BSB51407 Diploma of Project Management 2.1 Program Information This qualification has been designed to equip participants with the essential knowledge, skills and attributes required to work effectively in project management roles that require conceptual, operational and supervisory capabilities. Typically, people in these roles will have responsibility for the work of other staff as well. As this qualification requires participants to apply and practice the new skills over a period of time, and also to base their assessment solutions in a workplace environment, it is highly preferable that candidates are employed or otherwise engaged. 2

The skills you gain from this course will prepare you for a range of Project Management careers, including: Project Manager Project Leader Project Management Facilitator Project or Program Administrator This course provides the opportunity to formalise and to develop project managerial skills to perform at a higher level in the workplace, and receive a nationally accredited qualification. 2.2 Entry requirements and pathways There are no entry requirements for this qualification. Pathways into the qualification Candidates may enter the qualification through a number of entry points demonstrating potential to undertake vocational education and training at diploma - level, including: with BSB41507 Certificate IV in Project Management or other relevant qualification; OR with extensive vocational experience in project roles where they may have had some limited responsibility for the output of others, and without a formal project management qualification Candidates seeking entry based upon their vocational experience or for workplace-based enrolment should generally be in job roles including: Project Coordinator Project Management Officer Project Team Member Project or Program Administrator Experienced managers who are already managing projects in an organisation and wish to have their skills formally recognised Individuals requiring formal project management qualifications for promotion or other employment opportunities External consultants experienced in Project Management who wish to gain a formal qualification Pathways to completion and further studies Pathways to completion of this qualification include: Course attendance and assessment RPL / Credit Transfer for partial or full qualification A combination of the above Units completed in this program may be credited towards other qualifications through a national recognition process. 4

After achieving this qualification candidates may undertake BSB60707 Advanced Diploma of Project Management or other advanced diploma qualifications. Graduates with the Diploma of Project Management are eligible for Associate Membership with the Australian Institute of Project Management, and may also become eligible for full membership in the future. 2.3 Units of Competency The Diploma of Project Management requires the completion of a total of 9 units of competency, as follows: 1. BSBPMG501A Manage application of project integrative processes This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to integrate and balance the overall project management functions of scope, time, cost, quality, human resources, communications, risk and procurement; and to align and track the project objectives to comply with organisational goals, strategies and objectives. 2. BSBPMG502A Manage project scope This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to determine and manage project outcomes. It covers project authorisation, developing a scope management plan, and managing the application of project scope controls. 3. BSBPMG505A Manage project quality This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage quality within projects. It covers determining quality requirements, implementing quality assurance processes, and using review and evaluation to make quality improvements in current and future projects. 5

4. BSBPMG503A Manage project time This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage time within projects. It covers determining and implementing the project schedule, and assessing time management outcomes. 5. BSBPMG504A Manage project costs This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to identify, analyse and refine project costs to produce a budget, and to use this budget as the principal mechanism to control project cost. 6. BSBPMG508A Manage project risk This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to manage risk within a project to avoid adverse effects on project outcomes. It covers determining, monitoring and controlling project risks, and assessing risk management outcomes. 7. BSBPMG509A Manage project procurement This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to undertake procurement and contract management within projects. It covers determining procurement requirements, establishing agreed procurement processes, conducting contracting and procurement activities, and managing finalisation processes. 8. BSBPMG506A Manage project human resources This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to undertake human resource management (HRM) within projects. It involves planning for human resources, implementing staff training and development, and managing the project team and stakeholders. 6

9. BSBPMG507A Manage project communications This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to link people, ideas and information at all stages in the project life cycle. Project communications management ensures the timely and appropriate generation, collection, dissemination, storage and disposal of project information through formal structures and processes. 2.4 Time Commitment This program is a combination of face to face delivery, reading through and undertaking the activities within the Participant Guide to understand the theoretical concepts, and self-directed or structured workplace learning and assessment activities; your completed assessments are to be submitted to the Trainer/Assessor at the specified date. The recommended nominal duration for this program is 380 hours, including the face-to-face component; this requires a significant personal time commitment from participants to successfully complete all requirements to gain the qualification. Participants should allocate a minimum of 10 hours per week to read through the Participant Guide, undertake the self-directed learning activities or undertake the non-routine applied learning activities in the workplace, and complete the assessments. The learning schedule and activities for your traineeship course are provided to you as guidelines in Part 3 of your Training Plan. 2.5 Assessment Classroom-based (non-traineeship) delivery: Assessments for each of the units must be completed and submitted as scheduled (e.g. within a 2 or 6-month timeframe from the delivery of the unit). This schedule allows for a reasonable time for workplace practice and assessment preparation. You will have to email your assessments to the 7

Training Registrar, unless otherwise instructed. All assessment work must be received by VECCI by the end of the course. Where participants are able to demonstrate extenuating circumstances, however, an extension for assessment submission may be granted. The end date of your course is the last assessment due date. Traineeships (if applicable): The assessment due dates will be scheduled in agreement with the participant, and then documented in the Training Plan. Assessments must be submitted (handed over) to the assessor on the agreed dates. For more detailed information on the delivery and assessment process, methods and requirements, refer to the Participant Handbook. 2.6 Employability Skills Summary Today, employers in Australia and all over the world value people who have the necessary skills and knowledge but whom also fit well into their organisation, use their initiative to solve day-to-day problems, work productively, manage their time efficiently, and are keen to continue learning. These types of skills are known as 'employability skills'. These are skills required not only to gain employment, but also to progress within an enterprise so as to achieve one's potential and contribute successfully to enterprise strategic directions. The employability skills are embedded within each unit of competency you will study and they will be holistically assessed together with the other performance requirements. The following table contains a summary of the employability skills required by industry for the Diploma of Project Management the outcomes described here are broad industry requirements that may vary depending on the detailed requirements of each unit of competency that makes up this qualification. 8

Employability Skill Industry/ enterprise requirements for this qualification include: Communication consulting with stakeholders and others on developing a range of project management related plans negotiating contracts and solutions to new and emerging issues utilising excellent interpersonal skills and producing a wide range of reports and charts to document project progress, milestones and outcomes Teamwork defining performance measures and managing the work of others through positive leadership delegating roles and responsibilities to team for the implementation of project plans Problem solving analysing data and evaluating the effectiveness of systems calculating resource requirements and acquiring them designing control mechanisms and evaluating procedures implementing continuous improvement processes as required performing cost benefit analyses, budgeting, assessing and managing risk solving complex and non-routine difficulties tracking and monitoring projects using a variety of problem-solving and decision-making strategies Initiative and enterprise responding to new and changing circumstances to ensure project outcomes remain achievable reviewing processes to inform future activity Planning and organising developing a quality assurance process and applying appropriate techniques and tools planning and managing projects in respect to time, cost, quality and resource management 9

undertaking contingency planning and integrating all project processes Self - management managing own time and priorities and dealing with contingencies taking responsibility as required by work role and ensuring all organisational polices and procedures are followed using discretion and judgement required within complex environments using judgement in planning and selecting resources for oneself and others Learning providing learning and development opportunities for the project team counselling staff as required on skill development requirements Technology using electronic communication devices and processes such as internet, intranet, email, to produce written correspondence and reports using project management specific software including time analysis and risk analysis tools using technology to assist the management of information and to assist the planning process 10
