1 Dealing with Remote Desktops in the ITT environment Date: April 11, 2007 Author: Boris Version: 1.1 Case: You have a Windows XP machine and want to start a remote desktop session to another PC. (e.g. a meetpc ) Note: - in the remote desktop terminology we distinguish the Client-part and the Server-part. A Windows or Linux PC can act both as client or as server. - This article will be extended with MAC specific configuration settings -> asap - This article is mentioned for people who are entitled to use Remote Desktop (ask your manager/fim for more information) Procedure starting RDP-client on an Installed Windows Desktop Procedure starting RDP-client on a Windows Managed Desktop Procedure starting VNC-client on a Windows Desktop Procedure accessing your Windows PC from home Procedure accessing your Linux PC from home Preparing the Windows Desktop for acting as RDP-Server << Especially for WPS employees Procedure starting RDP-client on an Installed Windows Desktop Select Run from the start menu.

2 Information: In the near future we will replace the RDP icon back in the accessories map. But for now on, starting from the run menu works well either. Type: mstsc (stands for Microsoft Terminal Server Console) Use the credentials from your remote machine. (please do not contact the Service Desk if your remote connection does not work. First contact the administrator from the remote machine if things are not working.)

3 Procedure starting RDP-client on a Windows Managed Desktop Right click your mouse on the desktop. Now select New Shortcut. Some desktops still lacks the run command. We are providing every client a run command in the near future. But for now on you can use this procedure. Type mstc Give your shortcut a recognizable name. e.g. Remote Desktop.

4 Information: You ll see the icon appear on your desktop. Click the icon Use the credentials from your remote machine. (please do not contact the Service Desk if your remote connection does not work. First contact the administrator from the remote machine if things are not working.)

5 Procedure starting VNC-client on a Windows Desktop (note the enabling of the remote administration on the Linux machine) Information: Make sure you have installed TightVNC from the software portal. Start VNC Now you re able to start a VNC connection to a remote host. (e.g. a Linux machine) Information: Make sure your Linux machine is capable of handling remote administration calls. Depicted is the YAST control center from a Linux machine. Select Remote Administration. (this works with vnc) Information: Enable Remote Administration on the Linux machine. Now remote administration from a Windows machine is possible. Information: Type the servername and portnumber.

6 Procedure VNC on a Linux Managed Desktop Same procedure as an installed desktop. Information: Now you re able to logon and use Linux as you were behind the console.

7 Procedure accessing your Windows PC from home Note: home can of course be any place with internet access. Before you leave for home please write down the name of your workstation. The name of your workstation starts with TUD<number> A nametag (as depicted) is tagged on the front of your PC. Laptops do have the tag on the backside of the keyboard. Start a Internet Explorer and Surf to weblogin.tudelft.nl In the Log in box type your NetId and corresponding password. (the one you also use at work behind your normal desktop or laptop) When logged on you will see the applications you are entitled to use. (please contact the service desk if not. Please mention missing apps in Citrix server )

8 This is a Citrix client security setting. Citrix is a trustworthy and can therefore be given full access. When not being bugged again next session please select as depicted. OK, this is the interesting part. Your desktop at work does have a name. (starts with TUD ) This name should be entered in the computer box with the extension.tudelft.net The username is the same as your NetID. The domain is DASTUD.

9 Use display settings as depicted. If you want to print on the printer at work, please select the check box printers. If you want to use your home-pc s hard disks at your work desktop pc, please select the check box Disk drives Serial ports are not supported! USB ports are not (yet) supported!

10 For better performance use Broadband. Default is modem 28k8. It doesn t increase speed significantly, but every little helps Now press connect. You ll see your own desktop. Depicted a property windows that actually shows the right computer name (evidence ;-) You can now work as usual. When finished working you can choose either to logoff or disconnect.

11 Procedure accessing your Linux PC from home Accessing your Linux desktop is similarly as the Windows desktop. Connect to weblogin.tudelft.nl and choose the TightVNC icon. You will see this icon Now fill in the computername. Just as the Windows equivalent the name starts with TUD. (in my example the machine name is suusje) When connecting was successful you can logon to the desktop manager and work as usual. (users who only want to use putty, can login to the weblogin desktop and choose putty from the programs menu)

12 Preparing the Windows Desktop for acting as RDP-Server When choosing properties from the computer icon as a regular user, you ll see that the checkbox for enabling RDP is greyed out. This is because you are a regular user on a managed desktop. People with a laptop or installed desktop will find a non-greyed out checkbox. Someone from WPS can enable this item for you. Please note that not everyone is entitled to use the Remote Desktop feature. Please contact your manager/fim if you want to use this feature. Info for WPS employees: In the windows folder you ll find sysdm.cpl The easiest way to get there is to use a search.

13 Right click the sysdm.cpl and select Run as.. Fill in your own WPS Netid credentials to start the system properties with elevated rights. Now select Allow users to connect remotely to this computer Select WHO may access this computer by clicking the button Select Remote Users.. Make sure that the location is TUDELFT.NET Now enter the objectnames for those who may access this machine. Make sure you double-check if you got them all included.

14 END OF INSTRUCTION You ll see that the person with NetID bdgpvanes is entitled to connect remotely to this pc.
