1 FTP Over SSL (FTPS) Gordon State College has setup FTP Over SSL (also known as FTPS ) to allow students, faculty, and staff to access resources from our Servers from off-campus using an encrypted connection. This service is a special type of FTP and therefore requires using software that supports FTPS. Any computer with this software and an internet connection will be able to use this service. Any FTP client that supports FTP Over SSL can be used. The instructions below will demonstrate how to install and use Core FTP LE and the Mozilla Firefox add-on named FireFTP. Choose the option that you feel is most convenient after reading the instructions for each program. Both programs are available for free on the web. Core FTP LE Installing Core FTP LE" Please note: Core FTP is only compatible with a Windows-based PC. 1. Go to the FileHippo.com Core FTP LE download page. 2. Click the Download Latest Version icon on the right hand side of the page. 3. The download will start automatically. You may need to choose Download File from the top message bar pop-up if using Internet Explorer. 4. An installer window will pop-up, asking if you wish to Run, Save, or Cancel. Choose Run. 5. Once the installer has finished downloading, it may ask you if you want to allow the program to make changes to this computer. Choose Yes.

2 6. The Core FTP LE setup program will appear. Choose Next. 7. On the following Read Me File screen, choose Next. 8. Choose the destination folder where the software will be installed (Default Recommended) and choose Next. 9. Continue to accept the defaults by pressing Next until you reach the Installation Complete screen. Once you reach this screen, choose Finish to exit the installation program. 10. Once the installation is complete, you should now see a shortcut on your desktop called Core FTP Lite. Double-click on Core FTP Lite to start the program.

3 11. A message will appear when you start the program for the first time asking you if you want to make CoreFTP your default FTP client. Just choose Cancel. 12. Another message will appear asking if you would like to use notepad.exe to edit ascii files. Choose No to continue. Step 11 and 12 will not have to be performed again when Core FTP is opened. 13. Core FTP is now installed. Continue to Setting up Core FTP LE below. Setting up Core FTP LE 1. Open the Core FTP Lite program from your desktop if you haven t already done so. 2. The Site Manager Dialog Box will appear. The Site Manager is used to keep track of servers that you connect to. Here you will create a profile to the Gordon FTP Server.

4 3. Now enter the details as shown in the image above: 1. Site Name: this can be any name you choose to identify the profile (ex. GordonFTPS). This profile will be saved automatically for future use once you connect to the server. 2. Host: eagle.gordonstate.edu 3. Username: your Gordon Network Username (ex. ts123456) 4. Password: your Gordon Network Password (case sensitive) 5. Don't save password: Check this box 6. Connection: choose AUTH TLS from the drop down box. 7. Leave the other settings to the default 4. Now choose Connect at the bottom of the dialog box. 5. When connected for the first time, a Certificate Information box will appear asking you to accept the SSL Certificate. Choose Always Accept. 6. Core FTP is now logged on and is setup to access the Gordon FTP Server. Continue to Using Core FTP LE below. Using Core FTP LE 1. Open the Core FTP Lite program from your desktop if you haven t already done so. 2. Click your Gordon FTP Profile in the Site Manager Dialog Box, enter your password in the Password field, and click on Connect. 3. The screenshot below shows the interface when you are connected to the Gordon FTP Server. The list of folders and files on the right-hand side is the Remote System (the server). The left side of the interface shows the folders and files on the Local System (your hard drive, C:).

5 Downloading Files 1. Find the files you are looking for on the Gordon FTP Server (right side) by navigating the folder structure. Double-click on a folder to access its content beneath. Searching through the FTP Server will require you sometimes to double-click on or single-click on to move up a folder. 2. Once you have located the file(s) you are searching for, you can now download the file(s) to your local hard drive. NOTE: You can choose any location on your local hard drive where you would like the file(s) downloaded to by using the same technique you used in step 4 only now you will navigate the local folders on the left side (by default, the root of C:\ is selected). 3. Download files in one of three ways: Select files and click on the Download button located in the upper left corner of the remote file list.

6 - or - Drag the files from the Gordon FTP Server (remote file list, the right side) to the local hard drive (local file list, the left side) -or - Right click on the selected file and select Download. 4. The file(s) you selected will now be transferred to your local hard drive where they can be accessed on your computer. Uploading Files 1. To upload a file to the Server, choose the location on the Gordon FTP Server (right side) where you would like the file(s) uploaded. 2. Then, select the desired file(s) in the local file list (left side). 3. Upload files in one of three ways: Select files and click on the Upload button located in the upper right corner of the remote file list. - or - Drag the files from the local hard drive (local file list, the left side) to a Gordon FTP Server folder location (remote file list, the right side) -or - Right click on the selected file and select Upload. 4. The file(s) you selected will now be transferred to the Gordon FTP Server where they can be accessed from on-campus. Mozilla Firefox FireFTP Installing FireFTP Please note: FireFTP is compatible with the Firefox browser on both Windows and Mac OS X. 1. The FireFTP add-on requires that you have Mozilla Firefox installed on your computer. If you haven t already download and install Firefox from 2. Once Firefox is installed and open on your computer screen, go to and click on the Download FireFTP link.

7 3. Firefox might display a yellow bar at the top saying that it has prevented this site from asking you to install the software on your computer. Click on the Allow button. 4. The Software Installation screen will appear. Click on Install Now. 5. The Add-ons screen will appear asking you to restart Firefox to complete your changes. Click on Restart Firefox. 6. Firefox will now restart and the FireFTP add-on will now be installed. Continue to Setting up FireFTP below. Setting up FireFTP 1. Open FireFTP within Firefox by going to Tools from the top menu bar and clicking on FireFTP. 2. Once FireFTP is open in a new tab, click on Create an account

8 3. The Account Manager Dialog Box will appear. The Account Manager is used to keep track of servers that you connect to. Here you will create a profile to the Gordon FTP Server. 4. On the Main tab, enter the details as shown in the image above: 1. Account Name: this can be any name you choose to identify the profile (ex. GordonFTPS). This profile will be saved automatically for future use once you press OK to save. 2. Host: eagle.gordonstate.edu 3. Login: your Gordon Network Username (ex. ts123456) 4. 9 5. Now choose the Connection tab within the Account Manager Dialog Box. 6. On the Connection tab, enter the details as shown in the image above: 1. Security: choose AUTH TLS (Best) from the drop down box. 2. Leave the other settings to the default 7. Choose OK at the bottom of the dialog box 8. Next, with the Gordon FTP Profile you just created now selected (ex. GordonFTPS), choose Connect next to the profile name. 9. FireFTP is now logged on and is setup to access the Gordon FTP Server. Continue to Using FireFTP below.

10 Using FireFTP 1. Open the FireFTP program within Firefox if you haven t already done so by clicking on Tools > FireFTP. 2. With your Gordon FTP Profile selected, click Connect to make the connection to the site. 3. The screenshot below shows the FireFTP interface when you are connected to the Gordon FTP Server. 4. Once you have connected, you will find that the list of folders on the right side is the Remote System (the server) and the list of folders on the left side is the Local System (your hard drive). Downloading Files 1. Find the files you are looking for on the Gordon FTP Server (right side) by navigating the folder structure. Navigate the folder tree by using the +/- nodes next to each folder to reveal or hide the folders beneath it. The content of the folder selected will appear in the split window on the left. 2. Once you have located the file(s) you are searching for, you can now download the file(s) to your local hard drive. NOTE: You can choose any location on your local hard drive where you

11 would like the file(s) downloaded to by using the same technique you used in step 1 only now you will navigate the local folders on the left-hand side. 3. To download a file, use one of three methods: Click on a file on the right side and press the green arrow pointing to the left to download a file from the Server to your local hard drive. - or - Drag the files from the Gordon FTP Server (right side) to the local hard drive (left side) -or - Right click on a file (right side) and select Download. 4. The file(s) you selected will now be transferred to your local hard drive where they can be accessed on your computer. Uploading Files 5. Then, select the file(s) you would like to upload from your local hard drive (left side). 7.
