Business Administration Certificate Program Modeled after a traditional M.B.A. program, the Business Administration Certificate Program helps students develop or refine management and leadership skills to improve job performance and increase career opportunities. The program provides a solid foundation in the areas of basic business management, including finance, human resources, marketing, leadership and the law. Students will gain proficiency in strategic business analysis and the management skills and functions necessary for being a successful manager in today s challenging business environment. 3 Who Should Attend Newly appointed or prospective managers from sales, marketing, purchasing, finance and human resources in either public or private industry will develop the tools necessary to confidently face the demands and challenges of today s business environment. Special prep courses lay the groundwork for those who plan to pursue an M.B.A. Certificate Requirements A certificate is awarded upon completion of six required courses and two electives courses (3.5 units or more) each with a grade of C or better. This program of study entails 190 hours of instruction. All requirements must be completed within five years after the student enrolls in his/her first course. 4 Curriculum Required Courses Essentials of Management MGMT X490.1 (4 units) Are you a manager interested in increasing your effectiveness? A human resources professional? An individual looking to move into management? Now you can acquire an indepth understanding of the basic concepts and theories of management, while exploring the manager s operational role in all types of organizations. Gain insight into the manager s responsibility in planning, organizing, leading, staffing and controlling within the workplace. Learn how the best managers manage for success! Overview of Internet Marketing MGMT X (2 units) This course is targeted at marketers and business people seeking to gain an overview of the business value of Internet Marketing, and how it can be leveraged to achieve acquisition, conversion and retention of online customers. You will be introduced to the broad array of interactive marketing programs including search marketing, display advertising, marketing, site optimization, social media, mobile marketing, online analytics, and other online methods used to achieve business goals. This course will cover the advantages and challenges as well as identify key differences between Internet marketing and traditional marketing. As an introductory course, it presents you with a baseline understanding of the primary topics covered in more detailed examination in the other required and elective courses in this certificate program. Foundations of Human Resources Management MGMT X450.1 (4 units) Human resources management is vital to the financial health and productivity of all organizations. This important function provides the crucial link between management and employees in the public and private sector. In this course you will learn the fundamentals of human resources management. Begin by acquiring an in-depth understanding of the charter and mission of human resources in the industrial, service and public sectors. Then multiply your role and knowledge of the major elements of the personnel process including recruiting, interviewing, wage and labor issues, benefits, compensation, employment, regulations, documentation and termination, while gaining an insider s grasp of employee relations, work force diversity and human resources planning and research. Finally, you will address various theories regarding employee morale, organizational behavior and group dynamics. If you are interested in changing or advancing your career, this course will give you an overview of this growing field. Finance for Business and Administrators MGMT X (1.5 units) Impact your financial decisions and learn how to affect the performance of your unit's profitability and of your organization. In this course gain a better understanding of finance and accounting concepts to drive your organization s growth. Upon completion of this course, you will have improved general financial knowledge and an in-depth understanding of the impact of your decisions outside your functional area. Content of the course includes selected aspects of finance from a non-financial specialist perspective. Specific topics include: financial analysis; planning, forecasting, and budgeting; cash flow, and strategic financing. This class will be interactive and will require the active involvement of the participants in finance related activities. Communication in a Diverse and Changing Workplace MGMT X487 (2 units) In today s organizations where downsizing, mergers and reorganizations are common place, employees at all levels find themselves being asked to handle more tasks, more deadlines, more responsibilities, and more change. Added to that is the diversity of the workplace where employees working side by side cope with generational, gender, age and cultural differences. Communication, both verbal and nonverbal, is at the foundation of everything that we do and say in today s very diverse, changing and fast paced work environment. The good news is that communication is a learned skill. The focus of this course will be on heightening our awareness of the entire area of communication, and adding new skills to our existing repertoire of skills with the end result becoming a more competent communicator overall. 5 Business Ethics MGMT X498.3 (2 units) This course will focus on the critical ethical implications of managerial decision making. The emphasis will be on the link between personal values, community values, and ethical standards in any decision-making situation. Organizational leaders will understand the ethical quandaries in which they can find themselves and learn how to handle them. Students will also learn how to identify and avoid ethical decisionmaking traps. The students will also explore the critical links between beliefs, values, and ethics and learn how to make decisions when these decision-making elements don t align. Students will also have the opportunity to assess their own ethical perspective and learn how to collaborate and work with others who begin with a different perspective. Elective Courses Preparing for Entrepreneurship MGMT X (1.5 units) Success in business can be greatly enhanced with an understanding of key entrepreneurial characteristics and competencies solutions. This interactive course provides potential entrepreneurs with the knowledge of succeeding in an entrepreneurial opportunity. Topics include: how creativity, opportunity and feasibility are best evaluated; business strategies for new businesses; importance of a business plan; achieving success in a new business. Team projects create an experience in developing an entrepreneurial business. At the end of the course students will have the skills and confidence to evaluate starting a business. Introduction to Project Management Principles and Practices MGMT X (2.5 units) Project management has been proven to be the most effective method of delivering products within cost, schedule, and resource constraints. Gain a working knowledge of the basics of project management that can be instantly applied to any project. This course will provide the skills to ensure your projects deliver on time and on budget. Learn to define and manage scope via the elicitation of requirements and the creation of a detailed work breakdown structure, create a defensible and realistic project schedule and budget, develop and manage the project team, identify and manage risks, and understand the project procurement processes. Problem Solving and Decision Making MGMT X493.9 (2.5 units) This course provides a conceptual framework for approaching problem solving and decision-making situations with clarity and confidence. Participants build competence in making effective decisions based on the accurate assessment of the problem and preparing creative alternative solutions. Students learn how to use analysis, synthesis, and positive inquiry to approach individual and organizational problems, develop and evaluate objectives, and assess likely consequences. Using case studies and on-the-job situations encountered by the class, students explore successful models and proven methods that are readily transferable to their own situations. Business Writing ENGLISH X446.4 (4 units) Effective writing is a powerful tool in the business environment. Learn how to articulate your thoughts clearly, concisely and with a style that gets your writing read. Improve your skill at using this powerful instrument by learning to select and use appropriate formats, use the correct medium and adjust your writing style accordingly, as well as identify your objective and communicate it clearly. You ll also learn to spot, avoid and correct the most common writing pitfalls and gain valuable experience analyzing, writing and revising a complete spectrum of business documents. From a simple interoffice memo to a twenty-page business proposal, learn how to put good writing to work for you. Negotiation Skills SOCECOL X456 (2 units) Traditionally, the primary negotiation strategy utilized has been a competitive approach commonly referred to as distributive bargaining. Recently a more cooperative approach has emerged fostering the term win-win negotiation. This approach centers on interests rather than issues and attempts to create value for each side. In an interest based negotiation, attention moves toward solution. Explore the theory and practice of negotiating and the methods of obtaining cooperative conflict resolution. Business managers and professionals will benefit by examining positional bargaining, cooperative approaches to impasses and collaborative styles of negotiation techniques.
