remuneratin shuld be cmparable t ther emplyees f similar experience and senirity ding similar wrk. While interning, the student is classified as a student f Appalachian State University and is subject t all applicable University regulatins. Thus, there is a student-teacher relatinship with the university, as well as an emplyer-emplyee relatinship with the cmpany. The greater the variety f wrk experiences affrded the intern, the greater the pprtunity fr learning. Scheduled jb rtatins and invlvement in special prjects are a means fr expsing the intern t varius experiences during limited emplyment. An intern can gain much by cnferring with persns respnsible fr sme f the majr functins f the cmpany, thereby increasing their understanding f "the bigger picture" in their desired prfessin. Summary Frm The student intern will request the signature f the emplyer n an Internship Summary Frm. The frm is used nly by the student and their Faculty Supervisr as a "cntract" fr academic credit. It is necessary t request a cpy f the student's Internship Prpsal prir t signing the summary frm t make sure there is an understanding f internship bjectives. Evaluatins The evaluatin f the intern n the jb must be made if the prgram is t be meaningful. Therefre, the supervisr is asked t submit tw evaluatins f the intern, ne at the midterm and ne at the end f the internship. The evaluatin frms are included in this dcument and are t be returned t the instructr f recrd. Visitatins Whenever pssible, the Faculty Supervisr r ther university representative will, at the emplyer's cnvenience, arrange fr a visit t the intern's wrk site. When visits are nt pssible, the Faculty Supervisr will be in cmmunicatin with bth the intern and the emplyer via phne and/r email. Revised Nvember 7, 20 Page f 9.
