TSU Graduate Psychlgy and Cunseling Prgrams 5 Prgram Optins PART 1: ADMISSIONS AND INFORMATION FOR THE STUDENT Students may chse frm different ptins within the master s degree prgrams. Reference shuld be made t the university catalg and the advising guide sheets (available frm the department ffice, department website, r an advisr) fr specific cursewrk requirements within each f these ptins. Each student must declare an ptin at the time full admissin status is btained and a degree plan is filed. Students will nly graduate with a master s degree under ne prgram ptin. Students may take curses nt listed n their degree plans with the understanding that these curses are electives and may nt satisfy requirements fr graduatin in sme prgram ptins. Available ptins include: Fr the Cunseling (M.Ed.) prgram: Schl Cunseling (with r withut LPC). Fr the Cunseling Psychlgy (M.S.) prgram: Licensed Prfessinal Cunselr and Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. Fr the Educatinal Psychlgy (M.S.) prgram: Licensed Psychlgical Assciate Fr the Specialist in Schl Psychlgy (S.S.P.) prgram: Licensed Specialist in Schl Psychlgy. Nn-degree seeking certificatin prgrams include: Schl Cunseling and Clinical Mental Health Cunselr. Statement f Infrmed Cnsent The graduate degree prgrams include labratry and field experiences in cunseling r psychlgy. These curses will include practicing cunseling, therapy, and assessment skills with student peers, being interviewed by cunseling r psychlgy peers, and practicing newly-acquired and mre advanced skills with actual clients at field sites. Imprtant cmpnents f student evaluatin will include receptivity t the giving and receiving f feedback (frm peers, university instructrs, and site supervisrs) and ability t integrate such feedback int the student s cunseling, therapy, and assessment behavirs. Feedback will include supervisr bservatins (frm curse instructrs, prgram faculty, and site supervisrs) f any limitatins in cunseling, therapy, and assessment skills, prfessinal practice, and persnal qualities and behavirs which may inhibit the student s therapeutic abilities. Feedback (ral and/r written) will cme in the classrm and lab settings, as well as in grup and individual supervisin settings. Additinal meetings with instructr and/r field supervisr may be necessary. Prgressin thrugh field experiences will depend upn a frmative evaluatin by the instructr that the student has acquired the skills necessary fr the next level. Due t the nature f cunseling and psychlgy, and the faculty s respnsibility t educate effective cunselrs and therapists, students may be encuraged t participate in experiential activities (including grup cunseling as well as attending and paying fr cunseling as an utside class activity). Signing a cnfidentiality agreement, which is included in the appendix f this student handbk, prtects student s rights with regard t self-disclsure. Students are subject t the cnditins f the department s retentin prcedure included later in this guide. Admissin The student must be admitted t the Cllege f Graduate Studies. The student must meet admissin requirements as specified in the Applicatin fr Admissin t the Graduate Psychlgy and Cunseling Prgram. Applicatin frms may be btained frm the department ffice r website.

TSU Graduate Psychlgy and Cunseling Prgrams 6 The student must return the cmpleted applicatin fr admissin and all dcumentatin accrding t the fllwing schedule: Fall Semester July 1 Spring Semester Nvember 1 Summer Semester April 1 A training cmmittee cnsisting f members f the graduate cunseling r psychlgy faculty will cnvene every semester t review applicatins and make recmmendatins fr acceptance r rejectin f individual applicants. The fllwing factrs cntribute t the decisin f the admissins cmmittee: graduate admissin status perfrmance in previus undergraduate and graduate cursewrk Additinal cursewrk may be required if a student s undergraduate degree is nt in a field that is clsely related t cunseling r psychlgy. Students seeking ne f the master f science degrees must have 9 semester hurs in psychlgy, with at least 6 f these hurs cming frm upper level (junir/senir) cursewrk. A bachelr s degree in Psychlgy is nt required. All students failing t meet full admissin requirements will be placed n cnditinal admissin status until the first 12 semester hurs are cmpleted. Students must enrll in cursewrk apprved by a graduate advisr and receive a grade pint average (GPA) f 3.25 r abve n the specified cursewrk. Students will nt be permitted t enrll in additinal cursewrk in cunseling (CNSL), cunseling psychlgy (CPSY), r psychlgy (PSY) beynd the first 12 semester hurs if nt fully admitted t the prgram. If denied full admissin, students may re-apply fr admissin after successful remediatin. Students are respnsible fr this remediatin fllwing input frm the graduate advisr and/r admissins cmmittee. Students admissin status will be reviewed cntinuusly thrughut their curse f study regarding their ability t develp cmpetence in cunseling, therapy, and/r assessment skills. Ethical Standards All students are expected t understand and practice the ethical cdes and standards f cnduct f the American Cunseling Assciatin (ACA), the American Psychlgical Assciatin (APA), r the Natinal Assciatin f Schl Psychlgists, as well as the standards f cnduct fr students at Tarletn State University (TSU). Vilatins f prfessinal ethical standards r University rules culd deem a student unfit t cntinue in the prgram. Students are expected t peridically review the ethical standards t insure cntinued understanding and practice. Advisrs and faculty members at TSU have an bligatin t respnd when students are in vilatin f prfessinal ethical standards r University rules f cnduct. Faculty Advisement Students are strngly encurage t seek advising by faculty advisrs regarding cursewrk, certificatin and licensing requirements, prgram plicies and prcedures, requesting changes in degree plans, and assistance with ther educatinal r career needs. A faculty advisr is assigned t each student accrding t area f emphasis and degree plan. Students may cnsult with any faculty member but are urged t wrk with their assigned advisr as

Advising is a cntinuus prcess, and faculty advisrs are assigned many students t advise in additin t their ther wrklad requirements, such as teaching, service, and research. Students shuld demnstrate respect fr the faculty advisr's time by setting appintments and being prepared fr their appintments as much as pssible. Student's Respnsibilities Students have a respnsibility fr their learning. Other respnsibilities include: Reading the TSU Catalg each year t determine if changes impact them Reading and adhering t prfessinal ethical standards Meeting registratin and payment deadlines Participating in activities and prjects, internal r external t the University, that will enhance their learning experience Fllwing the degree plan utline as clsely as pssible and being aware f all curse prerequisites Preparing fr curses by making arrangements t attend regularly scheduled classes, allwing fr adequate study time, cmpleting assignments n a timely basis, and taking the final exam as scheduled Identifying skill strengths and wrking tward develpment f skills that need imprvement Asking questins t btain infrmatin regarding tpics they d nt understand Acquiring prfessinal liability insurance prir t taking clinical practicums and internships Preparing fr the site-based practicums and internships in advance f the semester in which they will be taken, including submitting applicatin frms by psted deadlines Selecting and develping a theretical rientatin Applying fr candidacy upn cmpletin f selected cre curses Taking the cre examinatin within the required time perid Signing up and taking the cmprehensive examinatin during the final semester f cursewrk Meeting graduatin requirements and deadlines Cllecting and maintaining dcumentatin f practicum and internship hurs which will be needed when applying fr certificatin r licensure Becming identified with the prfessinal cmmunity (e.g., participating in prfessinal activities and/r jining a prfessinal assciatin such as APA, ACA, Natinal Assciatin f Schl Psychlgists [NASP], Texas Cunseling Assciatin [TCA], etc.) see Part 4 f this handbk. Degree Plan Students must have full admissin t file a degree plan in the department. Once full admissin status is granted, a student shuld cntact his/her graduate advisr t develp a degree plan as sn as pssible. The student, graduate advisr, department head, and graduate studies dean sign the student s departmental degree plan. The graduate advisr will assist the student with the selectin f curses related t the prgram ptin chsen. Nte: Students wh are n nn-degree seeking status are nt in a degree prgram and are nt eligible t file a degree plan. Care must be taken t select curses n the degree plan that als meet requirements fr special credentials the student may be seeking such as licensure r certificatin. See the Certificatin and Licensure sectin f this guide fr mre details. Prgram Standards PART 2: PROGRAM PERFORMANCE STANDARDS Students must maintain high schlastic standards and develp skills necessary t wrk with peple with diverse needs. Students are expected t demnstrate emtinal and mental fitness in their prfessinal fields and t cnfrm t the cde f ethics f relevant prfessinal assciatins and the state f Texas. A student's acceptance in the Cunseling, Cunseling Psychlgy, Schl Psychlgy, r Educatinal

TSU Graduate Psychlgy and Cunseling Prgrams 8 Psychlgy prgrams des nt guarantee prfessinal fitness that is required t remain in the prgram. Academic Appeal Plicy An individual curse grade may be changed when the invlved faculty member certifies t the university registrar that an errr was made in cmputing the riginal grade. The Psychlgy and Cunseling Department Head and the Dean f the Cllege f Educatin must apprve the grade. Students wh wish t appeal a grade must first discuss the grade with the instructr. If n reslutin is reached, the student may appeal the grade t the department head. If n satisfactry cnclusin can be reached at this level, the student may appeal t the cllege dean. The dean's decisin is final. Student Retentin Plicy Students must earn an average grade f B r better in the required curses fr the degree. If the cumulative graduate schl grade pint average (GPA) falls belw 3.0 during any semester f enrllment at TSU, the student will be placed n academic suspensin. In the next semester f enrllment the student must raise his/her cumulative graduate schl GPA t 3.0 r abve and maintain a 3.0 average fr the remainder f her r his cursewrk r be permanently suspended frm the prgram and university. Evaluating Student Perfrmance Members f the prgram faculty, using their prfessinal judgment, cntinually evaluate each student s perfrmance. Students receive feedback abut their perfrmance frm faculty members, advisrs, and supervisrs. The criteria used by the faculty t make such judgments include instructr's bservatins f curse perfrmance, evaluatins f students' perfrmances in simulated practice situatins, supervisr's evaluatins f student's perfrmances in practice situatins, and the discipline's cdes f ethics. Student Review Plicy If a faculty member believes that a student is nt making satisfactry prgress r meeting prgram r university standards, that faculty member will discuss the situatin with the student. If the faculty member believes the student's perfrmance cannt imprve t acceptable standards, the faculty member may refer the student t a cmmittee f the prgram faculty, cnsisting f a minimum f three faculty members, t review the student's perfrmance. The Perfrmance Fitness Evaluatin Frm included in the Appendix will be used fr this review. Please familiarize yurself with this frm. The faculty review cmmittee will prvide the student in writing with the reasns fr nn-satisfactry prgress and will prvide the student an pprtunity t meet with the cmmittee t discuss the cncerns. After cnsidering the matter, and within 10 wrking days f meeting with the student, the cmmittee will reprt t the student and department head its recmmendatin that the student either be allwed t remain, allwed t remain with cnditins, r be remved frm the prgram. Within 10 days f the receipt f such infrmatin, the student will ntify the Head f the Psychlgy and Cunseling Department f the acceptance r appeal t the cmmittee's recmmendatin. Lack f ntificatin within this time perid is taken t mean acceptance. If the student is recmmended t stay in the prgram, the cmmittee will develp a grwth plan. If the student appeals, the department head will determine whether r nt the student remains in the prgram. The department head may r may nt meet with the student prir t the decisin and will prvide the student with a final decisin in writing. A student wh is dissatisfied with the department head's decisin may appeal t the Dean f the Cllege f Educatin. Fr an appeal t be cnsidered, the student must submit a written ntice fr an appeal t the dean within 10 wrking days f receiving the decisin frm the department head. The dean will cnsider the matter based n results cmpiled by the department head and ntify the student f his/her decisin within 10 wrking days f receipt f the appeal. The dean's decisin is final.

TSU Graduate Psychlgy and Cunseling Prgrams 9 Prfessinal Endrsement Plicy The faculty will nt endrse any graduate frm the psychlgy and cunseling prgrams fr a license r certificatin fr which the graduate has nt been trained. Admissin t Candidacy Admissin t candidacy is a requirement fr all degree-seeking students. The requirements fr candidacy are: 1.Have a degree plan n file in the Graduate Schl and Department 2.Be fully admitted t the Cunseling, Cunseling Psychlgy, Schl Psychlgy, r Educatinal Psychlgy prgram and Graduate Schl 3.Have a 3.0 GPA and nt be n academic prbatin 4.Shw satisfactry prgress and acceptable standards f cnduct 5.Submit an essay regarding the student s learning as a result f taking the Sixteen Persnality Factr (16PF) questinnaire while enrlled in CPSY 550 The essay must be intrspective and utilize 16PF interpretatin reprt infrmatin t address the student s (1) reactin t the experience, (2) identified strengths, and (3) identified areas fr grwth as they relate t becming a prfessinal cunselr, psychlgist, r therapist. Cmprehensive Examinatin Every candidate fr the M.Ed., M.S., r S.S.P. degree must apply fr and pass a cmprehensive examinatin. The examinatin is taken in the final semester f graduate cursewrk listed n the student's degree plan, including all internship and practicum curses. While the scheduled date is usually psted early in the semester, the student is ultimately respnsible fr cntacting the prgram ffice fr infrmatin regarding the examinatin and fr making arrangements t take it as scheduled. Examinatin dates are typically: Graduating Semester Cmprehensive Examinatin Applicatin Deadline Fall 2 nd Saturday in Nvember Octber 1 st Spring 2 nd Saturday in April March 1 st Summer Sessins I & II 2 nd Saturday in July June 1 st The examinatin cnsists f tw parts: an bjective item examinatin and an essay examinatin. The bjective item examinatin cnsists f 100 multiple-chice questins related t the student's degree plan. There are different examinatins fr different degree plans. The essay examinatin cnsists f fur essay questins written by the student's advisry cmmittee and related t the graduate cursewrk taken by the student. The chair f the advisry cmmittee submits tw essay questins and the ther tw members f the advisry cmmittee each submit ne essay questin. A scre f 70% must be btained n each part f the cmprehensive examinatin t pass it. Any part f the examinatin that is nt passed at the 70% cutff must be retaken in the next semester it is administered. Students wh d nt receive a passing scre the secnd time are referred t their advisry cmmittee. An individual remediatin plan will be cnsidered. N student may take the failed prtin mre than three times. Students wh are unable t successfully cmplete the required cmprehensive exams will be dismissed frm the prgram. Graduatin Students must register t graduate by the deadline listed in the current catalg r class schedule. All university requirements regarding the final prcedures related t the degree must be fllwed. If curses

The practicum/internship directr may deny placement f a student at a particular site if the site is deemed inapprpriate fr meeting the educatinal needs f the student. It is highly recmmended that students seeking sites meet with the practicum/internship directr early in the semester f the applicatin deadline t get pre-apprval f the site. This will help t insure that adequate time is available t find an alternate site in case a site is nt apprved. Liability Insurance All students wh register fr a practicum r internship curse are required t shw prf f pssessing student cunseling/therapy liability insurance. In sme instances, students may be required t prvide health certificates r evidence f immunizatin t wrk with clients. Since it is the respnsibility f students t prepare themselves fr curse requirements, liability insurance must be purchased several weeks prir t taking a practicum r internship curse t avid delays in wrking with clients. PART 5: CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE All graduate degree plan ptins with the exceptin f the M.S. Educatinal Psychlgy Experimental Psychlgy ptin lead t eligibility fr prfessinal certificatin r licensure. Each degree ptin is primarily designed fr a particular credential, althugh sme degree ptins may allw fr mre than ne credential if elective cursewrk is chsen carefully. Certificatin r licensure is generally crdinated between the student and the bard issuing the desired credential. Prgram faculty and the department usually prvide dcumentatin and verificatin f training experiences t bards after the student has initiated the credentialing prcess. Fr schl cunseling certificatin, students initiate the prcess by cntacting the certificatin ffice at TSU. Fr prfessinal cunseling licensure (LPC), marriage and family therapy licensure (LMFT), psychlgical assciate licensure (LPA), and schl psychlgist licensure (LSSP), students initiate the prcess by cntacting the apprpriate licensing bard. Fr natinal cunselr certificatin (NCC) and clinical mental health cunseling certificatin (CMHC), students initiate the prcess by cntacting the apprpriate certificatin bard.
