Intrductin frm Head f Schl Over a decade ag, the Australian Cuncil f Engineering Deans in cnjunctin with Engineers Australia, and the Academy f Technlgical Sciences and Engineering published a review reprt, entitled "Changing the Culture: Engineering Educatin int the Future." A majr recmmendatin f the reprt was that a strategic prject be incrprated int the final year f engineering curses t enhance the learning prcess and educatinal utcmes: The prime gal f engineering educatin is t prvide the frmative knwledge, attitude and level f understanding t prduce graduates wh are well prepared t enter a prfessinal career. The attributes that graduates shuld have t a substantial degree are: ability t apply knwledge f basic science and engineering fundamentals; ability t cmmunicate effectively, nt nly with engineers, but als with the cmmunity at large; in depth technical cmpetence in at least ne engineering discipline; ability t undertake prblem identificatin, frmulatin and slutin; ability t utilise a systems apprach t design and peratinal perfrmance; ability t functin effectively as an individual and in multi disciplinary and multi cultural teams, with the capacity t be a team leader r manager as well as an effective team member; understanding f the scial, cultural, glbal and envirnmental respnsibilities f the prfessinal engineer, and fr the need fr sustainable develpment;... Engineers Australia, wh accredits ur Engineering degree curses, strngly advcates that students undertake a perid f expsure t prfessinal engineering practice during their curses. Fr Prfessinal Engineers this is at least 12 weeks and fr Engineering Technlgists, 8 weeks. They als encurage a clse invlvement fr students with engineering practice thrugh site visits, expsure t practicing engineers and invlvement in practical engineering prject wrk within the curse and especially in their final year f studies. Practicum: Each student enrlled in any f the Prfessinal Engineering degree prgrams at Edith Cwan University is required t gain at least 12 weeks practical wrk experience befre they can graduate frm their degree. Fr Engineering Technlgy curses the perid is 8 weeks. It is expected that this practical experience will enable the student t wrk with prfessinal engineers in ffice, labratry r site based envirnments, where the student can appreciate a range f industry issues that relate t engineers and engineering practice. It is mst likely t be undertaken during the summer and mid semester breaks where perids f several weeks are available. Prject: All f ur students are required t undertake a majr prject in their final year f studies. This prject can have either a research r mre practical engineering design fcus. Where pprtunities are available we encurage students t undertake prjects which are industry based r industry driven. Prjects are principally mnitred and assessed by ECU staff. Where the student has the pprtunity t spend time wrking in an engineering firm, r n site, there will als be an industry supervisr wh will mnitr and guide the student's wrk whilst ff campus. 2
Other Engagement Activities: The Schl is active in encuraging a wide range f cllabrative activities with its industry partners, including: Site visits t expse students t real life engineering design, cnstructin and peratinal envirnments. Encuraging practising engineers t assist with sessinal teaching within the Schl where it is pssible t access expertise nt available frm full time staff. Encuraging staff t establish cntacts within industry t extend their practical experience thrugh perids f secndment r cllabratin in research based tasks. Inviting key industry persns t jin the Engineering Cnsultative Cmmittee that is active in advising the Head f Schl in areas such as industry trends, emplyment pprtunities and the curriculum develpment t meet lng term industry needs. Opprtunities fr these activities can be discussed directly with the Head f Schl. Cnclusin: ECU believes that there are many benefits t bth the engineering cmmunity in general and emplyers in particular with the implementatin f these activities int the framewrk f the engineering curriculum. In view f the need t generate substantially greater numbers f highly capable graduates t meet the needs f Industry, we request yur assistance in supprting ur engagement prgram. 5 Purpse f the Industry Engagement Prgram This Handbk is intended t prvide backgrund infrmatin and guidance t practising engineers, engineering businesses and ptential emplyers wh wish t participate in the ECU Schl f Engineering Engagement Prgram. The Schl f Engineering has develped a rbust prgram which aims t meet the needs f students, emplyers and the brader cmmunity n a number f levels. The Schl f Engineering has an integrated apprach t higher educatin which requires a strng cmpnent f expsure t engineering practice fr all students. This is being achieved in a number f ways: The Practicum, where students cmplete a perid f wrk experience in an engineering rganisatin. Prject wrk, where students undertake a final year prject wrking n an industry based prject. Having practicing engineers prvide assistance with sessinal teaching where they can prvide supplementary skills nt available t full time staff. Prviding secndment pprtunities fr staff t spend time wrking in industry. Establishing cllabratins with full time staff fr research pprtunities with industry partners. Benefits fr Emplyers, Students and ECU: Benefits fr emplyers: Access t mtivated, skilled students. ECU staff prvide nging supprt fr participating students and emplyers. ECU Industry Liaisn persnnel mnitr student wrk experiences and prvide valuable liaisn fr Industry in terms f ECU expertise, research, curriculum and prgrams. Opprtunities t train and test ptential emplyees t meet cmpany needs. Benefits fr participating students: Opprtunity t gain experience at the same time as studying fr their degrees. Participatin in different industry wrkplaces allws them t try different wrk ptins. Financial assistance fr students ver their curse f study. Gain experience in jb applicatin and interviewing techniques. Assess a number f ptential emplyers and industries. Benefits fr ECU: The building f strng links with Industry Keeping up t date with latest develpments in Industry Evaluating the perfrmance f students in the wrkplace, bth individually and cllectively In mdern engineering educatin and training, it is becming vital t prvide an integrated curriculum delivery in which bth Industry and higher educatinal institutins are partnered. This cperative educatin enables students t cmbine the advantages f fcused academic studies with thse f realwrld hands n practice. Graduates f higher educatin engineering prgrams are increasingly required t perfrm cmpetently at a prfessinal level as sn as pssible after reaching industry. In this system, emplyers and educatrs share 4
the respnsibility f preparing students fr the rapidly changing engineering wrkplace. All parties benefit frm cperatin between Industry and academia. The ECU Industry Engagement Prgram thus invlves a three way partnership between The student ECU The industry partner Discipline Specialisatins: The Industry Engagement Prgram is ffered t undergraduate students in the fllwing discipline: Prfessinal Engineering: Bachelr f Engineering (4 year prgram) and Master f Engineering (3+2 year prgram) in: Civil Engineering Cmputer Systems Engineering Electrical Pwer Engineering Electrnics & Cmmunicatins Engineering Instrumentatin Cntrl & Autmatin Engineering Mechanical Engineering Mechatrnics Engineering Maritime Engineering (including Marine and Offshre Systems, Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture) in cllabratin with the Australian Maritime Cllege (Launcestn, Tasmania). Engineering Technlgy Bachelr f Technlgy Mtrsprts Insurance Where the student is receiving a salary, and is therefre an emplyee, then the emplyer is required t prvide nrmal emplyee insurance including Wrkers Cmpensatin cver. Where the student is nt an emplyee (i.e. n payments fr services are invlved) then the student s wrkplace insurance is prvided and funded by ECU. The University prvides "safety net" insurance fr students participating in ff campus activities (see Appendix F fr mre details). 5
Practicum The practicum experience is usually btained frm 2 r mre perids f wrk experience taken during the summer breaks, and pssibly during the inter semester break in June/July. Optinally it may als be taken after the cmpletin f the study prgram if it was nt pssible t secure a psitin earlier. Usually a minimum perid is taken t be ne cntiguus week t be accredited twards the practicum requirements. The practicum students are usually emplyed by the business and paid a mdest salary. The success f the Prgram depends n cperative liaisn between the parties such that: Each wrk situatin is develped and/r apprved by ECU as a suitable learning envirnment The participating student is engaged in prductive wrk rather than merely bserving The participating student receives remuneratin fr the wrk perfrmed The participating student s prgress is mnitred by ECU The participating student s perfrmance n the jb is supervised and mnitred by the student s emplyer The Practicum is a frmal part f the student's study prgram and is assessed accrding t the Practicum Assessment Plicy (Appendix A). Befre the cmmencement f the practicum perid the student is required t ensure that each key stakehlder has cmpleted the Practicum Risk Assessment and Management frm (Appendix B), and t return the frm t the practicum supervisr. Fr each cmpleted week f wrk, the student is required t cmplete the Prfessinal Lg Reprt (Appendix C). The purpse f this is t dcument the student's wrk activities while they are fresh in the mind. At the end f each perid f emplyment the student is required t submit a Practicum Certificate (Appendix D) that is cmpleted by bth the student and the emplyer r emplyer s nminee. The emplyer is als requested t cmplete the Emplyer Assessment Reprt (Appendix E). Once the required Practicum perid f wrk experience is cmpleted then the student is required t submit a Practicum Reprt ( wrds) that describes their experiences during at least ne f these emplyment perids, but culd als include experiences ver several Practicum perids. Requirements fr a Successful Experience The successful cmpletin f the Engineering Practicum unit requires One r mre certificates signed by the emplyer(s) cnfirming that the student has cmpleted at least 12 weeks (8 weeks fr BTech) f equivalent full time wrk experience in an engineering envirnment. A reprt by the student f typically wrds that describes the engineering experiences gained during ne, r mre, cntiguus perids f emplyment with ne cmpany. Care must be taken by the student in the preparatin f the practicum reprt. The quality f this reprt is a measure f the student s ability t dcument and cmmunicate his/her experiences as a prfessinal engineer. The ability t accurately dcument the learning experiences is an essential skill fr gaining full accreditatin status as a Chartered Prfessinal Engineer (r Chartered Engineering Technlgist) by Engineers Australia. The student must maintain a Prfessinal Develpment Lg fr the perid f the Practicum. This lg can prvide mst f the material fr the final reprt. In sme cases, the student will need t prepare a reprt fr the cmpany as a part f their designated activities with the cmpany. In such cases this reprt can frm 6
the basis f the practicum reprt, with the inclusin f suitable intrductin that links it with the Practicum bjectives. Student reprting tasks The Practicum Reprt shuld be between 2000 and 3000 wrds and include the fllwing infrmatin: 1. Intrductin f the cmpany its main prducts and services, the size f its wrkfrce, the range f engineering tasks, and its client base. 2. Descriptin f the student s activities within the cmpany, cncentrating n thse activities related t engineering develpment. 3. Descriptin f at least ne activity in detail. If this is a specific prject then dcument its purpse, the range f tasks, the relatinships between the varius players in the prject (nt just between the engineers), the student s rle, and prject status at bth entry and exit frm the prject. 4. Descriptin f any benefits gained in understanding the engineering prfessin frm this Practicum experience. In particular, did the experiences highlight the imprtance f any specific generic attributes f engineers as listed by Engineers Australia? Did the experience identify ther attributes that wuld be beneficial t an engineer? 5. A reflectin n the learning utcmes frm the wrk experience and hw these relate t the student s academic studies and a descriptin f any majr achievements during their perid f emplyment. 6. Include cpies f the Prfessinal Develpment Lg maintained during the Practicum. Supervising a Student Emplyers prvide supervisin, either persnally r by assigning a Supervisr, t ensure that students receive regular feedback n their prgress. It is recmmended that student learning bjectives and emplyer expectatins be utlined early in the wrk term s that bth the student and Supervisr are aware f each ther s gals. The Engineering Practicum Crdinatr will maintain cntact with the student and Supervisr via t discuss prgress and answer any questins related t the Prgram. The Crdinatr will als be available by phne at any pint t assist bth emplyers and students t reslve any issues which may arise. Near the end f the wrk term the Supervisr will be asked t cmplete a student perfrmance review frm and return it t the Practicum Crdinatr. It is recmmended that the Supervisr reviews the evaluatin with the student. Hw t Engage a Student under the Practicum Prgram Many cmpanies already have well defined recruitment prgrams fr vacatin (practicum) psitins. The Schl will endeavur t wrk with these cmpanies and t prmte these pprtunities t apprpriate students. Such cmpanies are encuraged t keep the Practicum Crdinatr infrmed abut these prgrams and pprtunities as they ccur. Fr ther cases the fllwing steps shuld be fllwed: 1. Prepare a Jb Descriptin A clear and cncise jb descriptin is fundamental t attracting and retaining the highest calibre students. Items that shuld be included in this jb descriptin are: An accurate jb title and the duratin f the psitin 7
Date f clse f applicatins Descriptin f the jb duties and respnsibilities Special skills required r preferred such as knwledge f specific cmputer sftware The apprpriate discipline f study Students are invited t review the jbs and submit their applicatins t the ECU Engineering Practicum Crdinatr. The resumes f interested students will be sent t the emplyer fr screening and selectin f interviewees. 2. Interview Candidates After reviewing the applicatins, the emplyer shuld cntact the ECU Engineering Practicum Crdinatr t identify the students t be interviewed. Emplyers can elect t interview candidates either in their wrkplaces r at ECU Jndalup campus. 3. Make a Jb Offer After the student has been ffered a psitin and has accepted, a frmal letter f ffer frm the emplyer shuld be sent t the ECU Engineering Practicum Crdinatr. The letter shuld include Start and end dates Hurs f wrk Salary and benefits Supervisr s name Lcatin f place f emplyment te again that where a salary is paid t the student, the emplyer is required t prvide the nrmal emplyee insurance cver t the student including Wrkers Cmpensatin benefits. If there is n salary payment the University prvides each student with a "safety net" cver fr persnal injury whilst in the wrkplace. 10 Engineering Prject A majr Engineering Prject is included in the student s final year curse f study. The Prject is a capstne activity which affrds the pprtunity f bringing tgether skills and knwledge frm ther cmpnents in the degree. It prvides an pprtunity t frge a cntributin t the student's discipline by an engineering research investigatin, a feasibility study r a design prject. Students shuld take significant wnership f the Prject, and demnstrate the capability f selling the results f the study t the engineering r wider cmmunity by presentatins and a written paper. A staff member will be nminated as a Supervisr t prvide guidance and general supervisin. Prject management techniques will be adpted and assessed in the implementatin f the Prject. A series f briefings are used t expse the students t basic research strategies and techniques. Evidence f sufficient prgress may be required frm time t time during the curse f the Prject. Where pprtunities exist, students are encuraged t take n industry based r industry driven prjects. Industry based prjects expse students t many f the practicalities f the prfessin as well as interacting with experienced engineers. Fr a prject based in industry there will be an industry supervisr (wh has a direct supervising rle, particularly when the student spends time lcated at the industry premises) and an academic supervisr wh is als expected t als cntribute t the prject wrk. Industry based prjects can be carried ut in varius ways. Mst students will be able t cmmit between ne and tw days per week fr the entire year t the task (mre time in semester 2). There is als an pprtunity t wrk n a full time basis during the mid year break in June/July r even in the summer break. In special cases it may be pssible t cmbine the Prject wrk with the Practicum requirements. The ttal duratin is expected t be tw semesters fr Bachelr f Engineering and Master f Engineering students, and ne semester fr Bachelr f Technlgy students Prject students are required t write a majr reprt/thesis and deliver a presentatin t their peers and academic staff, as well as their industry supervisrs where apprpriate. Prject Identificatin T be successful the prject needs t be apprpriately identified. This includes bth the scpe f the wrk and the amunt f wrk required. The fcus f the prject is t require the student t demnstrate their investigatin research and/r design skills. The student can wrk in a team, but the student's wn wrk and cntributin needs t be identifiable. Given that it is necessary fr the student t write a majr reprt n their wrk, this must be pssible withut vilating any cnfidentiality r intellectual prperty issues fr the business. The student and the University will nt claim any rights t the utcmes f the prject when the resurces fr the prject are prvided by the business cncerned. Once a prject is identified then this shuld be discussed with the Engineering Prject Crdinatr and any issues reslved befre engaging a student fr the prject. Hw t Setup an Industry based Prject 1. Prepare a Prject Prpsal 2. A clear and cncise prject prpsal is central t setting up a successful prject with a high calibre student. This prpsal shuld be sent t the Prject Crdinatr befre the end f December fr activatin in semester ne f the fllwing year, r the end f June fr a semester tw start. 9
An Engineering Prject Prpsal frm is included in Appendix E. Items that shuld be included in this prpsal are: A cncise descriptin f the prject task/prblem with expected utcmes. An indicatin f the resurces that can be prvided by the applicant/prpser. A clear statement n any cnfidentiality r intellectual prperty issues. It can smetimes be useful t engage mre than ne student n a prject, where cmplementary skills can be used t advantage (e.g. crss discipline skills). In such a case each student will be required t write their wn individual reprts fr assessment. While it is nt required t prvide a salary t the prject student(s), an ffer wuld be cnsidered favurably. 3. Selectin f Students After reviewing the prpsal, the Prject Crdinatr, will decide n the ptential f the prpsal and advise the applicant accrdingly. The Prject Crdinatr will then review the available students and prvide the applicant with pssible candidates frm which the applicant will be able t select the best student fr the prject. The Prject Crdinatr will als suggest an academic supervisr wh will then arrange a first meeting between the student(s), the academic supervisr and the industry supervisr. At this meeting the prject plan will be develped and the time cmmitments by the student(s) clearly defined, especially times spent ff campus and inside the applicant s business peratins 4. Prject Operatins Once in peratin, the Academic Supervisr is respnsible t mnitr prgress and t ensure any issues are reslved. The Academic supervisr will be the first pint f cntact fr the Industry Supervisr, as and when required. te again that where a salary is paid t the student, the emplyer is required t prvide the nrmal emplyee insurance cver t the student including Wrkers Cmpensatin benefits. If there is n salary payment the University prvides each student with a "safety net" cver fr persnal injury whilst in the wrkplace. 24 Appendix G: Student Insurance Insurance Students Infrmatin fr University staff wh versee student placements with external institutins. The University s insurance prgram includes prtectins fr enrlled students engaged in activities related t their studies and which are authrised by the University. Activities cvered include ff campus field excursins, wrk experience and elective placements. Wrk Experience Students n wrk experience are nt emplyees f hst institutins and they have n entitlements t Wrkers Cmpensatin benefits if they suffer an injury in the curse f their placements. Wrk experience prviders usually request cnfirmatin that the University s insurance cverage extends t its students. The Insurance Officer fllwing requests by Curse Supervisrs, will prvide apprpriate cnfirmatin. Students arranging their wn wrk experience nt required fr curse credit, will nt be cvered even thugh they believe the experience will be useful in their studies. In such cases students can request that their Curse Supervisrs discuss the issues with the Insurance Officer. Cver may be extended if the circumstances warrant. IMPORTANT Students will nt be granted liability insurance prtectins if they receive remuneratin directly r indirectly frm wrk experience prviders. This restrictin des nt apply t bna fide schlarship payments administered by the University. Hwever, any arrangement whereby a hst emplyer effectively cntracts fr services but shifts the insurance respnsibilities back t the student r the University must be carefully scrutinised. Student Persnal Accident Prvides benefits t students wh suffer accidental injuries while engaged in activities assciated with their studies at the University. This prvides a safety net cver fr enrlled students suffering accidental injury while engaged in University activities including wrk experience placements and sprting club activities. Examples f benefits are: Weekly payments fr lss f incme ($300 per week maximum) and nn Medicare related medical benefits e.g. physitherapy, chirpractic, ambulance that are nt therwise recverable frm a private health fund. Hst institutins ccasinally request cnfirmatin that the University has a Persnal Accident cver fr its students. Cntact the Insurance Officer if a certificate is required. Imprtant Matters Medicare related payments Cmmnwealth legislatin prhibits general insurers frm paying any benefits fr which there is a Medicare entitlement including any gaps. This means that students may incur nn refundable expenses fr medical, hspital, x ray etc accunts. Wrkers Cmpensatin There is a cmmn miscnceptin that students injured in a wrkplace while n wrk experience are entitled t wrkers cmpensatin benefits. That is nt the case and the Persnal Accident benefits are much less than thse available under wrkers cmpensatin. Claims Enrlled students wh suffer accidental injury while undertaking University authrised activities and feel they might like t make a claim can cntact the Student Supprt Services Office within the Edith Cwan Campus Cmmunity Services fr assistance. 22
