After hudreds of coversatios ad dozes of site visits, the Board of Trustees uaimously approved three programs: doctor of physical therapy, doctor of occupatioal therapy, ad master of physicia assistat studies. Approachig a project of this magitude pragmatically, college officials determied a set of guidelies to keep the process focused o ehacig the college as a whole. 5 The Visio for Murphy Demig College of Health Scieces MBC chose the buildig site for MDCHS from amog 20 differet optios. It will be located o Goose Creek Road i Fishersville, at the heart of the area s medical services hub. With the site selected, architectural firm Kahler Slater has desigs for the buildig uderway. 6 Establishig Leadership MBC hired accomplished professioals for two of the top leadership positios i MDCHS durig summer Dr. Lida Seestedt-Staford was amed foudig vice presidet of health scieces ad will help develop ad build the three ew graduate programs. Prior to joiig the MBC commuity, Seestedt-Staford served as dea of the College of Health ad Huma Scieces ad professor of commuicatio scieces ad disorders at Wester Carolia Uiversity (WCU). This ew college (MDCHS) will build its programs based o the reality that quality healthcare practice relies o bright, flexible practitioers that are accustomed to workig collaboratively across disciplies i the delivery of patiet care. From the curriculum to the layout of our ew health scieces facility, iter-professioal didactic ad cliical iteractios will make our programs truly uique. Dr. Lisa Doega Shoaf MBC also welcomed Harrisoburg ative Dr. Lisa Doega Shoaf as foudig director of the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program for MDCHS. Shoaf has early 31 years of experiece i the field ad was a faculty member withi the Departmet of Physical Therapy at Virgiia Commowealth Uiversity (VCU) prior to joiig the raks at MBC. I am elated to hear the ews regardig the $15 millio that was committed to establish health sciece graduate programs. Whe I atteded Mary Baldwi College i , there were oly two istitutios i the state that eve offered a bachelor s degree i physical therapy, ad I trasferred to oe of them after my juior year, so I am particularly thrilled that MBC will ow offer that doctoral program. 7 A Trasformatioal Ivestmet Durig the feasibility study, Board of Trustees members ad college staff visited a umber of colleges with physicia assistat, physical therapy, ad occupatioal therapy programs. They all observed the clear halo effect that these health scieces programs had o istitutios as a whole. There was o questio that these graduate disciplies had served the colleges well i a variety of ways. Brigig health scieces programs to MBC will ehace the core of udergraduate liberal arts educatio while itroducig ew opportuities to urture cofidet, compassioate chagemakers. Much work has goe ito esurig that MDCHS will grow to serve both the college ad commuity powerfully i years to come. MBC is dedicated to stregtheig its udergraduate sciece programs i tadem with lauchig graduate programs i health scieces. Phase I of the reovatio project is ow complete, thaks to MBC doors ad a $1.2 millio grat from the Natioal Sciece Foudatio; fudraisig for the ext phase is uderway.
