1. Stockholm University History The initiative for the formation of Stockholm University was taken by the Stockholm City Council. The process was completed after a decision in December 1865 regarding the establishment of a fund and a committee to "establish a higher education institution in the capital". The nine members of the Committee were respected and prominent citizens whose work have helped the evolution of science and society. The next important step was taken in October 1869, when the Stockholm University College Association was established. Several members of the committee became members of the association - including Professor Pehr Henrik Malmsten. The association's mission was to establish a university in Stockholm and would "not be dissolved until college came into being and its future could be secured." The memorandum of the Stockholm University College were adopted in May 1877, and in the autumn semester of the following year, actual operations began. Photo: Eva Dalin In 1878, the university college Stockholms högskola started its operations with a series of lectures on natural sciences, open to curious citizens (a tradition still upheld by yearly publicly open lectures). Notable in the university's early history is the appointment of Sofia Kovalevskaya to hold a chair in mathematics department in 1889, making her the third female professor in Europe. In 1904 the college became an official degree granting institution. In 1960, the college was granted university status, becoming Sweden's fourth state university. The university premises were situated in central Stockholm at Observatorielunden but increased enrolment resulted in a lack of space, which required the university campus to be shifted to a bigger facility. Since 1970 most of the university operations are pursued at the main campus at Frescati north of the city center. 1

From the station to the University Take the red line underground train with direction Mörby Centrum and get off at the stop called Universitetet. When you arrive, the map below will guide you to Geovetenskapens hus or Aula Magna. The T on the left marks the arrival point of the Tunnelbana (underground). Geovetenskapens hus, Wednesday 20 th -Thursday 21 th The Geo-Science Building (Geovetenskapens hus), is located about 2 minutes walk from the underground station. The ALTE-conference will be held on the second floor, use the staircase to the left when you enter the building or look for the conference staff or ALTE-signs. Conference staff T-shirts Aula Magna, Friday 22 nd Aula Magna is located about a minute walk from the underground. History Aula Magna was designed by architect Ralph Erskine (1914-2005), together with Lars Wilson, and inaugurated in 1997. This came to be the last building that Erskine created for the campus area. In gratitude for his work, Erskine was awarded the University Gold Medal in 1997. Photo: Helle Ambren Photo: commons.wikimedia.org Aula Magna is seven floors tall, three of which are blasted into the rock. Towards the north east, where the main entrance is, it gives a low and small-scale impression, and the generous foyer appears behind the glass façade. The building rises to its full height on the south west side. By dividing the facade into many volumes of different sizes, structures and heights, Erskine managed to shape this closed part in an interesting way. The façade is made of patterned bricks of shifting textures and different shades of red, yellow and brown. Erskine s typical solar reflectors, which let daylight into the auditorium via skylights, can be seen from far away. What is here today Besides the big auditorium, Aula Magna houses a number of group and seminar rooms, a gallery and study spaces. Fun facts In the construction of Aula Magna, high requirements were placed on good sound insulation and acoustics. This has resulted in, for example, that a speaker can stand on stage and speak without a microphone to 1,200 listeners. In December each year, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences organises the traditional Nobel lectures here with different laureates (su.se). 3

3. Public Transportation Transportation in Stockholm via bus and underground Stockholm Public Transport, SL, is responsible for buses, underground trains, commuter trains, trams and certain ferry lines in Greater Stockholm. The underground is the easiest way to get around town. The city is divided into three zones, and zone tickets are good for several trips within 75 to 120 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at SL Centers, underground platform barriers, newsagent kiosks (Pressbyrån), via SMS or via the SL app. It's not possible to pay cash for tickets on board buses in Stockholm. Photo: commons.wikiedia.org Prepaid cards are the best alternative for those making few trips. It's also possible to buy 24, 72 hour or 7-day cards, which allow free travel in all zones during the validity period. Another alternative is the Stockholm Card, which allows free travel and free entry to more than 75 museums and attractions in the city. Stockholm Cards are valid for 48, 72 or 120 hours. A trip on the number 69 bus or number 7 tram that go out to Djurgården is a superb way to discover Stockholm. The tram connects you with major attractions like Skansen and the Vasa Museum. Stockholmers are always heedful of their beautiful surroundings, and this has led to many inner city buses running on eco-friendly fuels such as ethanol. The Stockholm underground is also known as the world s longest art gallery as so many of its stations are adorned with the works of different artists. SL Access credit ("reskassa") Prices 1-7 day tickets 7-days: 300 SEK 3 days / 72h: 230 SEK 1 day / 24 h: 115 SEK Please note! You cannot purchase a ticket on board the buses. It is your responsibility as a passenger to ensure that you have a valid ticket. Failure to show on demand a valid ticket will render a penalty fare of SEK1,200. You can add credit to an SL Access card and use that credit for pay as you go zone tickets. The minimum credit to add is 100 SEK and you can add up to 1000 SEK at a time. Credit is called "reskassa" in Swedish and you can fill up credit at SL Access vending machines, at SL Center, and at ticket barriers in the Metro and at commuter rail stations. 1 zone: SEK 25 2 zones: SEK 37,50 3 zones: SEK 50 Most likely you will only be travelling through one zone since the whole of central Stockholm, 5 including Stockholm University is within zone A.

Timetables for the underground and buses You can always look up a specific time on the internet: http://sl.se/en/. There you will see this box where you can easily fill in your origin and your destination (even street names will work). In the second step you can choose a time and so on. To go from Östermalmstorg to Universitetet takes about 6 minutes. The Underground System (Tunnelbana) Stockholm University Photo: commons.wikiedia.org 6
