Scholar Spotlight: Dr. Karsoya Whitehead Dr. Karsoya (Kaye) Wise Whitehead is assistat professor of Commuicatio ad Africa America Studies at Loyola Uiversity, Marylad. She completed her Ph.D. i 2013 at the Uiversity of Marylad Baltimore Couty. What made you wat to pursue a Ph.D.? After havig worked as a documetary filmmaker ad televisio producer for 10 years ad as a school teacher for four years, I was fially ready to go back to school ad work o my doctoral degree. It was always a log-term goal for me, though I did ot kow how I was goig to accomplish it. I was a wife, a mother of two youg boys, ad I worked full time outside of the home. I was ot sure that I could balace the demads required by each of the areas. I realized after I tured 35 years old that if I did ot eter ito a Ph.D. program before I tured 40, I might ot ever have the chace to do it. What were some of the challeges you faced while workig o your Ph.D.? Durig my first year i the doctoral program, I was teachig five classes a day while also workig 10 hours a week as a research assistat. I had two boys uder seve years old, I was a full time studet ad was also a wife. e largest problem was tryig to fid a balace for all the parts of my life. It was probably the most difficult year of my program. I cried all of the time, because I was uable to fid a way to catch up. At the same time, I could ot coceive of a way to make it easier for myself, because I was uable to give aythig up. I was growig so much as a doctoral studet that I could ot imagie leavig the program, ad I eeded my job. I was determied to fid a way to make it work. What advice do you have for those who are startig out or who are ow i the middle of their doctoral program? My advice for studets who are just eterig their doctoral program is to work with their advisors ad start to decide what they wat to work o while they are i their programs. I always see the dissertatio as a steppig stoe to lift you up ito the field that you will essetially stad o for the ext 20 years. ik deeply about the work that you wat to do, ad the decide whether you ca do it for the ext 20 years. Cosider these questios: Does it hold your iterest? Are you excited about the work? Do you feel that you have somethig to say? Is this your vocatio or callig? If you are i the middle, make sure you are o the right track. is is the most excitig time i your life. You have people who are focused o helpig you to hoe your research; fid your voice i the field, ad fiish your program. Take advatage of it! Fid opportuities to publish, co-publish, co-preset ad atted cofereces as much as possible To hear more about Dr. Whitehead s doctoral experiece ad her advice for ew graduates, visit our mai page http://www.sreb.org/page/1074/doctoral_scholars.html. 9
