Welcome to ALERT BINGO, a fun-flled and educatonal way to learn the fve ways to change engnes levels (Put somethng n your Mouth, Move, Touch, Look, and Lsten) as descrbed n the How Does Your Engne Run? A Leader s Gude to the Alert Program for Self-Regulaton. We assume your students are learnng about self-regulaton (how to change how alert they feel) through the Alert Program wth ts three stages: Stage One: Identfyng Engne Speeds Stage Two: Expermentng wth Methods to Change Engne Speeds Stage Three: Regulatng Engne Speeds In Stage One, your students may already have played the ALERT: GO FISH! card game or other actvtes from the Leader s Gude. Or perhaps they have been sngng songs from Test Drve: Introducng the Alert Program Through Song book and CD to learn how to dentfy ther engne speeds. Now that your students are ready to move on to Stage Two, they wll learn about sensormotor methods to change how alert they feel. Sensormotor strateges are pctured on the pcture tokens that wll be sorted under the fve ways to change engne levels. In the tradtonal Bngo game, an adult calls out numbers and chldren place tokens on ther ndvdual game cards. In ALERT BINGO, however, all Bngo cards are the same and pcture tokens are used nstead of typcal plastc tokens. CONTENTS: Three Alert Bngo Cards: Card wth llustratons (and boy n ttle) Card wth blank spaces (and dog n ttle) Card wth sensormotor descrptor words (and grl n ttle) Pcture Token Sheets (small square cards wth llustratons) GOAL OF GAME: The frst player to have the pre-determned pattern (horzontal or vertcal lne) completed on ther Bngo card wns and shouts, Bngo! 1

PRIOR TO PLAYING THE GAME FOR THE FIRST TIME: To prepare to play ths game for the frst tme, we recommend prntng the three Bngo cards and pcture tokens on cardstock or thck photo paper. Then cut out the pcture tokens and lamnate both the pcture tokens and the Bngo cards. If prntng on thcker paper s not possble, you may want to glue the pcture tokens and Bngo cards onto colored constructon paper or cardboard and then lamnate. To help teach the fve ways to change engne levels, you may want to play ths game after sngng the Fve Ways song wth your students, as descrbed n Test Drve book and CD. THE BASIC GAME: 1. Place the pcture tokens n a box or bag. Shake the contaner to shuffle the cards. 2. Gve each chld a large Bngo card (see the Choosng Whch Alert Bngo Cards to Use secton below). 3. Determne whch pattern (horzontal or vertcal lne) wll be used and explan to the chldren, for example, Ths tme you wll be the wnner f you cover squares n a sngle straght lne. For younger chldren or those wth language dffcultes, show a Bngo card wth a wnnng horzontal or a wnnng vertcal lne. 4. The frst player pcks a pcture token from the contaner. She searches her Bngo card to place the pcture token under the correct category (Mouth, Move, Touch, Look, or Lsten). She places the pcture token on the correspondng square. If she pcked a duplcate pcture token (one already coverng a square on her Bngo card), then she returns the duplcate pcture token to the contaner and her turn s over. 5. Play contnues n a clockwse drecton wth each player choosng a pcture token from the contaner and placng t on hs or her Bngo card. 6. Chldren call out, Bngo! when ther Bngo card has the pattern that was pre-determned as the wnnng pattern. The game ends when the frst chld wns. 7. Encourage dscusson about the ways to change engne levels to help chldren learn about self-regulaton. Also, don t forget chldren learn more quckly by hearng you talk about your engne (or other peers dscussng what they do for ther engnes). For example, f a chld pcks a popcorn card, the adult mght say, When I have to wrte a report, I lke to crunch on popcorn. How about you? Do you lke to use popcorn to help your engne? Or, for chldren more famlar wth ther own self-regulaton strateges, an adult mght say, Popcorn... no, I lke pckles better. They are crunchy and sour. When I was young, I used to eat pckles whle dong my homework. Pckles helped my engne to run just rght so my homework got done more quckly. What do you use to help your engne at homework tme? (See Take Fve! Stayng Alert at Home and School to fnd lsts of sensormotor strateges approprate for home and school use.) 2

CHOOSING WHICH ALERT BINGO CARDS TO USE: For frst tme players, young chldren, or those wth learnng challenges, start wth the Bngo card that has llustratons (the Bngo card wth the boy). Then you mght play a second round usng the Bngo card wth blank squares (the Bngo card wth the dog). For older chldren or those who have good readng sklls, you mght want to use the Bngo card that ncludes the sensormotor descrptor words lsted under each of the fve ways to change engne levels (the Bngo card wth the grl). You ll need to determne the best number of pcture tokens needed to play the game, dependng on the number of players. For example, when playng wth two players, you may only need to use one set of pcture tokens. For more than two players, add more sets of pcture tokens to ensure a wnner. The more sets of pcture tokens n play, the more lkely there wll be a wnner. (But the more pcture tokens n play, the more duplcates you ll have n play, also.) NOTE: When playng wth the Bngo card that has llustratons (the Bngo card wth the boy), nstruct players to turn ther pcture tokens face down on ther Bngo card as they fnd matches. Ths wll make t s easer to scan the Bngo card for a wnnng pattern. GAME VARIATIONS: To encourage chldren to expand the repertore of sensormotor optons for changng ther engnes, you mght want to ask a queston before the chld can mark hs square. For example, f a chld pcks a pcture token wth a pcture of popcorn, the adult could ask: What s another crunchy food? If the chld can answer the queston, only then does he mark hs Bngo card. If the chld does not know the answer (or has challenges wth language or word fndng dffcultes), the adult can offer two choces or rephrase wth a smplfed queston requrng only a yes or no answer. For example, the adult could ask, Is a carrot crunchy? or Is puddng crunchy? To spark creatve Alert Program thnkng by chldren and adults, extra pcture tokens can be made by wrtng words or drawng pctures of addtonal engne strateges for more ALERT BINGO fun. Rather than determnng the one pattern that wll wn (horzontal or vertcal lne), ALERT BINGO can be played wth the rule that any pattern wll wn. Ths game varaton works well for those famlar wth the tradtonal Bngo game and wnnng patterns that nclude horzontal lne, vertcal lne, T shape, four corners, etc. (Just a note: dagonal lnes are too dffcult and not recommended for ALERT BINGO.) Przes can be gven to ALERT BINGO wnners after each round or after all rounds are completed to see who attans the pre-determned patterns most often. 3

FOR LARGER GROUPS: ALERT BINGO can be played wth a caller (adult or chld). To play the game n ths manner, the caller needs one set of pcture tokens and the rest of the pcture tokens are placed n a contaner. Then each player s gven seven pcture tokens, at random, from the contaner. The seven pcture tokens are placed face up, next to the Bngo card. The object of ths game verson s for players to place all seven pcture tokens on ther Bngo cards (a vertcal or horzontal lne s not necessary to wn). You can mx and match the Bngo cards; not all players need to have the same Bngo card to play ths game verson. The Caller pcks one pcture token from the contaner and descrbes t to the group, e.g., Ths s a lemon. Each chld then looks to see f they have a pcture of a lemon n ther set of seven pcture tokens. If so, they place that pcture token on the approprate square on ther Bngo card. If playng wth the Bngo card that has llustratons, the chld places the pcture token on the square wth the same llustraton. If playng wth the Bngo card that has descrptor words, the chld places the lemon on the word sour. If playng wth the Bngo cards that have blank squares, chld places the lemon on any square under the Mouth Column. The game contnues n ths manner untl one chld has correctly placed all seven of hs pcture tokens on hs Bngo card. MATCHING PICTURE TOKENS TO BINGO CARD: The followng chart ndcates the pcture tokens that correspond to the 30 words descrbng sensormotor strateges to change engne levels. Some pcture tokens could ft n more than one category. If a chld places the pcture token of the grl pettng the cat n the Move category, rather than the Touch category where we may have been expectng her to place t, ths s an opportunty to have more dscusson and non-judgmentally ask, Why? The chld mght say she thnks t s a 20 pound cat lke her pet at home. Therefore, t would ndeed be heavy work to lft the cat. She s correct and clearly understands the Alert Program concepts whch s the goal! 4
