Organization: CPEP Connecticut Pre-Engineering Program Program Contact: Mr. Noah Ratzan Senior Programs Manager Internship title or position: Summer Program Assistant Manager Job description and goals that the intern will be expected to achieve Are you interested in participating in a transformational learning opportunity this summer? Do you want to learn from and interact with senior level executives in a fast paced and ridiculously fun environment? Are you interested in using your talents, passion, and skills to orchestrate brighter futures for underrepresented middle school students and see the immediate impact of your efforts? If yes, we want you to join with us to develop and implement our nationally awardwinning, five-week, immersive summer mathematics learning program The CPEP Summer Gaming Challenge!! CPEP s mission is to serve under-represented students by improving their interest in and access to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers through innovative educational programs. The organization was created over 25 years ago by Hartford, CT engineers and educators because of the significant lack of women and minority representation in the STEM workforce. The disparity still exists, and with the global rise in importance of STEM industries, CPEP s educational programs are more relevant than ever. Since 1986, operating from one school with 40 students, CPEP has expanded to 35 schools in 11 urban districts, directly impacting the lives of over 25,000 students and over 1,500 students annually. CPEP is a nationally award winning organization recognized by: The Harvard Business School Club of Connecticut Turbo Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management The 2013 Excellence Award for summer learning from the National Summer Learning Association The 21 st Century Solutions Award from the NBC Universal Foundation The Golden Torch Award from the National Society of Black Engineers The Presidential Award from the National Science Foundation for its Mentor Program with the New Haven Public Schools. CPEP's summer Internship experience provides a unique learning opportunity for individuals interested in careers in business, education, science, technology, engineering or mathematics. The experience offers invaluable hands-on training and experience through participation and assignments that allow for the practical application of academic knowledge and the development of business skills necessary for a career in a variety of endeavors. Interns work side by side with business professionals and educators in such areas as project management, project planning and development, program evaluation, continuous improvement techniques, student relations, communications, information technology, social media and event planning. Interaction with fellow interns and professionals on staff also allow for the creation of valuable contacts and opportunities for the future. Purpose of the CPEP Summer Gaming Challenge Program Research shows that Most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months. (Cooper, 1996). Because mathematics is the language and gateway to science, technology, and engineering careers, assuring under-represented students are successful in mathematics is essential to CPEP s mission. In response to the research on mathematics summer learning loss, CPEP has developed a cuttingedge, 5 week, immersive summer experience for middle school students designed to support mathematics learning through a blend of educational video game learning, traditional math instruction, and hands-on team-based project challenges. CPEP teachers use a suite of sophisticated, engaging, and educational video game learning systems along with teambased challenges to provide students with a fun, relevant, and research-supported approach to learning. The program is now in its fifth year, and the results are impressive - average daily attendance is over 90% each summer, students have average math gains of over 30% on their post-assessments, and the experience is so positive that over 90% of staff members say they would like to return to work for the program the next summer! For these reasons and more, the 2013 CPEP Summer Gaming Challenge won the Excellence Award for summer program quality from the National Summer Learning Association out of 90 competing programs across the nation!

Position Title: Teaching Assistant, CPEP Summer Math Challenge program Organization: For over 25 years, CPEP has been a forward- thinking educational non- profit dedicated to bringing exciting, hands- on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs to Connecticut's under- represented youth. Through innovative out- of- school time programs, CPEP serves as a catalyst to significantly change the attitudes, behavior, and knowledge of under- represented youth relating to the pursuit of STEM careers. CPEP's afterschool, Saturday, and summer- time programs give students an opportunity to explore their world through diverse projects including film- making, robotics, computer programming, model building, math video- game challenges, and more. Program The CPEP Summer Math Challenge program is a nationally award- winning, exciting, fun- filled, and tuition- free summer learning program. The program is designed to stem summer learning loss by improving students math abilities and aiding in youth's character and social development. Students learn math, problem solving skills, and creative computing skills in a blended math learning environment and through engaging math video- game challenges, digital media creation, and other collaborative and creative activities. In 2015, the program will be offered in New Britain, Hartford, East Hartford, New Haven, and Waterbury. The CPEP Summer Math Challenge program only certified teachers and highly qualified co- counselors, and has a student to staff ratio of 7:1. Students are nominated for the 5- week, voluntary camp based on their interest and abilities in math. Staff are selected based on proven experience and enthusiasm for working with youth and for making learning fun, engaging, and meaningful. Job Description The teaching assistant plays a crucial role in the success of the students at camp. Mathematics and problem- solving is a central component of the curriculum, but youth development and 21st century skills, including the use of technologies like computers and the web, are also an important part of the curriculum. During projects and both academic and non- academic activities, teaching assistants engage students both one- on- one and as a leader of small groups. They support and implement the lesson plans and educational techniques of the teacher, and they play an integral part in shaping the students' education. The sixty students who attend CPEP Summer Camp are divided into four groups of fifteen, and a teacher and teaching assistant will serve as the leaders for each of the

groups. Teaching assistants also facilitate and participate in many camp activities outside of their classroom. Such activities include games, field trips, lunch time supervision, and other activities. Furthermore, there are opportunities for teaching assistants to serve as leaders of large groups and camp events, which makes the position an important one in building one's leadership abilities. During the course of the day, teaching assistants are responsible for campers' well- being and supervision. They act as a role model demonstrating excellence with regard to attitude, team- work, professionalism, and, very importantly, camp spirit! Teaching assistants serve as key ingredients in helping students grow, learn, and have fun. Responsibilities 1. Work on a Team: Work together with the Site Director, Technology Lead, and all other Teachers and TAs toward the common goal of educating and inspiring youth and to have a fun and transformative summer experience! Collaborate with teachers and staff to further innovate, develop, and refine CPEP Summer Camp's educational lessons, activities, field trips, daily schedules, and special events. Participate in a pre- camp staff training as well as weekly staff meetings to support program activities and student learning and development. Work with other staff to ensure the coordination and implementation of the CPEP Summer Camp Program lessons, activities, and schedule. 2. Help Kids Learn and Grow: Take part in the creation of an energetic, positive, inspiring, creative, respectful, honest, inquisitive, challenging, and collaborative camp culture for students. Support the implementation of educational lesson plans and activities provided by the teacher to maximize student engagement and benefit. Lessons range from a project- based learning approach to a blended learning environment approach. Computers, the internet, and technology are at the core of many of the students' educational experiences. Partner with a teacher for the summer and work together to best serve the needs of your group's students and of the camp. Communicate effectively

with your partnered teacher to ensure there is an agreed understanding of the lessons, activities, academic concepts, student behavior management policies, and other tools and practices necessary for a successful student experience. Support the clear communication of camp policies to students regarding expectations for participation and conduct at camp. This communication includes conduct relating to other people as well as conduct relating to the use of busses, the facilities, and technology. Consistently implement an effective behavior management system as directed by the teacher and leadership staff. Work with the other staff to handle interventions needed to address children's medical, behavioral or family crisis issues that arise during camp. Work with the Site Director to ensure the published incident reporting protocol is implemented for timely and effective responses to incidents. Support the responsible supervision of students for the entire day. Manage CITs (older, returning students who are Coaches In Training ) with other staff to maximize the benefit CITs provide to the program and that they receive through their new leadership roles. 3. Program Support and Evaluation: Foster positive relations with all key stakeholders, including students' families, volunteers, program partners, venue facility partners, investors, and other visitors to the program. Effectively and efficiently use CPEP Summer Program reporting tools and practices. Work with the Site Director and Logistics Lead to document, organize, and report all necessary program information. Participate with other staff in a half- day camp debriefing at the end of camp. 4. Attendance Attendance for training and all 25 days of the program is mandatory.
