SECTION 1: GENERAL INFORMATION Welcome The Business Enterprise Centre (BEC), Faculty of Business at NMIT, Preston campus is offering the Certificate in Work Health and Safety in 2012 in partnership with the Recruiting and Consulting Services Association of Australia and New Zealand (RCSA) and endorsed by the FCB Group. This course is designed to fulfil the needs of those who require recognition of current industry knowledge and skills or those who desire a career in the on -hired recruitment industry. It is suitable for staff responsible for OH&S, those conducting pre placement assessment, branch and operations managers. NMIT offers a diverse range of innovative, hands-on VET and Higher Education programs to equip you with the knowledge and skills to excel in an evolving and challenging marketplace. NMIT courses are designed and developed with industry participation to provide you with improved employment outcomes. Throughout 2011 NMIT offered approximately 550 nationally recognised Certificate, Diploma and three year specialist bachelor degrees. So it is no surprise that we have had in excess of 67,500 enrolments. Qualification To attain the Certificate in Work Health and Safety participants are required to all assessments. The Certificate in Work Health and Safety accrues the 25 points required to qualify for the Recruitment and Consulting Services Association s (RCSA) Accredited Recruitment Professional status. Pathways After achieving the Certificate in Work Health and Safety Risk Management participants may undertake the BSB41407 Certificate IV Occupational Health and Safety Special Note: Before pursuing above qualification participants must satisfy the requirements of: BSBOHS403B Identify hazards and assess OHS risks BSBOHS404B Contribute to the implementation of strategies to control OHS risk BSBOHS401B Contribute to the implementation of a systematic approach to managing OHS BSBOHS408A Assist with compliance with OHS and other relevant laws Delivery This program will be delivered flexibly using a combination of: Timetable Self-paced activities Mentoring by an industry expert 1 on 1 training and mentoring where applicable Unit Content Week OHS compliance & other relevant laws Course Commencement Activity Discussion Thread in the Online Learning Environment 1-5 OHS Legislation and other regulations Prosecution trends and applying knowledge to meet regulatory expectations. Student Support Services Libraries NMIT has libraries located at each of its six campuses - Collingwood, Epping, Fairfield, Greensborough, Heidelberg & Preston. The libraries hold a combined total of approximately 100,000 items. Access to electronic resources - full text articles and e-books complement these hard copy and audio-visual materials. Computer access is available using the computers located at all campus libraries. These computers are equipped with Microsoft Office products and Internet Explorer. Printing, photocopying and scanning facilities are also available. Student Counselling Qualified staff are available to discuss issues students have which may be interfering in their course. The service is provided free of charge to students. Services include: Personal and crisis counselling Career and course advice Group programs on a range of issues Financial advice Referral to a range of community agencies and resources Disability Support Students with disabilities are not disadvantaged at NMIT. Support is available for students whose learning is affected by physical, intellectual, sensory, psychiatric or neurological disabilities or chronic medical conditions. This support may include equipment loans, adaptive technology, notetakers, tutors, signing interpreters and course materials provided in alternative formats. Availability of certain support services is subject to funding. Privacy NMIT collects personal information from students at enrolment, during the course of their studies and when they access other NMIT services. The information that is collected is treated confidentially. Disclosure of relevant information is only made to approved authorities or where the student gives permission. As part of NMIT Quality procedures, facilitators are required to collect samples of student work. Please be aware that if you withdraw from the program, a handling fee of 25% is required up to and including 5 days prior to the date of commencement. No refund of any fees paid is possible after this time. Withdrawals must be applied for in writing. SECTION 2: ASSESSMENT Strategy A range of assessment methods will be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. Detailed information regarding assessment projects, criteria, skills recognition and options will be provided to participants at course commencement. Context of Assessment All assessment activities will relate to a real or a simulated workplace environment. Allowable Adjustments All evidence gathered will be assessed according to the rules of evidence and the Evidence Checklist for each unit or section of the course. In addition, reasonable adjustments may be negotiated for participants with disability, gender, age, cultural or language requirements. SECTION 3: SKILLS RECOGNITION Skills recognition is the overarching term given to the recognition of skills and knowledge gained through formal and informal training gained by the applicant. It acknowledges previous learning and current competence from a participant s relevant life, work experience, formal education and/or professional development. Skills Recognition should be considered and applied for prior to commencement of a course so as unnecessary training does not occur. In order to apply for Skills Recognition you will need to self-assess your skills and knowledge and provide a portfolio of relevant evidence to support your application. Evidence may include: examples of work/work records training you have undertaken assessments of current skills/current knowledge photographs, videos, letters and reports relevant credentials such as awards, certificates, statements of attainment and qualifications employer references letters from clients or members of work teams copy of current resume including referees On completion of the skills recognition process, units and/or areas that require further training will be identified. To complete the qualification participants will then be required to attend scheduled classes.
