Emergency Preparedness and Response Program Kenya has witnessed a number of disasters and emergencies in the recent past. From fires, floods, accidents, collapsed buildings, landslides, terror attacks to humanitarian crises as a result of prolonged droughts and floods. Serious gaps have been noted in how we have responded and even managed these situations - from late arrivals, insufficient number of people to handle the emergency, inadequate resources all the way to uncoordinated efforts which have resulted to prolonged time and effort to resolve the crises situation. In trying to address these gaps as well as build nationwide capacity for faster and more coordinated emergence and disaster response, the Kenya Institute of Management, a nationwide membership and capacity building institution in collaboration with Save the Children UK through its Humanitarian Leadership Academy have partnered to launch a program in Emergency Preparedness and Response. Course objective The course aims at equipping participants with knowledge and skills to plan and respond to emergencies in their contexts. This will meet current and future capacity needs in addressing both natural and human-made disasters. Learners will be equipped with practical skills on emergency preparedness and response hence they will be able to handle disasters when they strike. Intended audience This course will benefit people who are at the frontline of disaster response and management of humanitarian crises across the country. Corporates are also encouraged to build capacity in their teams to effectively take leadership within and outside their organizations should a disaster strike. Certification in Automation of Records and Information Systems Automation of registries, libraries, and archives is the way to manage information in the 21st century. Majority of organizations and government ministries are computerizing their records management systems. Critical then is to ensure sufficient capacity for the staff dealing with the automation process hence this course. The course is taught in a computer lab setting with computers installed with the relevant Document Management Systems. Course Objectives The course will equip information services personnel in organizations with the requisite skills and knowledge to effectively automate and manage information using modern information technology methods and tools. The course will enable participants to apply the automation knowledge and skills gained in a real business setting. Certification in Quality Management Certification in Environmental Impact Assessment There is a direct correlation between environmental sustainability and economic development. As a country takes off in economic growth which comes with a lot of infrastructure growth, housing, agriculture and manufacturing, a lot of caution must be invested in ensuring that the environmental impact is known. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a critical examination of the effects of a project on the environment. The course is certified by the National Environment Management Authority- Kenya (NEMA). To build capacity towards minimizing adverse impacts on the environment and reduces risks at all stages of a project- planning, design, construction, operation, monitoring and evaluation as well as decommissioning. Certification in Monitoring and Evaluation Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) is a critical component in today s business landscape. The increased demand for accountability, performance management and creation of credible feedback mechanisms on projects creates the need for team leaders to develop competencies around designing, tracking and reporting on projects. The course is a three-month examinable program that aims at equipping managers with cutting-edge knowledge, skill and attitude requisite to designing, monitoring and evaluating impactful projects. Course Objective This course aims at equipping managers with applied results based M&E skills to enhance accountability, performance management and creating credible feedback mechanisms for project and business sustainability.
