Introduction The booklet will show users how the Virtual Owl website is designed to provide you with a resource for downloading a virtual desktop tool on your personal computer or laptop. A virtual desktop is a simulated user interface with a collection of software programs that is located on a remote computer. By connecting your computer to the virtual desktop, you have access to programs that you might not have installed on your computer. The tool for connecting your computer to the virtual desktop is VMware View. Virtual Owl To access to the Virtual Owl Lab, you must first download the application, VMware View. This application can be installed on any computer with internet access. The following instructions will guide users through the download and installation of VMware View for the Windows PC. Download Instructions 1. Open a new web browser window. (This example uses Mozilla Firefox, See Figure 1) 2. Enter the following web address in your address bar: http://virtualowl.kennesaw.edu. (See Figure 1) Figure 1 - Virtual Owl URL. 3. The Virtual Owl site will appear. Click Client Downloads from the set of 4 icons on the right (See Figure 2). Figure 2 - The Virtual Owl Homepage. Page 5 of 16
4. Under VMware View Client for Windows, click the Download the Virtual Owl Desktop Client for Windows 7 or Higher (32 and 64 bit) link (See Figure 3). Figure 3 - VMWare View Client for Windows. 5. Click the Save File button (See Figure 4). Note: The download the file will appear different in other web browsers. Figure 4 - Save File in Download Window. 6. Installation Instructions 1. Double-click on the VMware-viewclient.exe icon from your Downloads window. 2. The VMware Horizon Client Setup window will open. Click the Next button (See Figure 6). Figure 6 - VMware Horizon Client Setup. 3. The End-User License Agreement dialog box will open. Check the, I accept the terms in the License Agreement box and click the Next button (See Figure 7). 4. The Network protocol configuration dialog box will open. Select IPv4 and click the Next button (See Figure 8). Figure 8 - Network Protocol Configuration. 5. The Custom Setup dialog box will open. Click the Next button (See Figure 9). Figure 9 - Custom Setup. Page 8 of 16
6. The Default Server dialog box will open. The default server, ksuview.kennesaw.edu, should be filled in automatically. Click the Next button (See Figure 10). Figure 10 - Default Server. 7. 8. The Configure Shortcuts dialog box will open. Click the Next button (See Figure 12). Figure 12 - Configure Shortcuts. 9. The VMWare Horizon Client is now ready for install. Click the Install button (See Figure 13). Figure 13 - Ready to Install VMware Horizon Client. Page 10 of 16
10. The Completed the VMware Horizon Client Setup Wizard dialog box will show when installation is complete. Click the Finish button (See Figure 14). When your machine restarts, you will have a new desktop icon for VMware View. Page 11 of 16
Login Instructions 1. Locate the VMware Horizon Client icon on your desktop and double-click to open (See Figure 16). Figure 16 - VMware Horizon Client. 2. The VMware Horizon Client window will appear. Double-click ksuview.kennesaw.edu to open (See Figure 17). Figure 17 - VMware Horizon Client. Page 12 of 16
3. You will be prompted to enter your User name and Password (See Figure 18). a. Enter your NetID (See Figure 18). b. Enter your NetID password (See Figure 18). c. Click the Login button (See Figure 18). Figure 18 - VMware Login. 4. A list of available Virtual Labs will appear. Double-click the lab you need (e.g. KSU-D2L- BrightSpace) (See Figure 19). 5. You will see The Connection Server is preparing the desktop window (See Figure 20). Figure 20 - The Connection Server is Preparing the Desktop. 6. Your virtual desktop will load in full-screen mode. You will see the following black bar at the top of your screen (See Figure 21). Figure 21 - VMware Menu Bar. 7. You may begin your work in the VMware Horizon Client desktop. Page 14 of 16
Accessing Applications After you log into your Virtual Owl desktop, you can access the programs through the Start menu. 1. Click the Start button (See Figure 22). 2. Click All Programs (See Figure 22). Figure 22 - Start Menu. 3. A list of available programs will appear. Click the desired application or application folder, such as Word 2013 to launch, and it will open. Logout Instructions 1. Once work is complete, click on the X on the top menu bar to close the connection (See Figure 23). Figure 23 - Disconnect from Virtual Owl Desktop. 2.
