Mdule Cntent LG517 The Plitics f Develpment The relatinship between the rich Nrth and the develping Suth is a majr issue in tday s wrld. This issue has implicatins beynd ecnmic develpment and human security, spilling ver int questins f military security and envirnmental sustainability. The aim f this mdule is t examine the ways in which the internatinal cmmunity has cllectively debated this issue and t intrduce students t the principal theretical perspectives within develpment studies. It will analyse the key phases in thinking n internatinal develpment frm the 1950s t the present day. This will prvide a framewrk in which t examine cntemprary appraches t the subject including sustainable develpment, human develpment and pst-develpment thery. Recgnising that thery and practice stand in a dialectical relatinship t ne anther (namely that thery grws and changes thrugh reflectin n practice and that practice is always guided by theretical presuppsitins whether it is aware f these r nt), the curse relates theretical develpments and changes in the academic study f develpment t the main events and mvements that have shaped wrld develpment ver the past half century. It cvers a survey f the main cmpeting theretical appraches t develpment including mdernisatin thery, dependency thery Gender and develpment Sustainable develpment, Human develpment Pst-develpment.
