MASTER OF Graduate certificate in by distance education

Master of About the program CSU s Master of is aimed at practising human resource management professionals, line managers responsible for human resource management functions and others wishing to enter the profession. ACCREDITED 2008-2011 The Master program has been designed to achieve three broad objectives: to provide knowledge and skill development in graduates that permits career advancement to senior and executive roles in human resource management within both private and public sector organisations. to provide a broad range of human resource management subjects that have the capacity to enhance human resource management professional practice in and across organisational settings. to articulate and foster an approach to human resource management that integrates and aligns various specialisations, including training and development, industrial relations, staffing and organisational development, into a broad framework that can make a positive contribution to organisational performance. Students may choose to exit the Master program with either a Graduate Certificate in after completion of the four core subjects, or a Graduate Diploma in after the completion of eight specified subjects. AHRI Professional Diploma Articulation Applicants who have successfully completed the Australian Human Resource Institute (AHRI) Professional Diploma will receive four subjects credit into CSU s Master of Human Resource Management program. I decided to enrol in the CSU Master of (MHRM) program to back up my work experience with a relevant qualification. Working and being the mother of two pre-schoolers, I found the flexibility of CSU s distance education coursework Master program was ideal for me. The coursework was interesting and motivating and, as the program progressed, so did the use of technology, providing great advantages for distance education students. Enrolling in the MHRM was a vital step in my lifelong learning path and one which has helped me enormously in building credibility in my chosen field, while simultaneously gaining valuable practical experience. Susan Rochester BSc, MHRM (graduated with distinction 2004) Business Partner, Balance at Work Pty Ltd

Program structure The Master program comprises 12 subjects, and is designed to provide students with the flexibility to tailor their degree to their needs and career aspirations. Core subjects Students must complete ALL FOUR core subjects: HRM502 HRM523 Advanced Studies in Industrial Relations HRM528 Strategic LAW515 Law of Employment Foundation subjects Students must complete any FOUR of the following eight subjects: HRM501 Labour Market Studies HRM512 Values and Conflicts in Organisations HRM550 Evaluating Human Resources HRM552 Organisational Behaviour HRM563 Developing Organisational Capabilities MGT501 Management Theory and Practice MGT540 Management of Change MGT594 Leadership and Business Ethics Specialisations Students may select a Specialisation or simply complete any four subjects offered on the Master of Human Resource Management program. A complete list of subjects is available at: Specialisations available: MHRM (Business Partnership) MHRM (Conflict and Dispute Resolution) MHRM (Employment Relations) MHRM (International HRM) MHRM (Management of Organisational Change) Note: When a Foundation subject is part of a chosen Specialisation, students must complete an additional Foundation subject. After some months of searching for courses, I realised that my knowledge needs were best met by studying the MHRM offered by Charles Sturt University. The online facility enables easy access to staff, with subject forums for discussion among students, and the electronic library has a great range of databases to aid in assignment preparation. The benefit and flexibility of studying by distance education allowed me to work to my own schedule. I was able to balance work, family, study and still go on holidays. In 2007, I managed to study and holiday by sailing a catamaran through the Whitsunday s. I am very happy with my experiences on this course and would recommend others to take a close look at CSU s Human Resource programs. They are relevant, challenging and provide well-researched content. The knowledge gained transfers easily to the workplace. Des Seery BA Grad Dip HRD (CAHRI) MHRM (graduated 2008) Manager, People and Performance Western Australian Treasury Corporation

Graduate Certificate in About the program The aim of the Graduate Certificate in is to provide human resource practitioners and others with a high quality practical and theoretical understanding of human resource management. ACCREDITED 2008-2011 The program has been designed to: provide an introduction to and an examination of the roles and functions of human resource management in organisations examine how HR functions or techniques help an organisation to perform efficiently and effectively in order to obtain a competitive advantage investigate the ethical moral implications of the human resource functions and examine contemporary issues that may impact upon work and industrial relations in Australian society examine strategic human resource management in the context of a changing business environment. PROGRAM STRUCTURE The Graduate Certificate in consists of FOUR CORE subjects. Core subjects: HRM502 HRM523 Advanced Studies in Industrial Relations HRM528 Strategic LAW515 Law of Employment Pathway to the Master of Human Resource Management Upon successful completion of the Graduate Certificate, students may apply to articulate into the Master of Human Resource Management and receive credits for the subjects completed. As part of their Career Pathways Program, my employer H.W. Greenham & Sons Pty Ltd (a Victorian beef exporting company) encouraged me to acquire further qualifications and, as CSU has been the university of choice for the red meat industry for many years, I enrolled as a distance education student in the Graduate Certificate in HRM. I have since continued my studies, as achieving the Master Degree in HRM was all too tempting. My studies at CSU have opened up a new world to me. My outlook with domestic and international affairs and my studies have given me more confidence in myself. For anyone contemplating distance education, don t hesitate. You will find all CSU staff only too willing to help along your journey in further education. Cheryl Lees Graduate Certificate in HRM (graduated 2005) MHRM (graduated 2009) HR Officer, H.W. Greenham & Sons Pty Ltd

SESSIONS Both programs are delivered via distance education over three sessions each year: Session 1: February June Session 2: July October Session 3: November February CSU offers flexible study arrangements enabling students to study one or two subjects per session, depending on their requirements. Studying by distance education allows students to work at their own pace and be able to apply the knowledge gained in their work environment. Subject material Distance education study packages are self-contained and include study notes, readings, assessment tasks and prescribed textbook. Each subject requires approximately 10-15 hours per week of study time. Students have access to the CSU library database on line and are encouraged to use the subject forum to communicate with other students and to contact the teaching staff. Transfer credit Candidates may receive transfer credit for up to 50% of the course for prior study if they can demonstrate that such study was completed within the last 10 years at the postgraduate level. To apply for credit, candidates are required to submit with their application for admission a certified transcript of results and subject outline/curriculum of those subjects in question. Application and closing dates To apply for admission, please apply online, or complete the Application for Admission form and submit with supporting documentation (e.g. certified copy of qualifications, résumé, certified copy of a document as evidence of your name and date of birth, where applicable) to CSU Admissions Office. Closing dates, application forms and information on how to apply is available at: www.csu.edu.au/apply or via the online course brochure at: The Master in at CSU added depth and breadth to my work as a senior manager in HRM and subsequently opened up opportunities to move into an academic career. I chose to study at CSU because of its emphasis on flexibility and the breadth of study that the Masters program offered. One of the most challenging aspects of part-time study is trying to balance work, study and home commitments and I found that the CSU program was a great help through well-designed learning materials, great support from lecturers on and offline and the opportunity to network with peers through the online forums. The content and assessments in the program gave me a chance to apply theory in my own workplace and to reflect on my practice. The assessments helped to broaden my thinking and to learn to think more critically about what was often accepted uncritically as good practice in HRM. I made some great friendships while studying and this was possible even within an online learning environment. Some executive programs provide half the value at more than twice the cost. From a value for money standpoint, CSU s Master in HRM stands out. It is this and much more! Dr Chrys Gunasekara, MHRM, PhD Senior Lecturer, Queensland University of Technology
