Virtual Mbility Explitatin Scenari Intrductin The fllwing dcument describes the scenari fr the explitatin f the prject TeaCamp. Here the TEACHING AND LEARNING VIRTUAL MOBILITY SCENARIO is described, as well as the administrative, academic, curricular and technlgical requirements f the platfrm. Cntext Curse/Subject given in the accredited studies that the University ffers. The scenari f the teaching-learning invlves the cmpletin f this curse/subject in virtual mbility frm. There shuld be a curricular credit recgnitin fr the student and merit recgnitin fr the teacher. Bth, the teacher and the student shuld btain a cultural backgrund. There shuld be a feedback abut the quality f the teaching-learning prcess. The pssibilities fr academic and scial activities (research) shuld be rganized in the framewrk f the virtual mbility. Different frms f the cmbined virtual and physical mbility (blended learning) shuld be prpsed. VIRTUAL MOBILITY CONCEPT TeaCamp prject aims t explre a new cncept f Virtual Mbility (VM) n the premise that virtual mbility shuld be cnsidered as an alternative t physical mbility r as a cmplement r a preparatin fr it. Currently, Virtual Mbility has the ability t reach a large number f students and therefre must be analyzed in depth with a view t their integratin int ur educatinal systems. VM is als gd fr teachers, they can btain a cultural feedback and learning and research relatinship in a easy way. Mrever it can cmplement prgrams as Erasmus. Teacamp prject, in accrdance with the glssary f the elearningeurpa.inf prtal, defines Virtual Mbility as: The use f infrmatin and cmmunicatin technlgies (ICT) t btain the same benefits as ne wuld have with physical mbility but withut the need t travel 1. This prject understands that virtual mbility is als the pssibility f develping a study prgram at natinal r internatinal level related t the training area f the student, thrugh the methdlgy f distance educatin, because f this it is imprtant t knwn that Virtual Mbility des nt nly represents the use f tls and appraches allwing the transfer f knwledge because then we wuld talk abut e-learning r Distance Learning. 1 http://www.elearningeurpa.inf LLL Erasmus prgram Multilateral Virtual Campuses prject TeaCamp - Teacher Virtual Campus: Research, Practice, Apply. Page 4

In a virtual mbility curse, in additin t btain the credits granted by the hst universities and acquire specific skills f the subject r subjects selected, the student btains ther imprtant academic skills like: increase his knwledge abut ther cultures, language, different educatinal systems and acquisitin f technlgical skills, etc. The achievement f these gals demnstrates the educatinal value f virtual mbility. In this kind f mbility we must nt frget the teachers that, in additin t rganizing the crdinatin f the mbility r sharing their subject with thers cuntry teachers, they will als btain cultural knwledge frm ther clleagues and students. Definitin f virtual mbility has been explred during ther EU prjects (Mvinter, MveIT 2 prject, and thers). Accrding t Mvinter 3 these are sme imprtant elements within Virtual Mbility: - Interactivity and cmmunicatin between students and teachers frm different cuntries: It is fundamental that students are encuraged t and actually wrk with fellw students and/r teachers frm ther natinalities. This cperatin intends that participants nt nly learn the specific cntent f the curse but als ther cultural issues t prmte intercultural interactin. It is imprtant t prvide students and teachers with all the necessary tls t fster this cmmunicatin. Tls like e-mail, chat, videcnferencing, etc. - Internatinal Teaching Grup: Participating lecturers and tutrs shuld belng t institutins frm different cuntries in rder t guarantee that different natinal and cultural perspectives are available t the learners. - Multicultural exchange: Ensure the learning diversity f cultural perspectives creating activities and resurces fr this purpse. - Apprpriate technlgical slutins: T ensure the virtual mbility, ICT must be available t ur students and teachers. Tls f distance learning like learning platfrms, frums, chat, wiki, videcnferencing, etc and furthermre ther tls in web 2.0 t prmte scial interactin such as scial netwrking, scial bkmarking, etc. - Jint chice f the subject t be studied thrugh VM: It wuld be interesting t prpse activities and subjects related t the culture f different cuntries. Include curses r activities abut Histry, implementatin f internatinal law in different cuntries, cmparative literature, plicy and scial issues, envirnment, educatin, public health, etc. (and in general all address issues related t the well-being f the ppulatin) This issues cntribute t imprve the learning abut intercultural infrmatin. - Jint curricula design: It is needed in rder t crdinate the educatinal ffer f the universities which participate in the mbility. The crrect identificatin f cmplementarities between HEIs and partners prmtes a sense f a shared gal with shared respnsibilities and utcmes. Thanks t this active, we btain participatin f all partners; HEIs develp a real cperatin experience. 2 http://mve-it.eurpace.rg/ 3 http://www.vertebralcue.rg/images/stries/mvinter_white_paper.pdf LLL Erasmus prgram Multilateral Virtual Campuses prject TeaCamp - Teacher Virtual Campus: Research, Practice, Apply. Page 5

- Jint titles: it is necessary an agreement amng the participating institutins t deliver a jint certificate recgnized credits at the end f the prgram. This is a pwerful mtivatin factr which allws participants t credit the virtual mbility experience as a fully recgnized part f an academic r training experience and achievement. - Teachers participatin: it s als necessary t recgnize the teachers participatin, bth as crdinatr and as virtual visitrs sharing a subject with ther cuntry teachers ffering their subject fr the experience. This recgnitin must be made bth ways, in the teachers curricula and in the additinal effrt the teacher must t d t participate. After analyzing all these elements and characteristics f virtual mbility, it can be defined as: Virtual mbility ffers the students the pssibility f taking a curse in anther cuntry thrugh the use f ICTs, apart frm btaining the credits granted by the hst universities and acquire specific skills f the subject selected, the students will btain imprtant academic skills such as: knwing ther cultures, language, different educatin systems and acquisitin f technlgical skills, etc. withut travelling t the hst University. Having analysed previus experience f Eurpean prjects and institutins, as well as academic publicatins, prject partnership als agreed that virtual mbility can be categrised accrding t its academic purpse: - Virtual mbility fr studies - Virtual mbility fr placements - Virtual mbility fr shrter academic activities. TeaCamp explitatin wrkshp with difference Eurpean higher educatin institutins resulted in a definitin f virtual mbility fr studies describing it as ffering students, as a part f their curriculum, access t curses and study schemes frm anther university in a freign cuntry in rder t learn, cmmunicate and participate in cllabrative wrk in an internatinal envirnment with teachers and fellw students abrad via the new infrmatin technlgies. This cncept shuld als include teachers wh crdinate the virtual mbility experience. They will als increase their cultural learning frm the interactin with teachers and students frm different cuntries. Practical examples f hw virtual mbility culd be implemented, are studied in different prjects, e.g. VM-BASE 4 and EU-VIP 5. Actrs invlved Teachers The rle f the teachers has a duble purpse. On ne hand, they act as crdinatrs fr the mbility prgramme and, n the ther hand, they are in charge f the subject as they ffer it and they have t maintain it as well. 4 http://vm-base.eurpace.rg/ 5 http://www.euvip.eu/ LLL Erasmus prgram Multilateral Virtual Campuses prject TeaCamp - Teacher Virtual Campus: Research, Practice, Apply. Page 6

There are three types f teacher rles pssible: 1. Virtual Mbility Crdinatr. 2. Virtual Mbility Teacher. 3. Visiting Teacher. All these rles can be undertaken by 2 r 3 different persns. The teacher in mbility is always a separate persn, while the crdinating teacher and visiting teacher can be the same persn r tw different peple. Virtual Mbility Crdinatr The Virtual Mbility Crdinatr is a teacher in the hme university that is the respnsible f managing and tutring the mbility. He/she is in charge f all thse activities that need an inpersn wrk and they cannt be develped by the teacher that ffers the subject in the hst university. He/she crdinates the signing f the agreement that ensures the recgnitin f credits (similar t Erasmus agreements f physical mbility). He/she uses English r in the language f the cuntry whse university ffers the curse/study subject. Objectives and tasks fr the Virtual Mbility Crdinatr: Obtaining the academic accreditatin as participant in a virtual mbility experience f students in their university. Presentatin f the virtual mbility activities as a part f academic activities in the internal and external quality assurance. SWID analysis and/r ther frms f investigatin f the rle and perspectives f virtual mbility in the study prcess. Taking part in inter-university prjects with teachers and students. Cllabrating with peple frm different linguistic and cultural areas. Virtual Mbility Teacher This is the teacher that, in the hst university, ffers his/her subject fr the mbility f students frm ther universities. This teacher shuld make the subject available fr virtual learning in the TeaCamp teaching platfrm. Als, he/she cmmits t carry ut the tutring, n-line classes, paying attentin t the netwrks, etc. In brief, he/she develps all the activities required fr this virtual teaching mdel. He/she uses English r the language f the hme university. Objectives and tasks fr the Virtual Mbility Teacher: Academic recgnitin as participant in the student virtual mbility experience in his/her university. Academic activity recgnitin. The time the teacher uses in dealing with his/her subject f virtual mbility is duly acknwledged. Imprving pedaggical innvatin. Taking part in inter-university prjects with students. Cllabrating with peple frm different linguistic and cultural areas. Giving infrmatin and the necessary supprt t include the activities in the virtual space in all system f academic, scial and research activities. Visiting Teacher A visitr is a teacher that wants t participate as a teacher in a subject ffered by anther university. This teacher must have a previus agreement with the virtual mbility lecturers frm the hst university and the permissins required frm his/her wn university in rder t recgnize him/her the mbility. He/she agrees t jin the team f the hst university and t cllabrate with them in English r in the native language f this university. He/she shuld develp his/her teaching activities in this language as well. Objectives and tasks fr the Visiting Teacher: Academic recgnitin fr the virtual mbility frm the hme university. Academic activity recgnitin. The time the teacher uses in dealing with their subject f virtual mbility is duly acknwledged. Imprving pedaggical innvatin. Taking part in inter-university prjects with teachers and students. Cllabrating with peple frm different linguistic and cultural areas. Participating in the internal and external quality assurance and receiving the necessary recgnitin, based n transparency and publicity. Students The students interested in the exchange will be respnsible f lking fr the subjects that can be validated in their studies thrugh virtual mbility. These subjects shuld be in the virtual ffer f the hst university. Requirements: Necessary backgrund fr the curse. Tecnlgical cmpetences. Knwledge f the language f the curse. Access t the Internet. Scial and cultural cmpetences t participate in prblem slving cncerning the rganizatin f studies. Student tasks and bjectives: Credit recgnitin. Acquisitin f the cultural and linguistic cmpetences, as well as technlgical ne, withut having t travel. Acquisitin f self-rganizatin cmpetences and planning the curse. Widen the ptins t enrl in curses frm many different Eurpean universities withut having t travel. Taking part in curses rganized by ther universities where the teaching-learning prcess may be different. Cllabrating with peple frm different linguistic and cultural areas. Search and infrmatin management, dcumentatin... It will act as a backgrund fr real mbility. Participatin in the demcratic decisin making prcesses, including decisins abut the recgnitin and subject validatin, using internal and external quality assurance prcesses als in the hst university. Administrative tasks All the academic prcess invlves administrative tasks that must be carried ut in additin and cnsidered by ther administrative staff: Central Crdinatin A central administrative grup is needed in rder t crdinate the educatinal ffer f the universities which participate in the mbility. These are the main tasks t be crdinated: Preparatin f the academic ffer and sending t all participating universities. The TeaCamp academic ffer shuld list the teachers, subjects, university and cuntry which is making the ffer. Decide the prices f the curses (if necessary). Prmting TeaCamp in ther universities. Infrmatin abut the enrlment prcess fr the students. Including the virtual mbility in the external quality assurance and making it transparent credible. Prmting the recgnitin f curses and study perids in virtual space, based n the quality assurance, transparency and mutual trust. Etc. Lcal Crdinatin It is necessary that each participating university has its wn administratin in rder t manage Erasmus Virtual Mbility Agreements, the students and the teachers invlved in these mbilities. Respnsibilities: Management/administratin staff fr the virtual mbility prcess in each Eurpean university with students enrlled in the subject: Publicatin f the subjects ffered (all the subjects that the student can access frm his/her wn university thrugh the agreements signed). Staff fr the enrlment prcess Specific staff fr the management f the administrative prcess in each university. Receptin f the students final marks and its incrpratin t the student s academic transcript at his/her university. Gathering feedback frm the participants f the virtual mbility prcess. Peridic review f the prcess and prpsals fr the imprvement, including imprvement f the regulatins. Etc. Management/administratin staff fr the virtual mbility prcess in the university that ffers the subject: Incrpratin f the freign student t the virtual mbility prcess in the university that ffers the subject and access t data cmmunicatin. Assessment f the virtual mbility prcess fr the teacher. Teacher s virtual mbility certificatin. Evaluatin f the system fr the mbility. Participatin in the quality assurance prcesses. Etc. University benefits and respnsibilities Universities, thugh their Vice-rectr s ffices r their internatinalizatin ffices and their Vicerectr s ffice fr Studies and Teaching Staff will crdinate and apprve the academic ffer and will establish which is the minimum number f students in each subject t maintain it. Objectives and tasks: LLL Erasmus prgram Multilateral Virtual Campuses prject TeaCamp - Teacher Virtual Campus: Research, Practice, Apply. Page 10

Increasing the number f ptential internatinal students. Innvatin in teaching-learning prcesses. Bsting the linguistic and cultural exchange in the university cmmunity. Internatinal netwrking with EU and wrldwide institutins (cntract frms fr VM are suggested by EPICS 6 prject fr HEIs). Transparency and mutual trust t innvatins. Inclusin f virtual space in demcratic prcesses in the universities. Respnsibilities Each university will face the csts frm: Teachers that make the academic ffer Lcal administratin fr mbility management. Quality assurance and guaranties fr the participants. Each university will recgnize, via Erasmus agreements: The credits that the student has cmpleted in the TeaCamp and will validate them by the suitable crrespndent and referenced subjects in the Erasmus agreement. Academic credits and merits frm teachers invlved: Virtual mbility crdinatrs Teachers wh prpse the subjects Mbility teachers (Fllwing the previus reprt frm the hst university) Technical supprt These are peple that maintain the technlgical tls that allw mbility. There are centralized platfrm technicians and prfessinals in the participating universities. They maintain the virtual campus tl and the entire infrastructure t supprt the virtual mbility, as the vide platfrms, scial nets, etc. They guaranty the transparency and pssibility t receive infrmatin and t participate in the demcratic decisin making prcesses. TeaCamp Virtual mbility administratin The bjective f mbility in the TeaCamp is basically the same as in the Erasmus exchanges. The nly difference is that in the TeaCamp, where there is virtual mbility, it is pssible t carry ut a 6 www.epics-ve.eu LLL Erasmus prgram Multilateral Virtual Campuses prject TeaCamp - Teacher Virtual Campus: Research, Practice, Apply. number f subjects which neither f them will invlve a full curse nr a semester, giving this mbility mdel mre flexibility. The virtual mbility culd be cmbined with the physical mbility increasing the flexibility. Different mdels fr the cmbined use f face t face and e-learning with the apprpriate feedback and supprt will be prpsed. The basic prcess fr the academic ffering in the TeaCamp has t fllw these steps: Apprval f the academic ffer f the curse. Establishment f agreements. Signing f the agreement. Permissins, access t the tls and academic management. Develping f the virtual mbility prcess. Final evaluatin f the subjects. Evaluatin f the cultural and scial aspects. Cntinuus quality imprvement, based n the internal and external evaluatins. Academic credit recgnitin. Virtual Mbility recgnitin. Apprval f the academic ffer f the curse Participating universities in the TeaCamp prject shuld mve the subjects ffered fr virtual teaching during the curse t the Central Administratin. This ffer culd be in English r in the language f the hst university. Once the ffer is dne, it will be apprved by a Cmmittee cmpsed by representatives f all the universities participating in the TeaCamp. The apprval shuld be based n the internal and external quality assurance. After the apprval, students can chse the subjects fr the curse. The virtual mbility crdinatrs will advise the students t avid them t chse disseminated subjects that wuld make the acquisitin f scial skills mre difficult. Establishment f Agreements Agreements between schls and universities will be established in t decide the number f students ffered in the exchange. These agreements will be usually befre r after the academic ffer apprval. The agreements must establish the number f students that can participate frm each university. Once the agreements are established, there is a prpsal addressed t students s that they can apply fr virtual mbility schlarship f their university. The agreements shuld include peridic reviews f the results and shuld be peridically renewed n the bases f the evaluatin f quality f the results and the prcess. LLL Erasmus prgram Multilateral Virtual Campuses prject TeaCamp - Teacher Virtual Campus: Research, Practice, Apply. Page 12

Scenaris fr virtual mbility shuld be als discussed within the institutin and agreed with the thers Erasmus institutins. Signing f the Agreement When the prcess is apprved in each university, the students must sign the Erasmus agreement fr the virtual mbility. This agreement shuld cntain the student s cmmitment t carry ut sme training and t spend the required time fr btaining certain cultural and scial skills frm the hst university. Bth, the acquisitin f cultural and scial cmpetences will be evaluated at the end f the prcess. Permits, accesses t tls and academic management Technical teams will prvide students and teachers with the access t the virtual campus. On the ther hand, there is als access t ther virtual mbility tls f the TeaCamp. These will be the nes that will prvide students with the sci-cultural skills. Administrative staff f the hst university will register the students in the academic management f applicatins. Develpment f the prcess f virtual mbility Thrugh the virtual learning platfrm, the student acquires the academic knwledge f the subjects in a virtual mbility mdel. These classes will be in English r in the language f the hst university. Cultural and scial aspects will be wrked ut with pen cmmunicatin tls and exercises where the student shuld research abut the lifestyle and habits f the hst university. These sci-cultural skills are als btained in the frums and internships where the students f the mbility are integrated with the students f the hst university. Students shuld have the pssibility t participate in the decisin making prcess abut the academic activities. Students must have access t the infrmatin abut the study and research prcesses in the hst university. Besides using virtual mbility tls prpsed and in rder t achieve a cultural knwledge f the cuntries where they are develping the mbility, the students can use scial netwrking under cntrl f the tutrs. Final assessment f the subjects At the end f the curse r the subject, teachers will assess the acquired knwledge using the e- learning virtual platfrm. This evaluatin will be upladed t the academic management applicatins f the hst university and the minutes will be sent t the hme university thrugh the autmatic validatin f subjects. Assessment f the cultural and scial aspects The student will have t talk with the virtual mbility crdinatr f the hst university in rder t evaluate the acquisitin f sci-cultural knwledge and skills by the student. During this interview there will be an evaluatin abut if the student has develped a cmplete virtual LLL Erasmus prgram Multilateral Virtual Campuses prject TeaCamp - Teacher Virtual Campus: Research, Practice, Apply. Page 13

mbility r just an e-learning experience. The students shuld have the pssibility t evaluate the study prcess and t submit prpsals abut imprvements. Academic credit recgnitin Student Once the reprts f the marks have been received, the recgnitin f the academic credits will be taken and will be mved t the student s academic transcript. Mbility teacher In this case, the credits will be recgnized befre the develpment f the classes and they will be taken int accunt fr the assignment f the academic year. The activities in the virtual mbility shuld be supprted by the quality assurance system. Mbility recgnitin If the virtual mbility crdinatr assessment f the hst university is psitive and the student s academic results are als psitive, the hme university will recgnize the mbility and the student will be cmpensated accrding t the established criteria. S a percentage f mbility can be recgnized, r an equivalence can be made depending n the criteria established by the hme university and the reprt frm the virtual mbility crdinatr f the hst university. The evaluatin f the mbility shuld be included in the internal and external quality assurance systems. Preparatin fr Academic Activities (Using Teacamp Infrastructure) Academic activity will be develped thrugh a centralized virtual learning platfrm (Mdle) and an n-line class tl (videcnferencing).the teacher f the university that ffers the subject shuld design the subject fr this mdel. All the csts cming frm this wrk and the subsequent teaching activities f the teacher will be paid by the university which ffers it. Labratry practicals shuld be designed in the way that students can d them in their hme university. Furthermre, tutrials will be scheduled s that students culd have a virtual space (videcnferencing preferred) where they can attend them. Teachers frm different cuntries will be crdinated thrugh Elgg platfrm. Pssibilities fr feedback and fr the imprvements f prpsals will be supplied thrugh Elgg platfrm (www.teacamp.eu/vc ). VIRQUAL 7 prject aims at helping educatinal and training institutins t achieve Virtual Mbility and t guarantee EQF implementatin thrugh e-learning, develping infrastructure fr curriculum designing n the basis f EQF tls. 7 http://virqual.up.pt/ LLL Erasmus prgram Multilateral Virtual Campuses prject TeaCamp - Teacher Virtual Campus: Research, Practice, Apply. Hk up prject 8 - "Hk up! CE Language Learning Gateway" was funded with supprt frm the Lifelng Learning Prgramme f the Eurpean Cmmissin during 2008 t 2010 and cntinues t be implemented by universities participating in Campus Eurpae. One f the services it ffers students is access t language learning: befre, during and after the academic year abrad. Twelve languages are available, many f which are nt taught at the hme university. Thrugh Hk up! students (and teachers) have access t language tuitin in all languages f the CE netwrk at different levels f cmpetence t enable them t study at ne f the member universities f the Eurpean University Fundatin and mre fundamentally students have access t less widely spken languages. Scial and Cultural Activities Students wh participate in virtual mbility will have a minimum f semi-structured activities by the tutrs (mbility crdinatrs) they will receive sme cultural feedback frm the hst university and the cuntry which the university is lcated in. Students will be supplied with the infrmatin abut the traditins f the electins f academic persnal and administratin, apprval f the study arrangements and ther different pssibilities t participate in the demcratic prcesses in the hst university. Mrever, sme kind f cultural tutring sessin where the student participates with ther students in grup internships and netwrks will be carried ut. The Internet search f items related t the cuntry f destinatin will help the student t understand the cuntry where he/she is develping the mbility better. This infrmatin shuld be supervised and addressed by the crdinatr at the beginning and implemented by the student later. Technical Supprt Technical supprt will be centralized.
