SOS provides shelter, meals, and case management services for families primarily within Oakland County. The shelter works in collaboration with several religious groups to provide families with a support network and a safe environment while in housing transition. Our mission is to provide emergency shelter and work with individuals and families toward their goals of improving their existing situation (i.e. attaining employment/income, budgeting and saving, locating affordable and appropriate housing). Also, SOS provides community referrals to families to address additional needs and to achieve a continuum of care. The length of time the families are permitted to remain at the shelter depends primarily on progressive improvement and adherence to shelter rules and standards. A number of communities in Oakland County have established housing commissions to assist in meeting the housing needs of residents and newcomers. A major responsibility of a housing commission is to administer public housing units (federally subsidized) within the community for families and elderly persons of low income. The housing commission is responsible for overseeing the proper upkeep-maintenance of the public housing units and also deals with resolving complaints of tenants. A public housing commission office may also provide information and assistance in helping persons to locate suitable housing within the community. Assists persons who are planning to either rent or purchase a home, rent an apartment, have complaints about rental property, are facing HUD foreclosure, need help in locating legal assistance, have Fair Housing problems, or are interested in a home equity mortgage (seniors).
