For example, you can connect to your office computer from home and work with files, programs, and resources as though you were in front of your computer at work. Hardware and operating system recommendations Windows XP Professional installed on your office computer, or whichever computer you plan to operate remotely. This computer is known as the host. A remote computer running Windows XP or a more recent version of Windows. The connection can also be made from Mac OS 10.4.9 or later. This computer is known as the client and must have the Remote Desktop Connection client software installed. A connection to the Internet. A broadband Internet connection improves performance, but it is not necessary because Remote Desktop transfers only the minimal data (such as display data and keyboard data) to remotely control your host computer. Therefore, even low bandwidth Internet connections allow you to remotely control your office computer. A Yale VPN connection is required prior to establishing remote connections to computers on the Yale campus network. Your Macintosh computer must meet the following minimum requirements: Processor: Macintosh PowerPC or Intel. Operating System: Mac OS X version 10.2.8 or later. Memory: 128 MB of RAM. Hard disk*: 3 MB of available hard disk space temporarily required to complete installation; after installation, 1.1 MB of hard disk space. Network: Connection to a local area network, either directly or via a modem capable of 28.8 Kbps or higher. Internet Access: Internet connection through either an Internet service provider (ISP) or a network. Connection to Yale. * The hard disk should be in Mac OS Extended (HFS+) format, the default format for Mac. Microsoft does not currently support running Remote Desktop Connection from a hard disk that is in another format. To determine the format of your hard disk, from the Apple menu, click About This Mac, and then click More Info. Tip: If you're not sure whether your computer meets these requirements, you can display information about your computer by using the Apple System Profiler program included with Mac OSX. Enabling the Windows workstation to accept remote connections You must first enable the Remote Desktop feature on your office Windows computer so you can control it remotely from another computer. You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to enable Remote Desktop on your Windows XP Professional-based computer. If you do not have Administrator access rights to your computer, contact your IT Support Technician. 1. Right click My Computer and go to Properties. 2. Click the Remote tab from the System Properties window. 3. Check Allow users to connect remotely to this computer checkbox. If you are using a firewall, this connection must be allowed to pass through, see individual help files within the firewall program for instructions. 4. Click Select Remote Users button. 5. Verify your Yale NetID has access listed above the Add Remove buttons. By default, the user that enables Remote Desktop is the user that has access to logon remotely. 6. In the area Enter the object names to select you can add users in the format of Yale\NetID and click the Check Names button for Windows to verify that the username is correct. 7. Click OK when done. 8. Next, you will need to the IP address of this computer. You will need this information to establish the remote connect to this computer later. a. Click the Start menu and choose Run. b. Type cmd in the Open: text box c. Type ipconfig at the command prompt and it will list your computer s IP Address. Write the IP Address down. Using Remote Desktop Connection software 1. From the Applications folder double click Remote Desktop Connection. 2. Enter the IP address written down from the ipconfig step above. Click the Connect button. 3. When asked Do you want to connect anyway? Click the Connect button to continue. 4. Enter your Yale NetID and password and click OK.
