Read story for details in today s Sports. [photo by AF] by Ausage Fausia, Samoa News Reporter The American Samoa Boxing Association (ASBA) boxing team competing in bouts in Samoa last week returned home on Sunday after an outstanding performance, according to coach and trainer Toleafoa Henry Tavake. The team included the two Tanoa s brothers, George Jr and his younger brother each, together with Riley Tuala who had his first professional fight during the event. Both each and Tuala lost their fights by points, while George Jr won his fight against Fifita Tapusoa of Samoa in the middleweight division. During yesterday s interview with Toleafoa, who is also the president of the ASBA, he said that despite Tuala s and Tanoa s losses, both of them showed skill and turned in great performances against their opponents from Samoa. each was really good during the whole three rounds of his bout, he s really active and he dominated the first two rounds with good, clean shots. As a coach and trainer, I m confident that each is now ready to compete in international tournaments around the Pacific, Toleafoa said. Despite the age difference between each, 15 years old and his 18-year old opponent from Samoa, Toleafoa said that the Judges should look at the other side and give each the win, because he was active throughout the whole fight. George Jr won his fight against Tapusoa, who is one of the best Samoan fighters and represented Samoa in Oceania and Pacific tournaments in the past years. According to Toleafoa, George Jr dominated the whole fight with his speed and power, which gave him the win in a unanimous decision. George is moving up with his skills and I believe he will win his fights in the future, said Toleafoa. George lost his previous two fights on points during the XV Pacific Games in PNG in July and during the World hampionships in Australia last September. Toleafoa was George s coach during the Pacific Games, while apu Jamias coached him during the World hampionships. While Tuala lost his first professional fight against Bubba Tuigamala of New Zealand, Toleafoa said that Tuala was really active during his first pro-fight last week, and he s confident that he will doing much better during his next fight in Samoa next month. Tuigamala is a really good fighter, he s smart and strong, but Tuala gave him a hard fight last Saturday in Apia, He (Tuala) almost knocked down Tuigamala during their fight, so I believe that Tuala can do much better when he fights again next month in Samoa, said Toleafoa. Bubba, is best known for being the son of legendary All Black Vaaiga Inga Tuigamala and runs his own boxing gym in Apia. In an interview via-email with Bubba, he told Samoa News he opened up a boxing gym in Samoa because there are many young people there who need a place to go to train and exercise. Tuigamala told Samoa News that his father is helping him open the gym, and he hopes to recruit more young people to get involved in boxing, and be flag carriers for Samoa in the Pacific and around the world. The ASBA is looking at sending a team of 6 local boxers to compete in Samoa on January 23, 2016, during Joseph Parker s first fight in Samoa next year, and the team will include Alapati The Heat an A asa, who lost his first title fight to Hemi Ahio in New Zealand last month.

[photo: LF] Jordan grabs 24 rebounds, lippers beat Blazers 10 LOS ANGELES (AP) The way the Portland Trail Blazers kept fouling DeAndre Jordan down the stretch in a feeble attempt to rally from a double-digit deficit was enough to turn anyone s stomach Damian Lillard notwithstanding. Portland sent Jordan to the free throw line nine times in the final 3:51, and the lippers center missed 10 of 18. But it didn t help the cold-shooting Blazers, who finished at 37.9 percent as Los Angeles beat them 102-87 on onday night. Jordan had a season-high 24 rebounds to go with 18 points, and Blake Griffin scored 23 to help the lippers win their third in a row. The 34 free throw attempts by Jordan was a lippers record. That just means more practice, he said. It gets boring. And it makes me miss my reservations after the game. But other than that, it s the same. Lillard, who leads Portland with a 25.4 scoring average, left the game because of abdominal pain with 10:13 remaining in the third quarter and the Blazers trailing 53-51. He finished with seven points and no assists in 17 minutes. I m pretty sure it was something I ate, said Lillard, who had an omelet at the team hotel after the morning shootaround. I didn t feel sick when we came out there, but when I went through warmups, I started to feel a little bit sick and I was pretty messed up. I had never felt like that. As soon as the game started, I just felt dead, he added. I had no energy and I just felt weak. I tried to play through it, just to see if I would be able to get myself going. But I wasn t comfortable turning and running in different directions with that stomach pain. I thought I was going to throw up on the court. Lillard has started all 264 regular-season games the Blazers have played since the fourth-year veteran guard entered the NBA. That streak is in danger of ending Tuesday night against Dallas if his ailment doesn t subside. If I m good enough to go, then I m going to play, he said. But I know I can t go out there the way I was tonight. Hopefully I ll be ready. Griffin, who began the day with an NBA-best.548 field goal percentage, made eight of 19 shots and grabbed eight boards. hris Paul had 10 points and six assists in 24 minutes, exiting in the third quarter because of a strained rib muscle. Griffin s 450 points are the most by a lippers player through the first 18 games of a season since the franchise relocated from San Diego to Los Angeles in 1984-85. The lippers barely outrebounded Portland 55-54, the first time in 18 games this season that they had the advantage in that department although they have finished on even terms three times. aurice Harkless led Portland with 15 points. Shooting guard.j. collum, who entered second on the team with a 20.4 scoring average, missed eight of his first nine shots and finished 4 for 15 with 12 points and 10 assists. eyers Leonard trimmed the lippers lead to 77-70 on an 11-footer with 9:12 to play, but Los Angeles went on a 15-6 run to pull ahead 92-76 with 4 1/2 minutes remaining. J.J. Redick capped the rally with his fourth and final 3-pointer. collum hit a 3 from the top of the key with 2 seconds left in the first half, pulling the Blazers into a 49-all tie. Harkless, the fourth player off the Portland bench, led the Blazers with 11 points in the half all during a 21-3 surge that turned a 13-point deficit into a 42-37 lead with 3:34 left in the second quarter. Los Angeles opened the game with a 19-4 run that included seven points and six rebounds by Jordan, the franchise s career rebounding leader. The lippers are 16-8 in the regular season when he grabs at least 20. TIP-INS Trail Blazers: Lillard, in the first season of a five-year, $120 million contract extension, has led Portland in scoring in 15 of its first 18 games.... hris aman, who spent his first eight NBA seasons with the lippers, didn t play because of a sprained right ankle.... The Blazers finished a five-game stretch in which they played the lippers and Lakers twice each.... The Blazers go into December with a 7-11 record, compared to their 13-4 mark last season. They have won more than 50 games in each of the last two seasons.... Portland is 0-8 when trailing after three quarters. lippers: Redick has made a career-high 11 field goals in a game on four occasions, and three of those times he did it against Portland. He was 5 for 14 in this one.... The lippers recalled G.J. Wilcox and F Branden Dawson from the Bakersfield Jam of the D-League. Both were on the inactive list. HAWAII BRIEFS Suspect in Planned Parenthood attack makes 1st appearance OLORADO SPRINGS, olo. (AP) The man accused in the shooting rampage at a olorado Planned Parenthood clinic made his first court appearance onday and learned that he will face first-degree murder charges in the deaths of three people killed in the standoff with police. Speaking in a raspy voice, Robert Lewis Dear appeared via a video hookup from the El Paso ounty Jail, where he has been held since surrendering after Friday s five-hour siege. The white-bearded suspect wore a padded vest with black straps that authorities described as a standard-issue safety smock. He gazed downward during most of the hearing. Victims relatives watched from a courtroom. When asked by hief District Judge Gilbert artinez if he understood his rights, Dear replied, no questions. Public defender Daniel ing, who represented olorado theater shooter James Holmes, stood beside Dear and will act as his attorney. The suspect is expected to be formally charged on Dec. 9. Dear, 57, is accused of fatally shooting a university police officer who responded to the attack, as well as an Iraq war veteran and a mother of two inside the clinic. Nine other people were wounded. After onday s hearing, District Attorney Dan ay said Dear could face other charges, but he did not elaborate. Late onday, the husband of Jennifer arkovsky, a woman who was killed in the assault, released a statement recalling how she read to their two children and helped them with their homework. We will miss her; her cooking, crafting and adventurous spirit, Paul arkovsky wrote. EQUIPENT THEFT Police investigate equipment theft at Hilo nonprofit group HILO, Hawaii (AP) Police are investigating the theft of thousands of dollars worth of equipment from a Hilo nonprofit organization that employs adults with disabilities. The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports employment training manager harmaine a-ipo discovered the theft when she arrived at the Arc Of Hilo on Friday morning. a-ipo says surveillance video shows the theft of equipment worth an estimated total of more than $4,800, including a 2013 arson utility trailer with the license plate number 745 HZ. The trailer contained three orange and silver weed trimmers, a 15-gallon poison sprayer, five green Ryobi Echo backpack blowers, a red Shindaiwa 18-inch chain saw, a black and red Honda 21-inch lawnmower and an orange Stihl hedger. Police aj. Sam Thomas called the theft disgusting. Anyone with information is asked to contact authorities. HAWAIIAN HOE LANDS Judge: State underfunded Department of Hawaiian Home Lands HONOLULU (AP) A judge says the state has to appropriate millions of dollars more to fund the Department of Hawaiian Homelands adequately for the first time since at least 1992. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports First ircuit Judge Jeannette astagnetti ruled the state violated its constitutional duty to appropriately fund the department, impacting staffing and Native Home Lands Trust beneficiaries. Hawaii is obligated to budget about $18.4 million more this year for the department. Friday s ruling was issued about eight years after the nonprofit Native Hawaiian Legal orporation filed the lawsuit on behalf of six Native Hawaiians. Plaintiff elii Ioane Jr. applied for a homestead lease in 1981 and has been waiting on an agricultural or pastoral lot ever since. Attorney General Doug hin says the state will consider an appeal. LEI FOR PARIS Volunteers take mile-long lei to Paris WAILUU, Hawaii (AP) A mile-long lei is in Paris after as many as 200 volunteers spent five days weaving together 250 pounds of ti leaves and orchids. The fatal Nov. 13 terrorist attacks on the city prompted Nalu s South Shore Grill, Hawaiian Paddle Sports and the ynthia Rose Foundation to launch the lei project. United Airlines volunteered to ship the lei and paid for a plane ticket. Organizers plan to take sections of the lei to memorial sites at the Bataclan concert hall, Le arillon cafe and bar, and Stade de France stadium.

samoa news, Tuesday, December 1, 2015 Page B3 Brooks big game leads No. 15 Oregon over Fresno State EUGENE, Ore. (AP) If bad things tend to happen in threes as many believe, Oregon coach Dana Altman can only hope his team has gotten letting big leads nearly slip away out of its system. Dillon Brooks had 21 points and 10 rebounds and the 15thranked Ducks staved off a late rally by Fresno State for a 78-73 victory onday night. That s the third time we ve had a double-digit lead and we let them back in, not finishing the game, Altman said, pointing to similar wins over Baylor and Valparaiso. I d like to finish games stronger. hris Boucher and Elgin ook added 14 points each for the Ducks (6-0), who led 70-52 with 6:35 to play before arvelle Harris scored 13 points in a 16-2 run by the Bulldogs (5-1) that cut the deficit to four. A driving layup by Brooks put Oregon up 74-68 with 1:20 left, and the Ducks held on by making four of six free throws in the final 45 seconds. It was the second doubledouble of the season and fourth of his career for Brooks, a sophomore who had 13 points and six rebounds in the second half. He did make some big plays there, Altman said. ou have to have somebody make some plays and he definitely did that down the stretch. Harris, who didn t score until the 12:04 mark of the second half, led Fresno State with 18 points, while Paul Watson added 11 and Torren Jones had 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Bulldogs won the rebounding battle 41-32 behind Jones and arachi Edo, who had nine rebounds and 10 points. Freshman Tyler Dorsey, Oregon s leading scorer at 15.2 points per game, finished with 12. Altman pointed to two areas of concern heading into Oregon s first road game: too many turnovers (17) and not enough defense after Fresno State shot 50.0 percent in the second half and scored 48 points. Our ball-handling s got to improve tremendously, Altman said. Defensively the second half was not good. We give up a lot of easy baskets. The Ducks scored the game s first 11 points, went up by as many as 14 and took a 37-25 halftime lead. The Ducks did most of the damage from inside the 3-point arc (9 of 10) and at the free throw line, outscoring the Bulldogs 13-5. Fresno State, meanwhile, missed its first six shots from the field, shot 29.0 percent (9 of 31) and saw its top two scorers, Harris and ezar Guerrero, held scoreless for the first 20 minutes. The senior guards came in averaging 20.2 and 13.2 points per game, respectively. ou like to think you re going to start most games better than we did tonight, but we fought some adversity, Fresno State coach Rodney Terry said. We let our offense affect our defense in the first seven minutes of the game. TAING OFFENSE Oregon cooled off in the second half, shooting 39.4 percent from the field to finish 24 of 55 (43.6 percent). uch to Altman s dismay, the Ducks went hunting for shots instead of running the offensive set he called from the sideline. If I don t recognize what we re running, our percentages are really bad, he said. When I had a little idea of what we re trying to accomplish, our percentages go way up, but we ve got a lot of wasted possessions where I ve got no idea what we re trying to do. ISSED OPPORTUNITIES After finally finding some offensive flow behind Harris issouri governor, Rams own -er meet day before NFL meet JEFFERSON IT, o. (AP) issouri Gov. Jay Nixon met with Rams owner Stan roenke onday, the day before an NFL owners meeting in Dallas where teams will discuss putting a franchise in Los Angeles. Nixon spokeswoman hanning Ansley confirmed the meeting at Rams Park but declined to comment further. Owners of the St. Louis Rams, San Diego hargers and Oakland Raiders are all exploring moves to Los Angeles. embers of a task force appointed by Nixon have been working for months to develop a counterproposal to roenke s efforts to move the Rams, but there s been little or no contact between Nixon and roenke until onday. The governor and roenke met the same day lawmakers blasted plans for a new stadium during a House Budget ommittee hearing in Jefferson ity. Nixon s push for a new stadium has frustrated some lawmakers, who either want a say in the matter or want such a plan to go to a vote of the people. For almost an hour onday, lawmakers questioned Administration ommissioner Doug Nelson about the finances of the proposal and the potential impact on the state s credit rating if the Legislature refuses to budget money to pay off debt for a new stadium. Nelson answered few of their questions. He said he s never met with task force member Dave Peacock, said it s unclear whether lawmaker refusal to pay off stadium debt would hurt issouri s high credit rating and questioned whether the Rams will move. late in the second half to close within four points, the Bulldogs couldn t draw any closer. Part of the reason was several late turnovers, as Fresno State finished with 18, more than its opponent for the first time in six games. We didn t get the execution we wanted late in the second half, Terry said. Nevertheless, I can live with those kinds of mistakes because guys are going hard. TIP-INS Fresno State: Harris, the preseason choice for ountain West onference player of the year, needed one point to crack the Bulldog s all-time top 10 in scoring. After going scoreless in the first half, he finished with 18 to rank 10th with 1,425, one behind Tod Bernard in ninth place, in 107 career games.... The Bulldogs fell to 2-10 alltime against Oregon. They last time they beat the Ducks, who have won the last five meetings, was in 1995.... Fresno State hasn t beaten a Top 25 team on the road since 2000. Oregon: The Ducks are 40-2 against nonconference opponents since moving into atthew night Arena five years ago.... The 6-0 start is Oregon s second in the last nine years. The Ducks started 13-0 two seasons ago. Good orning! ou know it s a good morning when you wake up with everything you need. Find us at a store near you! With effective treatment, people with HIV can live as long as those without HIV. Fear, shame and ignorance remain barriers to testing and treatment, which can be more deadly than HIV itself. People with HIV who are in treatment need never develop advanced HIV (formerly full-blown AIDS). Please encourage your readers, regardless of age, gender or sexual orientation, to get tested, and if positive, to get treatment. HIV can affect anyone. -- AR IN FREDERI, D. DEAR AR: I m glad you wrote. nowing one s HIV status is extremely important because, unlike in years past, the disease can be controlled. But in order to do that and not spread it to others, it is essential that sexually active individuals get tested. Readers, you can be a healthy HIV-positive person and control it IF you know you have it AND get treatment. Ask your doctor about being tested, if you have one. If you don t have a doctor, contact your county health department about how to find testing and treatment in your community, or visit www.freehivtest.net for information about free tests in many areas across the nation and abroad. I own some properties I am desperately trying to prepare for the market. At my age, I no longer need or want anything. It has reached a point where the preferred gift is money, which isn t the idea behind the hristmas holiday. How can I politely stop this habit? -- RS. EBENEZER SROOGE IN NEW HAPSHIRE DEAR RS. SROOGE: ou politely stop the habit by telling your sisters in advance that you are trying to prepare your properties for sale and money is limited. Be sure to send the adults lovely holiday cards, however, so they know they are remembered. DEAR ABB: Besides the usual snoring most wives tolerate, I have had to endure something worse. Page B12 samoa news, Tuesday, December 1, 2015 Dig Into READING Utulei Village 633-5816 http://fbpl.org TELL E A STOR: LITTLE RED AND THE DRAGON (A hinese Folktale) adapted by Amy Friedman and illustrated by eredith Johnson Once upon a time, a woman lived in the mountains with her little daughter, who always dressed in red. Everyone called her Little Red. One day, mother and daughter were working in the fields when suddenly a gust of wind blew out of nowhere. Little Red looked up and saw an enormous dragon with ferocious claws. Before she could scream, the dragon grabbed her and swooped her up into the sky. Her mother cried, Stop! But her words were lost in the wild wind. Little Red called, other, mother, do not cry. y brother will rescue me in the sky. Then the dragon carried her away. The mother fell to her knees and stared into the empty sky. She had only a daughter. Little Red had no brother. What could the girl be talking about? Her heart was broken. Bent with grief, she began to walk home. Blinded by her tears, she did not see the low-hanging branch of a bayberry tree. As she walked past, her hair got caught in the branch. She reached up to disentangle it and noticed a single red berry. Without thinking, she picked the berry and swallowed it. To her amazement, by the time she reached home, she was pregnant. That very night, she gave birth to a boy as round and red-cheeked as that berry. I ll call you my little Bayberry, she whispered, cradling her boy. But she could not cradle him for long. Within days, he was as large and strong as a teenager. Whenever his mother looked at him, she thought of Little Red. She wanted to ask her son to rescue her daughter, but she could not bear the thought of losing him as well. And so she kept Little Red and the dragon a secret, and she cried only after she knew her boy was fast asleep. One day, a crow landed on the roof of the house and yelled to Bayberry, our sister is caught up in the dragon s lair, digging rocks with hands that are bare! When Bayberry heard this, he was puzzled. That evening, he said to his mother, Do I have a sister? His mother began to weep. es, she said, and she told him the story of the dragon that had carried his sister away. The moment he heard the story, Bayberry stood and said, I am going to rescue my sister and kill that evil dragon! His mother reached to hold him back, but he brushed past her and marched away. Bayberry walked for many miles high into the mountains until he reached an enormous rock on the road that blocked his way. It was smooth on top, worn by travelers who had climbed over it. On either side was a steep drop to the valley below. I must remove this obstacle, he told himself. If I don t, many travelers will be hurt. Summoning all his strength, he reached down and shifted that rock to the side until it rolled into the valley. In its place a golden pipe appeared. Bayberry picked it up and blew on it. As he did, the mountain and valley shivered with the deep sound, and all the frogs, worms, lizards, bees and rabbits began to dance. Now Bayberry understood. He had discovered a way to overcome the dragon. He walked on, holding the golden pipe, and he climbed higher and higher into the clouds. At the top of the mountain, he spotted a cave. At the entrance of the cave stood the evil dragon surrounded by piles of bones. There, just behind him at the entrance to the cave, was a little girl digging with her bare hands at the stone. The dragon commanded her: Dig on, dig on, Little Red. Dig deeper until this roof is higher than my head. Dig on, dig on, Little Red. If you do not, you ll soon be dead. Bayberry began to blow on his pipe, and the music immediately set the dragon dancing. What s this? he roared. Why are you playing so fast? Stop right now, or you won t last! But he could not stop dancing. Bayberry continued, and the dragon danced on. He could not stop. When the boy played faster, the dragon danced faster. Little Red saw what was happening. aking sure to steer clear of the dragon, she crept out of the cave and toward the boy playing the pipe. Bayberry kept playing, and the dragon danced on until fire streamed from his eyes and steam poured out of his nostrils. Breathless, he cried, Brother, brother, you are stronger! Stop your playing. Blow no longer! But Bayberry did not stop. As he played, he walked away from the cave. The dragon was forced to follow. They moved toward an icy lake, and the dragon could not stop dancing. When they reached the lake s edge, Bayberry blew harder still. Stop, stop! the dragon begged. I cannot swim in ice. Please stop. I promise to be nice. But Bayberry did not stop, and the dragon danced right into the lake. He crashed through the icy surface, dancing still. Leaping up to gasp for breath, the dragon cried, Please stop! ou are stronger! I ll keep your sister no longer. Bayberry stopped for one moment to say, If you stay in this lake, this promise I shall make.
